The new season starts for FGR Photographs by Martin Stone Each year Rovers start the season with bags of optimism, plenty of new players, and the only realistic hope, survival! Whilst Tim Harris [manager] talks of finishing in the top five, his bottom line is that we stay in the Conference. A small town like Nailsworth is very lucky to have such a good football team, but competing week after week against full time professionals will not be easy. Personally, I would rather watch Rovers at the Lawn than travel hundreds of miles to see a group of overpaid Prima Donnas in a Premier Division match. So how about some of you Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa fans coming up and watching a few games this year, I think that you may be pleasantly surprised. There is a big west country evening derby against Exeter City on Tuesday 21 Sept. Exeter will no doubt bring a few hundred supporters and we don’t want to be outnumbered!

Commoners Cricket. Many thanks to Ron Birch for letting us know that our article in the NN resulted in a new player joining the club. (We’ve heard no mention of the refurbishment of the pavilion so I assume that no local benefactor has come up with £100k).

Whippet Racing? Surely not! It’s what they do in the North! Wrong again! I went up to a practice session one early summer's evening & was welcomed by a gentleman on FGR v Bristol City a moped dragging a motley collection of plastic bags on the end of a rope across the field. The folk I met were more green wellies and Subarus than flat caps and brown ale and they were at pains to stress that their dogs were pets first and “contestants” second. Somewhat ill-advisedly they have invited me to bring along my pooch for a trial run but I’d not be surprised if she ended up chasing real bunnies on the cycle path! Buildings that have been rebuilt after Now in stock: Japanese On- explosions! ion Sets and Aquadulce

In the late 19th C the Old Stamp Office in George Street Broad Beans was a grocery shop run by Mr Whiting. Alongside his other goods, gunpowder was also stored. In 1891 the loudest bang ever heard in Nailsworth occurred when the gunpowder exploded, demolishing the building! The Nailsworth Firemen were called but luckily no fire occurred. The shop was later re-built in a very similar style to the original. Today a Travel Agent and an interesting Antique Centre occupy the buildings. The other building to suffer an explosion was a communal Wash-house situated in Old Market. It was used by local cottagers, who had no hot water, apart from the kettle on the hob. As the warmth of the fires produced a dry atmosphere, the adjoining building was used as the explosives store for After the explosion at the Old Stamp Office, George the many local Quarries.
