ESO WORLD TOUR Grades 1 through 8 Tuesday, April 2, 2019 (Middle School Day) Wednesday, April 3, 2019 Thursday, April 4, 2019 Friday, April 5, 2019 1 ESO WORLD TOUR Spring Festival Overture Li Huanzhi Shepherd’s Hey Percy Grainger Polonaise brillante No. 2 Henryk Wieniawski Claire Arias-Kim, violin African Drumming Demo Michael Folker Beneath Alex Shapiro Suite from “Frozen” Arr. Krogstad Mambo from West Side Story Leonard Bernstein 2 Many thanks to the Elgin Symphony’s education committee for the idea to take this concert on a world tour! It was a unanimous choice: let’s sample orchestral music from the world’s seven continents. Choosing the repertoire for the concert was not as easy as we thought it might be during the conception of this program. How can we narrow down the large quantity of orchestral music from Europe, where the symphony orchestra originated? Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven would all be obvious choices. In a surprising twist we chose a composer from Poland, the home of the brilliant violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski. We are thrilled to have young violinist Claire Arias-Kim as our soloist for Wieniawski’s Polonaise brilliante No. 2. What repertoire can we choose from the continents with musical traditions that don’t necessarily include traditional western orchestral instruments? What do we do about Antarctica? (We always try to program something that’s just pure fun.) For Africa, we felt it was important to demonstrate the drumming traditions and to highlight the expertise of one of our members, percussionist Michael Folker. It became a concert of interesting connections. -

O’Shea, Chair My dissertation investigates the politics of festival curation and production in artist-led theater festivals across the Portuguese-speaking (or Lusophone) world, which includes Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. I focus on uses of Lusophony as a tactics to generate alternatives to globalization, and as a response to experiences of racialization and marginalization stemming from a colonial past. I also expose the contradictory relation between Lusophony, colonialism, and globalization, which constitute obstacles for transnational tactics. I select three festivals where, I propose, the legacies of the colonial past, which include the contradictions of Lusophony, become apparent throughout the curatorial and production processes: Estação da Cena Lusófona (Portugal), Mindelact – Festival Internacional de Teatro do Mindelo (Cabo Verde), and Circuito de Teatro em Português (Brazil). -

African historiography has ceased to be the crowing of imperialist historians or the subtle backing of a racist philosophy. Each year new research is turned out demonstrating time and again that Africans had a pre-colonial history, and that even during colonial times they played an important part in their own history. However, since African history has emerged as a field attracting the serious atten tion of historians, it must face the problems that confront all historiography; all the more since it has more than the ordinary impact on the people it purports to study. Because it is so closely involved in the political and social move ments of the present-day world, it demands of all engaged in writing African history - from the researcher down to the popular writer - that they show awareness of the problems of Africa and the Third World. African historiography, not surprisingly, bears the im print of its history, and its involvement in the polemics of Black Liberation and racism. -
Relatório Do Estado Geral Do Ambiente Em Angola

The Botanical Exploration of Angola by Germans During the 19Th and 20Th Centuries, with Biographical Sketches and Notes on Collections and Herbaria
Blumea 65, 2020: 126–161 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/blumea RESEARCH ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.3767/blumea.2020.65.02.06 The botanical exploration of Angola by Germans during the 19th and 20th centuries, with biographical sketches and notes on collections and herbaria E. Figueiredo1, *, G.F. Smith1, S. Dressler 2 Key words Abstract A catalogue of 29 German individuals who were active in the botanical exploration of Angola during the 19th and 20th centuries is presented. One of these is likely of Swiss nationality but with significant links to German Angola settlers in Angola. The catalogue includes information on the places of collecting activity, dates on which locations botanical exploration were visited, the whereabouts of preserved exsiccata, maps with itineraries, and biographical information on the German explorers collectors. Initial botanical exploration in Angola by Germans was linked to efforts to establish and expand Germany’s plant collections colonies in Africa. Later exploration followed after some Germans had settled in the country. However, Angola was never under German control. The most intense period of German collecting activity in this south-tropical African country took place from the early-1870s to 1900. Twenty-four Germans collected plant specimens in Angola for deposition in herbaria in continental Europe, mostly in Germany. Five other naturalists or explorers were active in Angola but collections have not been located under their names or were made by someone else. A further three col- lectors, who are sometimes cited as having collected material in Angola but did not do so, are also briefly discussed. Citation: Figueiredo E, Smith GF, Dressler S. -

But oil extraction—both on and offshore—is a toxic remedy for the country’s economic ills, with devastating effects on both the environment and traditional livelihoods. Focusing on the everyday realities of people living in the extraction zones, Kristin Reed explores the exclusion, degradation, and violence that are the bitter fruits of petro-capitalism in Angola. She emphasizes the failure of corporate initiatives to offset the destructive effects of their activities. Author: Kristin Reed holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a program consultant to humanitarian and environmental nonprofit organizations. Review: “An absolutely necessary work of political ecology. Centering on the polluted, impoverished coastal communities of northwest Angola, Crude Existence convincingly shows how the ‘curse of oil’ in extractive regions is a curse of political -
