The human capacity to utter falsehood, to lie, to negate what is the case, stands at the heart of speech and of the reciprocities between words and world. It may be that ‘truth’ is the more limited, the more special of the two conditions. We are a mammal who can bear false witness. A definição básica de pseudotradução é: um texto apresentado como tradução, mas que, na verdade, é um texto original. Nela, um tradutor imaginário afirma estar traduzindo uma obra inexistente: tanto tradutor como obra são produtos de ficção. Um recurso utilizado há muitos séculos de diversas maneiras e com diferentes motivações, ela é, muitas vezes, considerada farsa, fraude, falsificação ou mesmo mero gracejo narrativo sem grandes consequências. Entretanto, ao contrário do que essa visão simplória pode sugerir, ela tem estado presente em momentos importantes da história ocidental. Em sua relação com a literatura, a pseudotradução tem sido utilizada ao longo dos séculos como um poderoso recurso narrativo na composição de obras que concorreram para a transformação de sistemas culturais e literários. A partir da perspectiva do potencial criador e transformador da pseudotradução, este trabalho apresenta cinco obras produzidas em diferentes épocas da história ocidental, as quais, de alguma maneira, contribuíram para a dinâmica dos sistemas literários de suas épocas. Em todas elas, o fato de terem sido concebidas como pseudotraduções foi elemento fundamental e decisivo para seus efeitos. Cada uma dessas obras, distribuídas em períodos pontuais entre os séculos XII e XX, utilizou o recurso da pseudotradução de maneira diferente; todavia, todas elas promoveram transformações de paradigmas literários e questionamentos sobre questões humanas e sobre a própria ficção. São elas: The History of the Kings of Britain , de Geoffrey of Monmouth, século XII; Don Quijote de la Mancha , de Miguel de Cervantes, século XVII; O castelo de Otranto , de Horace Walpole, século XVIII; O nome da rosa , de Umberto Eco, e o conto “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius”, de Jorge Luis Borges, ambas produções do século XX. A observação dessas obras desde a perspectiva do uso da pseudotradução permite considerar a tradução além do processo de versão de uma língua para outra, como processo de escritura per se . The basic definition of pseudotranslation is: a text introduced as a translation, but that is actually an original text. In this process, an imaginary translator claims to be translating a work that does not exist: both translator and work are products of fiction. A resource used for centuries in different ways and for various reasons, it has been frequently considered as sham, fraud, fakery, or even sheer witticism without serious consequences. However, instead of what this naïve view may suggest, it has been present in important moments of western history. As far as its connection to literature is concerned, pseudotranslation has been used along the centuries as a powerful narrative resource in the composition of works that contributed to the transformation of cultural and literary systems. From the perspective of the creative and transformative potential of pseudotranslation, this study introduces five works written in different periods of western history, which somehow contributed to the dynamics of the literary systems of their ages. In all of them, the fact of having been conceived as pseudotranslations was fundamental and decisive for their effects.

As a form of literacy, graffiti has existed throughout the ages. Many researches on epigraphy show that many examples of graffiti were left in- tact from the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. However, the purpose of their appearance was merely disputed in the scientific community. The main aim of this research is to ascertain the motives of the habits of inscribing graffiti among Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealths citizens. This study is a qualitative research that seeks an in-depth understanding of the phenomena of writing graffiti. Basic material for the research was gathered from ego-documents that are focused on the personal lives and experiences of the writers. The research is based on a detailed contextual analysis of several cases (case study method). This article examines several cases and gives some light on how and why graffiti were made. The work was exploited to endow Anglo-Norman Britain with a founda- tion myth on which to build a common (though not unproblematic) political identity, giving rise to a new historiographical tradition in Latin, French, and English. At the same time, the great deeds of past British kings form a treasure house of narratives, with the figure of King Arthur at the heart of a new literary phenomenon, the Arthurian romance. The entertainment potential of the DGB is flagged up by Geoffrey of Monmouth himself in his prologue, where he sketches a context of oral tradi- tion and popular story-telling “about Arthur and the many others who suc- ceeded after the Incarnation” related “by many people as if they had been entertainingly and memorably written down”.1 The exact nature of this pre-existing narrative tradition is not specified, though the archivolt of the Porta della Peschiera of Modena Cathedral, depicting a scene where Arthur and his knights appear to be attacking a castle to free the captive Winlogee (Guinevere?), is proof of the popularity of tales of Arthur in western Europe by 1120–40.2 The huge success of the DGB therefore reinforced and reshaped an already existing tradition, and as such was instrumental in the flowering of the courtly Arthurian romances of the latter 12th century. Geoffrey of Monmouth made King Arthur enter the Latinate cultural mainstream.

