Thank you, Caroline Brown, NIC (International) Stephen Donaldson, Chief Commissioner Information on the European Scout Jamboree Poland 26th July – 6th August 2020 Introduction The European Scout Jamboree is a European Scouting event for young people aged between 14 and 18 and is a gathering of Scouts and Guides from all over Europe which will celebrate Scout and Guide values, strengthen our International community and provide young people in Europe with the opportunity to meet and learn from each other. The Scout Association has a long history of sending large number of Units (36 young people and four leaders, divided into four patrols) as part of a UK Contingent to attend Jamborees. The last European Jamboree was held in the UK in 2005 In Hylands Park in Essex. Each Contingent has enjoyed a varied and exciting experience. The European Scout Jamboree will take place at Sobieszewo Island in Gdansk and the dates of the event are 26 July – 6 August 2020. The event is being hosted by the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (Zwiazek Harcerstwa Polskiego – ZHP). This will the largest event delivered by Polish Scouting and Guiding and 25,000 young people and adult volunteers are expected to attend from all over Europe. UK Contingent The UK Contingent to the European Scout Jamboree will once again enjoy all the excitement and experiences that a large Jamboree offers. We will have 6 Units from Northern Ireland. The exact format of the Jamboree experience is still to be developed, but each Unit will take part in the Jamboree experience, and may organise pre or post Jamboree events if they wish What do we know about the Jamboree so far? The European Jamboree will take place on Sobieszwea Island in Gdansk and the dates of the Jamboree are 26 July – 6 August 2020. What to expect during the event Weather The month of July in Gdansk is usually hot and humid, with daily high temperatures of around 26°C. Some rain, particularly thunder storms are likely during the summer months in Gdansk. Humidity is likely to be high during the Jamboree, and this will make the ‘real feel’ temperature seem much hotter than the forecasted 26°C. The Site Sobieszewo Island is surrounded by the sea and rivers and a 20 minute drive from the historic city of Gdansk. The Island enjoys the status of an ecological island, its natural features and microclimate make it an ideal place for visiting during summer time. It offers various landscapes, the seaside forest, several kilometres of wide beach, picturesque open fields and farmland. Costs The costs for N Ireland participants for the Jamboree have not yet been finalised but will be no more than £1000. As with previous Jamborees, the costs will be paid in instalments and the instalment payment period is likely to run during 2018 and 2019. Local fundraising efforts for Jamboree participants are encouraged to focus on supporting young people to attend, however, financial status should not be a barrier to supporting the Jamboree. Further information about covering the cost of the Jamboree (including any grants available) will be issued once available. Make up of a Jamboree Unit Every Jamboree Unit is made up of 36 young people (in Patrols of 9) and 4 Leaders (one for each Patrol). The 4 Jamboree Unit leadership roles are: A Unit Leader, a Deputy Unit Leader and 2 Assistant Unit Leaders.
