Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology g, 2011 © Department of Musicology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland JACEK SZERSZENOWICZ (Łódź) Chopin: Visual Contexts ABSTRACT: The drawings, portraits and effigies of Chopin that were produced during his lifetime later became the basis for artists’ fantasies on the subject of his work. Just after the composer’s death, Teofil Kwiatkowski began to paint Bal w Hotel Lambert w Paryżu [Ball at the Hotel Lambert in Paris], symbolising the unfulfilled hopes of the Polish Great Emi gration that Chopin would join the mission to raise the spirit of the nation. Henryk Siemiradzki recalled the young musician’s visit to the Radziwiłł Palace in Poznań. The composer’s likeness appeared in symbolic representations of a psychological, ethnological and historical character. Traditional roots are referred to in the paintings of Feliks Wygrzywalski, Mazurek - grający Chopin [Mazurka - Chopin at the piano], with a couple of dancers in folk costume, and Stanisław Zawadzki, depicting the com poser with a roll of paper in his hand against the background of a forest, into the wall of which silhouettes of country children are merged, personifying folk music. Pictorial tales about music were also popularised by postcards. On one anonymous postcard, a ghost hovers over the playing musician, and the title Marsz żałobny Szopena [Chopin’s funeral march] suggests the connection with real apparitions that the composer occasional had when performing that work. In the visualisation of music, artists were often assisted by poets, who suggested associations and symbols. Correlations of content and style can be discerned, for ex ample, between Władysław Podkowinski’s painting Marsz żałobny Szopena and Kor nel Ujejski’s earlier poem Marsz pogrzebowy [Funeral march]. -

The development of Polish Romanticism, the trend which had become victorious in Poland before 1830 with such outstanding works as Antoni Malczewski's Maria, Seweryn Goszczyńskie Zamek kaniow ski (The Castle of Kaniów) and, above all, with Adam Mickiewicz's poetry, from Ballads and Romances to Konrad Wallenrod, after 1831, after the collapse of the November uprising, took two different cour ses: in emigration, where the greatest poets of the epoch, like Mic kiewicz and Słowacki, lived, and in the partitioned Poland. Series III of The Picture o f Polish Literature is devoted to that Roman ticism which developed in Poland and which, though presently less known than the literature written in the Great Emigration, exerted considerable influence on the spiritual formation of Poles. Included in the Series are both syntheses and portraits of particular writers (analysis of their works, bibliography, anthology of texts), prepared by the best scholars in the field of history of Romanticism. In the main, writers presented in this Series are, with such rare exceptions as Aleksander Fredro, minor artists, to a great extent influenced by the conventions of the pre-November Romanticism. -

The University of Texas at Austin, 2004 Supervisor: Katherine Arens This dissertation tests Benedict Anderson’s thesis about the coherence of imagined communities by tracing how Galicia, as the heart of a Polish culture in the nineteenth century that would never be an independent nation state, emerged as an historical, cultural touchstone with present day significance for the people of Europe. After the three Partitions and Poland’s complete disappearance from political maps of Europe, substitute images of Poland were sought that could replace its lost kingdom with alternate forms of national identity grounded in culture and tradition rather than in politics. Not the hereditary dynasty, not Prussia or Russia, but Galicia emerged as the imagined and representative center of a Polish culture without a state. This dissertation juxtaposes political realities with canonical literary texts that provide images of a cultural community among ethnic Germans and Poles sharing the border of Europe. -

