Journal of early modern history (2021) 1-36 brill.com/jemh Lepanto in the Americas: Global Storytelling and Mediterranean History Stefan Hanß | ORCID: 0000-0002-7597-6599 The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK [email protected] Abstract This paper reveals the voices, logics, and consequences of sixteenth-century American storytelling about the Battle of Lepanto; an approach that decenters our perspective on the history of that battle. Central and South American storytelling about Lepanto, I argue, should prompt a reconsideration of historians’ Mediterranean-centered sto- rytelling about Lepanto—the event—by studying the social dynamics of its event- making in light of early modern global connections. Studying the circulation of news, the symbolic power of festivities, indigenous responses to Lepanto, and the autobi- ographical storytelling of global protagonists participating at that battle, this paper reveals how storytelling about Lepanto burgeoned in the Spanish overseas territories. Keywords Battle of Lepanto – connected histories – production of history – global history – Mediterranean – Ottoman Empire – Spanish Empire – storytelling Connecting Lepanto On October 7, 1571, an allied Spanish, Papal, and Venetian fleet—supported by several smaller Catholic principalities and military entrepreneurs—achieved a major victory over the Ottoman navy in the Ionian Sea. Between four hundred and five hundred galleys and up to 140,000 people were involved in one of the largest naval battles in history, fighting each other on the west coast of Greece.1 1 Alessandro Barbero, Lepanto: la battaglia dei tre imperi, 3rd ed. These cookies are necessary to provide our site and services and therefore cannot be disabled. It has a triple defensive belt with chemins de ronde, two round towers and covered entrance. It is a characteristic fact that the early fortification of the late 14th century shows clear similarities with the much older fortification of the city of Avignon 45 fig. An important element of transition is the tower of the sea wall guarding the entrance to the harbor and bears the escutcheons of Grand Masters Naillac and Orsini fig. Grand Master Fabrizio del Carretto had it armoured with a chemin de ronde to hold cannon emplacements. In the most exposed land-facing sectors, these included a thickening of the main wall, doubling of the width of the dry ditch, coupled with a transformation of the old counterscarp into massive outworks tenailles , the construction of bulwarks around most towers, and caponiers enfilading the ditch. Probably the door was closed by the Hospitallers for security reasons. The Fortress of Rhodes Konstantin S. Many supplications, which had to start by relating the personal case in detail, contain allusions to historical events. Whoever had taken part in fi ghting as a cleric –forbidden of course– might perhaps describe episodes from the Turkish conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the siege of Rhodes in 1480 or the battle of Pavia in 1525. Whoever had defi ed the papal embargo, which forbade supplying Muslims with materials essential to war, describes the goods and the circumstances of his Mediterranean trade. From the lowly perspective of personal experience, this article focuses on places and events of the early Portuguese expansion during the 15th century: the Azores, the Cape Verde Islands, the Guinea Islands etc., banishment to islands that were unpopulated and only just discovered; the sentencing of clerics to fi ght for Ceuta against the Muslims (they all used the pope as he were as an appellate body, this is the only reason why we know of them); husbands missing at sea; the role of the Order of Christ, and many other cases. -
The Making of Sultan Süleyman: a Study of Process/Es of Image-Making and Reputation Management
THE MAKING OF SULTAN SÜLEYMAN: A STUDY OF PROCESS/ES OF IMAGE-MAKING AND REPUTATION MANAGEMENT by NEV ĐN ZEYNEP YELÇE Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Sabancı University June, 2009 © Nevin Zeynep Yelçe 2009 All Rights Reserved To My Dear Parents Ay şegül and Özer Yelçe ABSTRACT THE MAKING OF SULTAN SÜLEYMAN: A STUDY OF PROCESS/ES OF IMAGE-MAKING AND REPUTATION MANAGEMENT Yelçe, Nevin Zeynep Ph.D., History Supervisor: Metin Kunt June 2009, xv+558 pages This dissertation is a study of the processes involved in the making of Sultan Süleyman’s image and reputation within the two decades preceding and following his accession, delineating the various phases and aspects involved in the making of the multi-layered image of the Sultan. Handling these processes within the framework of Sultan Süleyman’s deeds and choices, the main argument of this study is that the reputation of Sultan Süleyman in the 1520s was the result of the convergence of his actions and his projected image. In the course of this study, main events of the first ten years of Sultan Süleyman’s reign are conceptualized in order to understand the elements employed first in making a Sultan out of a Prince, then in maintaining and enhancing the sultanic image and authority. As such, this dissertation examines the rhetorical, ceremonial, and symbolic devices which came together to build up a public image for the Sultan. Contextualized within a larger framework in terms of both time and space, not only the meaning and role of each device but the way they are combined to create an image becomes clearer. -
