Chopin: Visual Contexts
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology g, 2011 © Department of Musicology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland JACEK SZERSZENOWICZ (Łódź) Chopin: Visual Contexts ABSTRACT: The drawings, portraits and effigies of Chopin that were produced during his lifetime later became the basis for artists’ fantasies on the subject of his work. Just after the composer’s death, Teofil Kwiatkowski began to paint Bal w Hotel Lambert w Paryżu [Ball at the Hotel Lambert in Paris], symbolising the unfulfilled hopes of the Polish Great Emi gration that Chopin would join the mission to raise the spirit of the nation. Henryk Siemiradzki recalled the young musician’s visit to the Radziwiłł Palace in Poznań. The composer’s likeness appeared in symbolic representations of a psychological, ethnological and historical character. Traditional roots are referred to in the paintings of Feliks Wygrzywalski, Mazurek - grający Chopin [Mazurka - Chopin at the piano], with a couple of dancers in folk costume, and Stanisław Zawadzki, depicting the com poser with a roll of paper in his hand against the background of a forest, into the wall of which silhouettes of country children are merged, personifying folk music. Pictorial tales about music were also popularised by postcards. On one anonymous postcard, a ghost hovers over the playing musician, and the title Marsz żałobny Szopena [Chopin’s funeral march] suggests the connection with real apparitions that the composer occasional had when performing that work. In the visualisation of music, artists were often assisted by poets, who suggested associations and symbols. Correlations of content and style can be discerned, for ex ample, between Władysław Podkowinski’s painting Marsz żałobny Szopena and Kor nel Ujejski’s earlier poem Marsz pogrzebowy [Funeral march]. -

MATERIALS STUDIA NORWIDIANA 38:2020 ENGLISH VERSION DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18290/sn.2020.38-11en BOGDAN BURDZIEJ KAABA VERSUS RINGTHEATER – THE HOLY CROSS CHURCH – WARSAW’S POGROM: TWO WORLDS AND THREE TRAGEDIES IN MODLITWA (1882) BY CYPRIAN NORWID Among the literary works written by Cyprian Norwid during the last years of his life there are ones that have not been extensively discussed yet.1 One example is a short prose piece titled Modlitwa [Prayer], which reads: – – – Do meczetu w Kaaba o godzinie modlitwy południowej wbiegł zapamiętalec i zawołał: „Gore! – – – dach świątyni w płomieniach!! – –” Parę Greków podróżnych i Europejczyków wraz uciekło – – żaden Arab głowy nie obrócił ani ziarn różańca nie pomylił, albowiem na południową przyszedłszy modlitwę, tęż pełnili… I po skończeniu jej powstawszy z ziemi szli spokojnie z zwykłą powagą – – i rozeszli się. V Źródła Humanistyki Europejskiej 5 Kraków 2012, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego ISBN 978-83-233-3465-1, ISSN 2080-5802 IWONA MILEWSKA Instytut Orientalistyki UJ The Mahabharata Epic, Its Translations and Its Influence on Polish Intellectual Circles and General Readers The Mahabharata, one of the two most famous Indian or, to be more precise, Sanskrit epics, is up till modern days not fully known to Polish intellectuals nor to general readers. It is, among other reasons, due to the lack of its comprehen- sive translation into Polish. Even if the general information about Sanskrit literature, and in particular about the epics, or the Mahabharata, was circulating throughout Europe since the turn of 18th and 19th centuries, its way to Poland was a long one. Nowadays in Poland it is obviously easier to find competent information on India and its literature but still in most cases the detailed descriptions of the Ma- habharata epic are included in books directed to specialists rather than to gen- eral readers not to mention fragments of its direct translations into Polish which are till now extremely rare. It is known that the Europeans became deeply interested in India when the British started to be present there. They were the first to raise the interest in their literature. In this context such names as William Jones, Charles Wilkins or Henry Thomas Colebrooke should be mentioned. Their works, mostly of linguistics character, started to circulate in Europe at the turn of 18 and 19th centuries. In France one of the first scholars who focused also on India was A. -

Making and Defending a Polish Town: "Lwow" (Lemberg), 1848-1914 HARALD BINDER ANY EAST CENTRAL EUROPEAN towns and cities bear several names, reflecting the ethnic and religious diversity once characteristic of M the region. The town chosen in 1772 by the Habsburgs as capital of their newly acquired province of Galicia serves as an example. In the second half of the nineteenth century Ruthenian national populists referred to the city as "L'viv"; Russophiles designated the city "L'vov." For Poles and Polo- nized Jews the town was "Lwow," and for Germans as well as German- and Yiddish-speaking Jews the city was "Lemberg." The ethnic and linguistic reality was, in fact, much less clear than these divisions would suggest. For much of the period of Habsburg rule, language barriers remained permeable. The city's inhabitants were multilingual, often employing different languages depending on the type of communication in which they were engaged. By the late nineteenth century, however, nationalists came to regard language as one of the most important objective characteristics defining their respective national communities. For example, Ruthenian intellectuals felt more com- fortable communicating in Polish, but, when acting as politicians, they spoke and wrote in one of the varieties of "Ruthenian." The many names for the Galician capital can also be related to specific periods in the history of the city. From this perspective, moving from one name to another mirrors shifting power relations and cultural orientation. The seventeenth century historian Bartlomiej .Zimorowicz chose such a chronological structure for his "History of the City of Lwow." He traced the fate of the town as it changed from a "Ruthenian" (from 1270) to a "German" (from 1350) to a "Polish" city (from 1550).1 Zimorowicz's method of dividing Center for Austrian Studies Austrian History Yearbook 34 (2003): 57-81. -
