Translator, Publisher, Ambassador: Wanda Dynowska and Her Indo-Polish Library Zofia Ziemann Ewa Dębicka-Borek Jagiellonian University The paper discusses the life and work of Wanda Dynowska aka Umadevi (1888- 1971), a Polish theosophist, social activist, journalist, poet, translator and editor, who settled in India in 1935, becoming a tireless promoter of Polish-Indian cultural relations. She translated the Bhagavad Gita into Polish, and in 1944 established (with Maurycy Frydman) the Indo-Polish Library/Biblioteka Polsko-Indyjska, a publishing house which brought out reference works on Indian religion and culture and literary anthologies, translated from Polish into English and from India’s many languages (Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati) into Polish, mostly via a third language. Although Dynowska is remembered in both her home countries, her translation and publishing work has been taken for granted and never examined to date. Based on yet unresearched archive material (correspondence and personal papers), as well as the translated texts, including their paratextual framing, the authors present Dynowska as an intercultural agent, placing her activity in the context of the Polish- Indian-British historical, cultural and political relations. Particular attention is paid to how she deliberately constructed and promoted the images of Poland and India, seeing a special affinity between the two nations oppressed by powerful empires: Russia and Britain. Dynowska’s unique enterprise of bringing together two distant cultures (semi/peripheral in Heilbron’s terms) by “building a bridge of books between the soul of India and Poland” (as she herself put it) was undoubtedly a commendable effort, but it also be seen as a site of manipulation. -

Text of Resolutions passed by the General Council of the Theosophical Society Freedom of Thought As the Theosophical Society has spread far and wide over the world, and as members of all religions have become members of it without surrendering the special dogmas, teachings and beliefs of their re- spective faiths, it is thought desirable to emphasize the fact that there is no doctrine, no opinion, by whomsoever taught or held, that is in any way binding on any member of the Society, none which any member is not free to accept or reject. Approval of its three Objects is the sole condition of membership. No teacher, or writer, from H. P. Blavatsky onwards, has any authority to impose his or her teachings or opinions on members. Every member has an equal right to follow any school of thought, but has no right to force the choice on any other. Neither a candidate for any office nor any voter can be rendered ineligible to stand or to vote, because of any opinion held, or because of membership in any school of thought. Opinions or beliefs neither bestow privileges nor inflict penalties. The Members of the General Council earnestly request every member of the Theosophical Society to maintain, defend and act upon these fundamental principles of the Society, and also fearlessly to exercise the right of liberty of thought and of expression thereof, within the limits of courtesy and consideration for others. Freedom of the Society The Theosophical Society, while cooperating with all other bodies whose aims and activities make such cooperation possible, is and must remain an organization entirely independent of them, not committed to any objects save its own, and intent on developing its own work on the broadest and most inclusive lines, so as to move towards its own goal as indicated in and by the pursuit of those objects and that Divine Wisdom which in the abstract is implicit in the title ‘The Theosophical Society’. -

1. MYSORE JUSTICE After I had sent my note1 on Shri H. C. Dassappa’s Case, I received the following from a Bangalore advocate: You have now material which is sufficient to give an indication of the independence of the Mysore Judiciary. It is undoubtedly under the control and lead of Sir D’Arcy Reilly. The other Judges in the High Court follow in his footsteps, and no single instance can be recalled when any Puisne Judge of the High Court of Mysore has had the strength to demur to even the excesses committed by the chief Justice in the language, form and tone of his judgements, the Government, which professes not to interfere with either the High Court or the Judiciary is evidently well satisfied about the Judges of the High Court of Mysore. For a dozen years important judgements have come from the Judges of the High Court which have clearly shown that they have yielded to the pressure of the bureaucracy while professing fear of God and of no man. Probably it is this practical docility that has made the Government Order on Political Reforms in the State silent to the point of being sinister as regards recommendations for the reform of the Judiciary in the State. To cap it all comes the pronouncement in Shri H. C. Dasappa’s case that in this country truth is so often degraded into a political catch-word.’ The reference to the country is wide enough in its mischief and implications so as to embrace all people whether Congressmen or others and whether they reside in the States or in British India. -

The Polish Journal of the Arts and Culture No. 13 (1/2015) / ARTICLE KAROLINA MARIA HESS* (Jagiellonian University) The Beginnings of Theosophy in Poland: From Early Visions to the Polish Theosophical Society1 ABSTRACT The paper analyses the functioning of groups promoting Theosophical ideas in Poland from the beginning of the 20th century. Subsequent institutional stages of Theosophical groups are discussed, such as the Circle led by Kazimierz Stabrowski, the Alba lodge, the Warsaw Theosophical Society, the Polish Theosophical Societies in Warsaw and in Nydek, up to and including the registration of the Polish Theosophical Society as a section of The Theoso- phical Society in Adyar. KEYWORDS Theosophy, Theosophical Society, Western Esotericism in Central and Eastern Europe, Polish Intellectual History in XX Century, The Polish Theosophical Society The history of esoteric groups is often surrounded by an aura of mystery. With regard to most of them, however, it is possible to establish the most important moments in their history, and to name the people who were engaged in their practices. Differing visions of activities of such nature have been recon- structed in academic research. We face such a situation in trying to reconstruct the beginnings of the Polish section of the Theosophical Society (henceforth TS), which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. -

Editing and translation managed by: Katarzyna Jagodzińska, Międzynarodowe Centrum Kultury / International Cultural Centre, Krakow Abstract The essay's goal is to interpret Jacek Malczewski's picture Adam Asnyk with Muse (1894-1897) as a symbolic work. The main argument is that the painting does not depict a scene with a poet being inspired by a muse. The starting point of the analysis is the conclusion that the Muse is not playing the lyre she is holding and that the wings of Hermes are attached only to one leg. The role of the instrument is crucial for the interpretation of the painting not only because it is not used in accordance with its function but also because of the planimetric as well as semantic relationships with other elements of the picture, above all with one of the sheets of paper on the table and the scythe held by a warrior in the spectral pageant. The Muse presses the sheet with the lyre, lifting it and directing its sharp point towards Asnyk's head. The sheet is made similar in its form to the scythe above it, directed towards the manacled young men above the poet. The comparison between the figures introduced in this way suggests that the real nature of the inspiration is destructive for the poet. A comprehensive interpretation of the relationship thus constituted leads to the conclusion that the symbolic meaning of the painting is based on the opposition between the conventional iconography of a poet and the idea of creation conceived as a liberation of the artist from traditional and ossified symbolism (music, the wings of Hermes).
