Krogstad Mambo from West Side Story Leonard Bernstein 2 Many thanks to the Elgin Symphony’s education committee for the idea to take this concert on a world tour! It was a unanimous choice: let’s sample orchestral music from the world’s seven continents. Choosing the repertoire for the concert was not as easy as we thought it might be during the conception of this program. How can we narrow down the large quantity of orchestral music from Europe, where the symphony orchestra originated? Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven would all be obvious choices. In a surprising twist we chose a composer from Poland, the home of the brilliant violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski. We are thrilled to have young violinist Claire Arias-Kim as our soloist for Wieniawski’s Polonaise brilliante No. 2. What repertoire can we choose from the continents with musical traditions that don’t necessarily include traditional western orchestral instruments? What do we do about Antarctica? (We always try to program something that’s just pure fun.) For Africa, we felt it was important to demonstrate the drumming traditions and to highlight the expertise of one of our members, percussionist Michael Folker. It became a concert of interesting connections. -

Loss of oral function may be due to tooth loss, which can affect the quality of life of an individual. The aim of our study was to evaluate the quality of life in toothless adults in Ndé division. A total of 1054 edentulous subjects (partial, mixed, total) completed the OHIP-14 questionnaire, used for assessing the quality of life in edentulous patients. Males (63%), were more dominant and the ages of the patients ranged between 18 to 120 years old. Caries (71.6%), were the leading cause of tooth loss followed by poor oral hygiene (63.15%) and the consequence being the loss of aesthetics at 56.6%. -

Qualia NICHOLAS HARKNESS Harvard University, USA Qualia (singular, quale) are cultural emergents that manifest phenomenally as sensuous features or qualities. The anthropological challenge presented by qualia is to theorize elements of experience that are semiotically generated but apperceived as non-signs. Qualia are not reducible to a psychology of individual perceptions of sensory data, to a cultural ontology of “materiality,” or to philosophical intuitions about the subjective properties of consciousness. The analytical solution to the challenge of qualia is to con- sider tone in relation to the familiar linguistic anthropological categories of token and type. This solution has been made methodologically practical by conceptualizing qualia, in Peircean terms, as “facts of firstness” or firstness “under its form of secondness.” Inthephilosophyofmind,theterm“qualia”hasbeenusedtodescribetheineffable, intrinsic, private, and directly or immediately apprehensible experiences of “the way things seem,” which have been taken to constitute the atomic subjective properties of consciousness. This concept was challenged in an influential paper by Daniel Dennett, who argued that qualia “is a philosophers’ term which fosters nothing but confusion, and refers in the end to no properties or features at all” (Dennett 1988, 387). Dennett concluded, correctly, that these diverse elements of feeling, made sensuously present atvariouslevelsofattention,wereactuallyidiosyncraticresponsestoapperceptions of “public, relational” qualities. It is part of the Semi-Bantu (or Grassfields Bantu) ethnic group. The Bamileke are regrouped under several groups, each under the guidance of a chief or fon. Nonetheless, all of these groups have the same ancestors and thus share the same history, culture, and languages. -

Soen – Imperial Credit: Mark Laita (Foto)/Enrique Zabala (Design) (42:05, Digital, CD, Vinyl, Silver Lining Music, 2021) Ich muss bekennen: seitdem ich Soen vor vier Jahren zum ersten Mal gehört habe, bin ich dem unverkennbaren Sound der Schweden verfallen. Daran konnte weder die relativ schlechte Produktion des 2017er Albums „Lykaia“ etwas ändern, noch die klangliche Nähe zu Tool und Opeth, welche die Skandinavier auf den Vorgängeralben „Tellurian“ (2014) und insbesondere dem Debüt „Cognitive“ (2012) gepfelgt hatten. „Schuld“ an diesem trotzdem waren neben dem herausragenden harmonischen Gesang von Frontmann Joel Ekelöf und dem vielseitigen Schlagzeugspiel von Bandkopf und Ex-Opeth-Mitglied Martin Lopez vor allem Soens Gespür für herzerweichende Ohrwurmmelodien, die mir bis heute unzählige Male die Tränen in die Augen getrieben haben. Vor allem ‚God’s Acre‘ ist ein Song für die Ewigkeit geworden und gehört für mich in den Koffer für die einsame Insel. Auch als 2019 das vierte Album Soens erschien, war ich schon beim Hören der ersten Single hin und weg so dass sich „Lotus“ bis heute unzählige Male auf meinem Plattenteller gedreht hat. Das bereits im Januar erschienene neue Album „Imperial“ vereint nun ein weiteres Mal jene altbekannten Trademarks der Schweden, welche ich so liebe. Trotzdem ist irgendetwas anders als sonst, denn anstelle von Euphorie und grenzenloser Begeisterung macht sich erstmalig so etwas wie leichte Gleichgültigkeit breit. Soen zeigen erste Abnutzungserscheinungen. Die Riffs von Gitarrist Lars Enok Åhlund sind zwar fetter als jemals zuvor und dringen in ungewohnte Härten vor, was für sich genommen, ein klanglicher Zugewinn ist. Zudem scheint Joel Ekelöf seinen stimmlichen Umfang nur noch vergrößert zu haben und die lyrisch-floydigen Gitarren-Soli von Cody Ford lassen bei mir ein um das andere Mal Gänsehaut entstehen. -