    Concealed Criticism: The Uses of History in Anglo­Norman Literature, 1130­1210 By William Ristow Submitted to The Faculty of Haverford College In partial fulfillment of the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in History 22 April, 2016 Readers: Professor Linda Gerstein Professor Darin Hayton Professor Andrew Friedman Abstract The twelfth century in western Europe was marked by tensions and negotiations between Church, aristocracy, and monarchies, each of which vied with the others for power and influence. At the same time, a developing literary culture discovered new ways to provide social commentary, including commentary on the power-negotiations among the ruling elite. This thesis examines the the functions of history in four works by authors writing in England and Normandy during the twelfth century to argue that historians used their work as commentary on the policies of Kings Stephen, Henry II, and John between 1130 and 1210. The four works, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, Master Wace’s Roman de Brut, John of Salisbury’s Policraticus, and Gerald of Wales’ Expugnatio Hibernica, each use descriptions of the past to criticize the monarchy by implying that the reigning king is not as good as rulers from history. Three of these works, the Historia, the Roman, and the Expugnatio, take the form of narrative histories of a variety of subjects both imaginary and within the author’s living memory, while the fourth, the Policraticus, is a guidebook for princes that uses historical examples to prove the truth of its points. By examining the way that the authors, despite the differences between their works, all use the past to condemn royal policies by implication, this thesis will argue that Anglo-Norman writers in the twelfth century found history-writing a means to criticize reigning kings without facing royal retribution.

It began in seventeenth-century France as a distinctive way of combining his- torical chronologies with fictive narratives. In Romantic Scotland, historical fiction underwent a further transfomation, inspired by both antiquarian scholarship and crisis-oriented journalism. The first comprehensive study of its subject for many years, The Historical Novel in Europe highlights both the French invention and Scottish re-invention of historical fiction, showing how these two events pre- pared the genre’s broad popularity during the nineteenth and twen- tieth centuries. Basile Baudez Early modern Polish architectural thought is largely absent from standard surveys of Western art and architecture. If Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski has recently studied the history of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth1 and if Andrezj Rottermund’s work on neo-classicism has been partly translated2, no general study of eighteenth-century East European or Polish architecture exists in English apart from Stefan Muthesius’ brief account in Art, architecture and Design in Poland, 966- 1990 (Königstein im Taunus: K. R. Langewiesche Nachfolger H. Köster Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1994). Due to a language barrier, limited or restricted access to primary and secondary sources, the situation of East-European studies began to change only in the 1990s and with time, historiography has shifted its concern from the strict research of a East-West borderland as it was defined by Oscar Halecki in 1980 in Borderlands of western civilization: a history of East Central Europe, to the study of multidirectional cultural transfers3. The historic notion of connected centres played an important role in understanding these phenomena, a more useful tool to think the age of Enlightenment than considering the cultural geography of Central Europe only in terms of centres and peripheries4.

    Chapter 8 Geoffrey of Monmouth’s De gestis Britonum and Twelfth-Century Romance Françoise Le Saux Geoffrey of Monmouth’s De gestis Britonum had a long and influential after- life. The work was exploited to endow Anglo-Norman Britain with a founda- tion myth on which to build a common (though not unproblematic) political identity, giving rise to a new historiographical tradition in Latin, French, and English. At the same time, the great deeds of past British kings form a treasure house of narratives, with the figure of King Arthur at the heart of a new literary phenomenon, the Arthurian romance. The entertainment potential of the DGB is flagged up by Geoffrey of Monmouth himself in his prologue, where he sketches a context of oral tradi- tion and popular story-telling “about Arthur and the many others who suc- ceeded after the Incarnation” related “by many people as if they had been entertainingly and memorably written down”.1 The exact nature of this pre-existing narrative tradition is not specified, though the archivolt of the Porta della Peschiera of Modena Cathedral, depicting a scene where Arthur and his knights appear to be attacking a castle to free the captive Winlogee (Guinevere?), is proof of the popularity of tales of Arthur in western Europe by 1120–40.2 The huge success of the DGB therefore reinforced and reshaped an already existing tradition, and as such was instrumental in the flowering of the courtly Arthurian romances of the latter 12th century. Geoffrey of Monmouth made King Arthur enter the Latinate cultural mainstream.
