Jesuits West List 12.07.18 List of Jesuits from Jesuits West Province with Credible Claims of Sexual Abuse of a Minor or Vulnerable Adult The Jesuits West Province of the Society of Jesus, which was formed in July of 2017 when the former California and Oregon Provinces became one, is comprised of Arizona, Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. This list of Jesuits with credible claims of sexual abuse of a minor or vulnerable adult, dating to 1950, is being published as part of our province’s ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability. Thankfully, sixteen years after shocking cases of clergy sexual abuse were brought to light in Boston in 2002, there has been significant reform in how the Church and religious orders like ours handle claims of sexual abuse. Jesuits West has both a zero-tolerance policy for credible claims made against a Jesuit involving a minor or a vulnerable adult and stringent procedures to ensure their safety. No Jesuit who has a credible claim of sexually abusing a minor or vulnerable adult is allowed to remain in public ministry. The majority of the cases related to the names that we release today date back decades. While even one case is abhorrent, it is consoling to know that the safeguards we have put in place are helping to create safe environments for everyone. The list contains the names of Jesuits who are or were members of Jesuits West Province, the former California and the former Oregon Provinces, against whom a credible claim of sexual abuse of a minor (under the age of 18) or a vulnerable adult has been made. Also included are the names of Jesuits from other provinces against whom there are credible claims resulting from their work while assigned to Jesuits West or the California or Oregon Provinces; and Jesuits of the former Oregon Province with credible claims already published as part of the Oregon bankruptcy filing. Finally, the list includes Jesuits listed in diocesan bankruptcies or listed by other dioceses. Inclusion in this list does not imply that the claims are true and correct or that the accused individual has been found guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. In many instances, the claims were made several years or decades after the alleged events and were not capable of an investigation and determination. Many claims were received after an accused priest was deceased. In those instances, the accused was unable to defend himself or deny the charges. The Province was unable to undertake a thorough investigation. Deceased individuals are included in this list based upon the fact that an accusation was reported. JESUITS WEST December 7, 2018 | 1 of 29 Many Catholic Dioceses have previously published lists of accused clergy. In many instances, Jesuits West was not informed of the claims nor did it have the opportunity to conduct an independent review. In the bankruptcy proceedings of the former Oregon Province, for example, the names of all clergy against whom a claim had been filed were published. Those claims were not independently investigated or verified. Consequently, Jesuits West now re- publishes those lists of names already in the public domain. While we attempted to be as thorough and accurate as possible in compiling the list, Jesuits West will undergo a review of our files in the spring of 2019 to be conducted by former FBI Executive Assistant Director, Dr. Kathleen McChesney, of Kinsale Management Consulting. If additional cases of Jesuits with credible claims of abuse are identified, we will release those names as well. The Jesuits West Province encourages anyone who has felt victimized by a Jesuit to contact both Mary Pat Panighetti, Advocacy Coordinator for Jesuits West, at 408-893-8398, and appropriate law enforcement and child-protective agencies. • The Jesuits and Chinese Science*
The Jesuits and Chinese Science* Chicheng Ma† June 2019 Abstract: Based on the historical context of the Jesuit mission to China from 1580, this paper examines the role of knowledge diffusion in scientific production. To facilitate their China mission, the Jesuits introduced European sciences to Chinese cultural elites—the Confucian literati. This stimulated the literati toward scientific research. In places where the Jesuits diffused European sciences, the number of Chinese scientific works increased significantly. But this effect disappeared after the Pope dismissed the Jesuit mission in 1773. The finding questions the conventional wisdom that the Confucian literati of imperial China disparaged science, and demonstrates the importance of opening to knowledge flow in scientific progress. Keywords: Jesuit mission; Science; Knowledge Diffusion; Elites; Human Capital; China JEL Codes: N35; N75; O15; O33; Z12 * Preliminary draft. Introduction Thanks to the missionary expansion of the Jesuits, European sciences were introduced to imperial China since 1580.

This Volume is in substance a republication of two articles, that appeared in No. 274 and No. 275 of the ' Quarterly Eeview,' with some additions and corrections. The additions are in the first section, which treats of the Constitution of the Society of Jesus. They consist of historical matter calculated to illustrate more amply this branch of the subject. The corrections are in both sections —the most important one, however, being in the second, which relates to points of Doctrine. In reference to these corrections the Author would say a few words of general explanation. On appearance in the 'Quarterly Eeview,' the articles were fortunate enough to attract the attention of a well-known Koman Catholic periodical, the 'Month.' They were subjected to incisive criticisms in a series of papers in its pages, which have been ascribed to a competent master of the matter. These have been issued in a reprint, prefaced by observations, complaining that no notice had been taken by the present writer of the strictures passed on his state- ments, and charging him, on ground of this silence, with want of candour.

  • SPIRIT THROUGH TIME a History of the Spirituality of the Society of Jesus José García De Castro Valdés SJ Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid (Spain)
SPIRIT THROUGH TIME A History of the Spirituality of the Society of Jesus José García de Castro Valdés SJ Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid (Spain) When the Society of Jesus was founded by Pope Paul III1, a new trend in spirituality arose inside the Catholic Church. Even though the followers and the first companions of Ignatius of Loyola were never known or never called “Ignatians”2, this new spirituality is nowadays recognized as “Ignatian Spirituality”, that is, a new path, a new method to search for God proposed by Ignatius and his first Companions3 and mainly fixed in the text of the Spiritual Exercises and the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus. In order to understand the origins and development of this spirituality, and how this movement of the Holy Spirit has reached us, we will try to follow the historical development of the Society of Jesus. It is a long period of 475 years full of life, including a wide variety of experiences all around the world and in many different fields of human culture. The more we approach the history of the Society of Jesus, the more we realize how wide and deep the contribution of the Jesuits was to build the history and culture of Western tradition. Because of the new features of this new congregation founded by Ignatius and his companions, the Jesuits could move around the world and were allowed to preach the Gospel through many different means, which they called “ministries”4. They did not adopt a single specific work (healing, education, preaching…) as their charismatic mission.

  • List of Jesuits with Credible Accusations of Sexual Abuse of a Minor
12/10/2018 List of Jesuits with Credible Accusations of Sexual Abuse of a Minor List of Jesuits with Credible Accusations of Sexual Abuse of a Minor Jesuits with Credible Allegations of Abuse of a Minor Dec. 7, 2018 - The Jesuits U.S. Central and Southern Province today released a list of names of Jesuits with credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. This list contains the names of the Jesuits who are or were members of the U.S. Central and Southern (UCS) Province and its predecessor entities: the New Orleans Province, the Missouri Province, or the Independent Region of Puerto Rico of the Society of Jesus. These men fall into one of three categories: Jesuits of this province against whom one or more credible claims of sexual abuse of a minor or a vulnerable adult have been made; Jesuits from other provinces against whom there are credible claims resulting from their work while assigned to this province; Jesuits of this province whose names have been published on diocesan websites or the websites of other Jesuit provinces. Inclusion on this list does not imply that the allegations are true and correct or that the accused individual has been found guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. Additional information about each man follows the initial list. While a list of each man’s assignments is included, it is important to note that the allegations do not necessarily stem from any of the listed assignments. Michael O. Barry, SJ Charles Bartles, SJ Jody Blanchard, SJ Claude P. Boudreaux, SJ John Campbell, SJ Cornelius J.
