Scope and Contents This collection is comprised of correspondence, house diaries (some in Spanish and Latin), financial records, manuscripts, marriage dispensations, church records, and community publications/materials. The bulk of the material dates between the 1880s and the 1960s. Historical Note The Jesuits were recruited to New Mexico by Bishop Jean Baptist Lamy of Santa Fe who requested Spanish speaking Jesuits from the Naples province. In 1867, Bishop Lamy, a group of five Jesuits (Fr. Livio Vigilante, Fr. Donato M. Gasparri, Fr. Raphael Bianchi, Bro. Prisco Caso, and Bro. Raphael Vezza)1, and fellow religious men and women journeyed by wagon from Fort Leavenworth to Santa Fe over the course of two months. Despite sickness, harsh conditions, and Native American communities defending their homes along the journey, the group arrived in Santa Fe and one year later took over the San Felipe Church in Albuquerque.2 The diary kept by Fr. Vigilante, detailing the journey on the Santa Fe Trail, is held in the collection; a partial translation and transcription is found in BIN NOR 3.0035, folder 2 and the original is found in BIN NOR 3.0016, folder 1. In 1883, the Immaculate Conception Church was completed in ‘New’ Albuquerque, an area which expanded around the railway. Immaculate Conception was supported by St. Mary’s School which grew to include a high school, administered by the Sisters of Charity beginning in 1891.3 San Felipe was transferred to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in 1965, while Immaculate Conception remains a Jesuit parish.     The Jesuits and Chinese Science* Chicheng Ma† June 2019 Abstract: Based on the historical context of the Jesuit mission to China from 1580, this paper examines the role of knowledge diffusion in scientific production. To facilitate their China mission, the Jesuits introduced European sciences to Chinese cultural elites—the Confucian literati. This stimulated the literati toward scientific research. In places where the Jesuits diffused European sciences, the number of Chinese scientific works increased significantly. But this effect disappeared after the Pope dismissed the Jesuit mission in 1773. The finding questions the conventional wisdom that the Confucian literati of imperial China disparaged science, and demonstrates the importance of opening to knowledge flow in scientific progress.     SPIRIT THROUGH TIME A History of the Spirituality of the Society of Jesus José García de Castro Valdés SJ Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid (Spain) When the Society of Jesus was founded by Pope Paul III1, a new trend in spirituality arose inside the Catholic Church. Even though the followers and the first companions of Ignatius of Loyola were never known or never called “Ignatians”2, this new spirituality is nowadays recognized as “Ignatian Spirituality”, that is, a new path, a new method to search for God proposed by Ignatius and his first Companions3 and mainly fixed in the text of the Spiritual Exercises and the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus. In order to understand the origins and development of this spirituality, and how this movement of the Holy Spirit has reached us, we will try to follow the historical development of the Society of Jesus. It is a long period of 475 years full of life, including a wide variety of experiences all around the world and in many different fields of human culture. The more we approach the history of the Society of Jesus, the more we realize how wide and deep the contribution of the Jesuits was to build the history and culture of Western tradition. Because of the new features of this new congregation founded by Ignatius and his companions, the Jesuits could move around the world and were allowed to preach the Gospel through many different means, which they called “ministries”4. They did not adopt a single specific work (healing, education, preaching…) as their charismatic mission.

This list contains the names of the Jesuits who are or were members of the U.S. Central and Southern (UCS) Province and its predecessor entities: the New Orleans Province, the Missouri Province, or the Independent Region of Puerto Rico of the Society of Jesus. These men fall into one of three categories: Jesuits of this province against whom one or more credible claims of sexual abuse of a minor or a vulnerable adult have been made; Jesuits from other provinces against whom there are credible claims resulting from their work while assigned to this province; Jesuits of this province whose names have been published on diocesan websites or the websites of other Jesuit provinces. Inclusion on this list does not imply that the allegations are true and correct or that the accused individual has been found guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. Additional information about each man follows the initial list.