Intuition is what we usually mean by this cognitive power, thanks to which cognition occurs once (on a one-off basis) as though in one act, and synchronously, at one time. It does not even have to be accompa- nied by any special intellectual effort on the part of the cognizant. Intu- ition usually initiates the cognitive process, although it sometimes sup- ports it at other stages. In the natural language it is often combined with a kind of feeling or premonition. In a more precise sense, in the context of the history of philosophy, and especially of its Platonic current, intu- ition concerns not only the beginnings of cognition but also the final act of learning of a problem or phenomenon. The intuition crowning the cognitive process is of intellectual nature. It is accompanied by a certain “vision”, a comprehensive image of the object, Greek θεωρία (‘watching, observation’).1 It is this cognitive power that is active at the time of sum- marizing the long-term discursive efforts, during which the problem 1 Cf. Slowacki's Chopin
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 9, 2011 © Department of Musicology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland AGATA SEWERYN (Lublin) Slowacki’s Chopin ABSTRACT: Supposed analogies between Fryderyk Chopin and Juliusz Słowacki form a recurring thread that runs through the subject literature of Romantic culture. Legions of literati, critics, literary scholars and musicologists have either attempted to find affinities between Chopin and Słowacki (on the level of both biography and creative output) or else have energetically demonstrated the groundlessness of all analogies, opinions and assumptions. ConseQuently, stereotypes have been formed and then strengthened concerning the relations between the two creative artists, particularly the conviction of Slowacki’s dislike of Chopin and his music, which - in the opinion of many scholars - the poet simply did not understand. Considerations of this kind most often centre on a famous letter written by Słowacki to his mother in February 1845. However, a careful reading of this letter and its comparison with Slowacki’s other utterances on the subject of Chopin shows that opinions of the poet’s alleged insanity, petty-mindedness or lack of subtlety in his contacts with Chopin’s music are most unjust. The analysed letter is not so much anti-Chopin as anti-Romantic. It inscribes itself perfectly in the context of the thinking of “the Słowacki of the last years”, since the poet negates crucial aesthetic features of Romantic music, but at the same time criticises his own works: W Szwajcarii [In Switzerland] and, in other letters, Godzina myśli [An hour of thought] and the “picture of the age”, the poetical novel Lambro. -

Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 9, 2011 © Department of Musicology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland MAGDALENA DZIADEK (Poznań) On collective forms of the Chopin cult in Poland during the nineteenth century ABSTRACT: This article is devoted to specific forms of the Chopin cult that developed in Poland during the nineteenth century. Due to the socio-political situation in the country during the period of the Partitions and the influence of tradition, this cult was manifest first and foremost in the joint experiencing of anniversaries connected with the composer on the part of members of local communities or the entire nation. The basic medium of that experience was the press, in which biographic articles, sketches on his music and also poetical works devoted to the composer were an obligatory part of the anniversaries of Chopin’s birth and death. In this way, the Chopin cult in Poland became primarily a literary phenomenon. Also linked to the traditional culture of the letter that was Polish culture of the nineteenth century is the characteristic form of the Chopin cult known as the obchód. The communal character of the obchód was re- flected in its specific form and content. One of the prime concerns was the need to forcibly communicate the fact that Chopin’s music was a national good. Thus at the centre of the theatrically-managed obchód stood an orator or actor declaiming against the background of Chopin’s music. For the purposes of these declamations, a huge amount of literature was produced, examples of which are discussed in the article. Another characteristic “anniversary” product were re-workings of Chopin composi- tions for large orchestral and choral forces, treated as “ceremonial”. -

The article deals with the landscape arrangement of monumental sculptures in the creative work of Arnold Rӧhring. The text reviews the role and the importance of landscape arrangement of monumental sculptures in the architectural composition of the city of Lviv. Examples of works of monumental sculpture of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are described in the article. Keywords: monumental sculpture, Arnold Rӧhring, landscape organization, city parks. 1. Introduction The city center of Lviv is characterized by richness and diversity of natural, urban and architectural forms, which, together, form a unique historical landscape-architectural complex. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the city center developed rapidly by building up, mainly, the southern sector of the city. After construction of an underground reservoir for the Poltva river, a new central cell began to be formed. Construction of a considerable number of residential and public buildings led, among others, to erection of the building of the Diet of Galicia and Lodomeria. According to the principles of urban contemporary European development, the planning of planted boulevards and city parks was initiated. On the boulevards, squares and parks there were located monumental sculptures, mostly the memorials of famous public figures, writers and poets. The tradition of combination of sculptures and objects of the landscape in Europe goes back to Ancient Rome.
