On the following pages, we present a selection of feature films — some of which are likely to screen in competition or other prestigious sections at international film festivals. 2014 was a particularly good year for Polish cinema. Domestic films brought almost 11 million theatrical admissions. Łukasz Palkowski’s Bogowie (Gods), Jan Komasa’s Miasto 44 (Warsaw 44) and Władysław Pasikowski’s Jack Strong were universally regarded as films that were important, high in artistic quality, and exceptionally well made. I am glad that after ten years of Polish Film Institute activity, the visibility Agnieszka Odorowicz of Polish cinema on the international stage has increased greatly. Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida was a film General Director of the Polish Film Institute that moved us and made us proud by winning acclaim around the world, with the crowning glory of a total of five European Film Awards. Contemporary Polish cinema is diverse and increasingly bold. Filmmakers today understand the needs of the audience; they are also more keen to turn to genre-based films. 2015 will bring a number of films by first- and second-time directors, who will surely further enrich the image of Polish cinema. It is my hope that the New Polish Films catalogue will allow you to discover something intriguing, surprising, and inspiring about Polish cinema today. 4 NEW POLISH FILMS 2015 FEATURES f INDEX f CONTENTS NEW POLISH FILMS 2015FEATURES 5 Jerzy Skolimowski 11 Minutes (working title) f INDEX f CONTENTS 11 minut (working title) POLAND – IRELAND 2015 80 MIN COLOUR written and directed by Jerzy Skolimowski director of photography Mikołaj Łebkowski edited byAgnieszka Glińska production design by Joanna Director, screenwriter, actor, poet, painter. In line with this tradition, in this special English language issue, we present a selection of articles published in “Kino” in the last year. They include reviews, interviews, as well as articles concerning the history of Polish cinema and opinion columns. However, we focus on the most interesting Polish feature films (of which 41 have been made there between the beginning of 2007 and May 2008), as well as documentary and animated films of the last year. Some of them could be seen at various international festivals, where they received numerous awards. The most prestigious award, an Oscar, came to the short animated film, “Peter and the Wolf”, which is a British-Polish co-production, directed by Suzie Templeton and made in the Studio Se-Ma-For in Łódź. On the other hand, the most awarded Polish film was “Tricks” by Andrzej Jakimowski, which till April 2008 received 12 awards, including at the festivals in Gdynia, Venice, Tokyo, Mannheim, Sao Paulo and Miami. However, what counts more than awards is the fact that Polish viewers have regained pleasure in watching Polish films.

  • Polish Cinema for Beginners
Polish Cinema for Beginners "Polish Cinema for Beginners" is a unique project - the first of its kind - both in Wroclaw and all of Poland, whose first edition took place in 2012 and was very popular with audiences. It is aimed directly at foreigners in order to present them with the masterpieces of Polish cinema. This will be shown, with English subtitles, on the big screen in Kino Nowe Horyzonty (New Horizons Cinema). In order to present the historical and artistic context of the films, each screening is introduced by a lecture in English, led by renowned experts - film scholars , journalists and scientists. Thanks to this, the project has not only entertainment, but also educational value, thus serving as a valuable course in Polish culture. Each screening is followed by an open discussion in which different cultural viewpoints are shared. After the discussion, viewers are cordially invited to a Polish Party in Wroclaw’s Gradient Club (at Solny Square). Our goal Through regular meetings and screenings of Polish films, we want to support the integration process of foreigners living in Wroclaw. We also want to show the history of Polish cinema and, more broadly, Polish culture, by placing the films in a wider socio- historical context. English-speaking Polish viewers will have the opportunity to see their native Polish films from a slightly different perspective, which - as shown by the reactions of foreigners during post-screening discussions – is sometimes surprising. What is more, we want to co-create the identity of Wroclaw as a city that stands out on the Polish map by offering equal- opportunity access to the cultural heritage of our country, by being an open city, and – especially in the context of its being chosen as European Capital of Culture 2016 – by offering an interesting and unique range of cultural and educational activities.

Today, after nearly 20 years, the wars are over, in most areas peace has set in, and stability has been achieved. And yet, in our interview with Blerim Reka, he echoes Clinton’s words saying: “It is the duty of our generation to tell our grandchildren the successful story of the Balkans, different from the bloody Balkans one which we were told about.” This and many more observations made by the authors of this issue of New Eastern Europe piece together a complex picture of a region marred by a painful past and facing a hopeful, yet fragile future.

The perversity of the story comes from the fact that the one persecuted is a young man, an Italian, who is a genuine Christian. On the other side stands a row of liberated women who outperform the men in their cynicism and brutality of conduct. The result of the clash is inconclusive – idealism falters, although it has its Lord, while cynicism cracks, even though it’s far from being converted. The genealogy of the liberated woman catches a glimpse back to the past.

WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; “The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Media Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; “WMC Media Watch: The Gender Gap in Coverage of Reproductive Issues”; “Writing Rape: How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault”; “WMC Investigation: 10-Year Review of Gender & Emmy Nominations”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual WMC Status of Women in the U.S.

THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC STUDIES The Faculty of International Business and Economics The Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication of ASE Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj- Napoca 7th International Conference: Synergies in Communication Bucharest, Romania, 22 - 23 November 2018 BEHIND THE SCREENS: A STUDY OF THE FILMS OF THREE INDIAN WOMEN DIRECTORS Minouti NAIK1 Abstract Indian films, even after 76 years of independence and 105 years of Indian Cinema, are a predominantly male domain. The percentage of women film makers, in the industry, is a mere 9.1%. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience. This will be analysed against the backdrop of the realities of the society from which these films emerge, and as a reflection of the gender dynamics existing in Indian society. Keywords: Indian cinema, women, themes, characters, uniqueness 1. Introduction Men have sight, women insight. - Victor Hugo Victor Hugo‟s observation, penned down in his memoirs, might be an apt point to begin with, when one reflects upon films made by Indian women filmmakers. Despite films forming a very important facet of the Indian society and the fact that India completed 105 years of cinema, this year, the number of women making films in India is very small.
