Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar Rehenuma Asmi Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy under the executive committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Rehenuma Asmi All rights reserved ABSTRACT Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam Rehenuma Asmi My study explores language ideologies in the capital city of Doha, Qatar, where school reform movements are placing greater emphasis on English language acquisition. Through ethnography and a revised theory of language ideologies, I argue that as languages come in greater contact in multi-lingual spaces, mediation must occur between the new and old relationships that are emerging as a result of population growth, policy changes and cross-cultural interactions. I interrogate the development concept of the “knowledge economy” as it is used to justify old and new language ideologies regarding Arabic and English. As Qataris change their education systems in response to the economic development framework of the “knowledge economy,” they are promoting language ideologies that designate English as useful for the economy and “global” citizenship and Qatari Arabic and Standard Arabic as useful for religious and cultural reasons. I argue that Standard English, through its association with the “knowledge economy,” becomes “de-localized” and branded an “international” language. This ideology presents English as a modern language free of the society in which it is embedded, to circulate around the globe. In contrast, Standard Arabic is represented as stiff, archaic language of religious traditions and Qatari Arabic is presented as the language of oral culture and ethnonationalism. -

These uprisings were attempts by the Arab peoples to over throw their governments and bring freedom and change to their societies in order to live in dignity and grace. These populist uprisings produced powerful poetry that of cuses on the corruption of Arab governments and the rampant economic social prob lems. -

Polish Mobilities and the Re-making of Self, Family and Community Katherine Botterill A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University February 2012 ABSTRACT The thesis explores the social and spatial mobilities of young Polish people and the ways in which the self, the family and the community are being re-made through mobility in an enlarged European Union. The research is based on an empirical study with post-accession current and return migrants in Edinburgh, Kraków and Katowice. It explores young people‘s perceptions and experiences of mobility in three key areas: the personal histories of mobility; the practice of mobility; and the relations of mobility. The thesis argues that social and spatial mobility are differentially and relationally experienced by young Polish people. Furthermore, through a critical engagement with theories of mobility and modernity it is argued that collective social forms (family and community) are being re-configured through mobility. Conceptually, the research is positioned within the inter-disciplinary study of mobilities, which assert the centrality of movement in contemporary social life (Urry and Sheller, 2006). Drawing on empirical evidence, the thesis provides an intimate reading of the personal transformations of mobility for young Polish migrants and offers micro-level analysis of theories of migration, mobility and modernity. V Źródła Humanistyki Europejskiej 5 Kraków 2012, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego ISBN 978-83-233-3465-1, ISSN 2080-5802 IWONA MILEWSKA Instytut Orientalistyki UJ The Mahabharata Epic, Its Translations and Its Influence on Polish Intellectual Circles and General Readers The Mahabharata, one of the two most famous Indian or, to be more precise, Sanskrit epics, is up till modern days not fully known to Polish intellectuals nor to general readers. It is, among other reasons, due to the lack of its comprehen- sive translation into Polish. Even if the general information about Sanskrit literature, and in particular about the epics, or the Mahabharata, was circulating throughout Europe since the turn of 18th and 19th centuries, its way to Poland was a long one. Nowadays in Poland it is obviously easier to find competent information on India and its literature but still in most cases the detailed descriptions of the Ma- habharata epic are included in books directed to specialists rather than to gen- eral readers not to mention fragments of its direct translations into Polish which are till now extremely rare. It is known that the Europeans became deeply interested in India when the British started to be present there. They were the first to raise the interest in their literature. In this context such names as William Jones, Charles Wilkins or Henry Thomas Colebrooke should be mentioned. Their works, mostly of linguistics character, started to circulate in Europe at the turn of 18 and 19th centuries. In France one of the first scholars who focused also on India was A. -

As a form of literacy, graffiti has existed throughout the ages. Many researches on epigraphy show that many examples of graffiti were left in- tact from the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. However, the purpose of their appearance was merely disputed in the scientific community. The main aim of this research is to ascertain the motives of the habits of inscribing graffiti among Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealths citizens. This study is a qualitative research that seeks an in-depth understanding of the phenomena of writing graffiti. Basic material for the research was gathered from ego-documents that are focused on the personal lives and experiences of the writers. The research is based on a detailed contextual analysis of several cases (case study method). This article examines several cases and gives some light on how and why graffiti were made. - 1 - Cultural Life in Independent Poland 1. Introduction 1. Difference between the atmosphere of the twenties and the thirties. The joy, even euphoria, that followed the recovery of independence in 1918 was faithfully noted by literature. Around 1930, the tone changed. The economic crisis, the violation of the constitution by the military junta, the emergence of fascist groupings on the Right, propagating antisemitism and announcing ‘a night of long knives’ for ‘Jews and intellectuals,’ converged with Hitler’s grab for power in neighbouring Germany. Marxist publications began to attract writers, although few felt able to place their trust in Stalin. The Communist Party of Poland, considered a foreign agent and, thus, illegal, was given a low rating in Moscow because of its efforts to adapt itself to specific local conditions; its leaders were called to Moscow in 1938 and executed by order of Stalin, while the party itself was disbanded under the pretext that it was infested with traitors. In intellectual circles a feeling of impotence and presentiments of an imminent European catastrophe prevailed. It is no wonder, then, that the literature of the thirties was marked by apocalyptic or humorously macabre visions. 2. Conditions for cultural life now very different. 3. Skamander - 2 - The dominant literary clique in Poland in the optimistic years of the 1920s, as distinct from the 1930s when the mood in the country became much gloomier and more apocalyptic was known as the the Skamander group. As the first generation of writers to come to maturity in an independent Poland, they were eager to throw off the heavy burden of commitment to the Polish cause which had weighed down literature in the nineteenth century. -

A JOURNEY THROUGH POLISH LITERATURE European Literature 09 OCTOBRE 2013 GORA BERNADETTE Henryk Sienkiewicz (1905), Władysław Reymont (1924), Czesław Miłosz (1980), Wisława Szymborska (1996). How many of you know these four authors and know what they have in common, besides their nationalities? The four of them were awarded a Nobel Prize but nevertheless remain little known outside of Poland. How many of you can give the name of, at least, one polish contemporary author? These examples, among many others, prove that Polish literature remains unknown despite it being a big part of European literature. To start my presentation, I’d like you to have a look on this quotation by Czesław Miłosz who wrote, among other, a book about the History of Polish Literature (The History of Polish Literature, Berckeley,1969). In his work, he wrote “Polish literature focused more on drama and the poetic expression of the self than on fiction (which dominated the English-speaking world). The reasons find their roots on the historical circumstances of the nation.” Over a first phase, it thus seems important to start out with a broad overview of the general history of Polish literature throughout the ages before we can understand what happened during the 20th century, and fully understand the main references to the previous time periods which we can find today. In Polish literature, historical problems have always been an essential characteristic. One can notice that Polish literature has always been torn between its social duties and literary obligations. With this in mind, it is possible for me to offer you the promised journey through my national literature. -
