BOOKS, PRINTS, AND TRAVEL: READING IN THE GAPS OF THE ORIENTALIST ARCHIVE ELISABETH A. FRASER Writing to Madame de Re´camier during an arduous voyage to the Levant in 1817 and 1818, the beleaguered Comte Auguste de Forbin pleaded passionately for letters from her to alleviate the horrors of his journey: a difficult passage at sea, the death of a hired travelling companion, heat and plague. ‘I need them, I have been cruelly tested. Never was a voyage more unfortunate,’ he wrote. Subse- quent letters describe his ‘terrible fear’ of the plague in Constantinople (‘death is everywhere’), and the ‘devouring heat’ of Egypt.1 And yet Forbin later made light of the journey’s difficulties in his published account, the Voyage dans le Levant (1819), a sentiment reinforced by Franc¸ois-Rene´ de Chateaubriand in his review: ‘The Comte de Forbin’s publication will finally prove that today one can do quickly and easily what in the past demanded much time and effort.’2 Similarly, the Comte Marie-Gabriel de Choiseul-Gouffier’s magnificent Voyage pittoresque de la Gre`ce (1782–1822), one of Forbin’s primary models, gives no hint of the woes that dogged its production: revolution, legal battles, work lost in transport, dishonest printers, artists making off with commissioned drawings, and so on. To follow Choiseul-Gouffier’s trail through the archives is to wade in rancour, regret and litigiousness to a degree unsuspected by the reader of his serenely beautiful Voyage pittoresque.3 In a departure from earlier writing on colonialism, scholars today expect to find this kind of contradiction in the accounts of European travellers about in the world. -

Do Books Cause Revolutions? An Empirical Test of Robert Darnton’s The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France* Yu Sasaki† This version: March 22, 2020 Preliminary; comments welcome Abstract This article is the first empirical test of Robert Darnton (1995)’s thesis that illegal books clandes- tinely circulated contributed to the French Revolution. The provocative argument has spawned a vibrant industry in historical research but quantitative studies have not been offered. I do so by constructing a new data set that digitizes all 720 illegal works in Darnton’s published corpus. Using the number of émigrés and deaths sentences as my proxies for the Revolution, I show that the diffusion of illegal books has a positive and significant impact on nobles and clergy- men who fled from France but not those who received death sentences. My findings are robust to a host of covariates that could determine diffusion and the two revolutionary outcomes. My analysis implies that an information revolution in which technological progress allows for a fast and inexpensive transmission of information could facilitate a political revolution. *I thank Takayuki Kubouchi for his able research assistance. Chapter 3 Heroines in a Time of War: Nelvana of the Northern Lights and Wonder Woman as Symbols of the United States and Canada Scores of superheroes emerged in comic books just in time to defend the United States and Canada from the evil machinations of super-villains, Hitler, Mussolini, and other World War II era enemies. By 1941, War Nurse Pat Parker, Miss America, Pat Patriot, and Miss Victory were but a few of the patriotic female characters who had appeared in comics to fight villains and promote the war effort. These characters had all but disappeared by 1946, a testament to their limited wartime relevance. Though Nelvana of the Northern Lights (hereafter “Nelvana”) and Wonder Woman first appeared alongside the others in 1941, they have proven to be more enduring superheroes than their crime-fighting colleagues. In particular, Nelvana was one of five comic book characters depicted in the 1995 Canada Post Comic Book Stamp Collection, and Wonder Woman was one of ten DC Comics superheroes featured in the 2006 United States Postal Service (USPS) Commemorative Stamp Series. The uniquely enduring iconic statuses of Nelvana and Wonder Woman result from their adventures and character development in the context of World War II and the political, social, and cultural climates in their respective English-speaking areas of North America. Through a comparative analysis of Wonder Woman and Nelvana, two of their 1942 adventures, and their subsequent deployment through government-issued postage stamps, I will demonstrate how the two characters embody and reinforce what Michael Billig terms “banal nationalism” in their respective national contexts. -

CHAPTER 6 JAMES AND WAINWRIGHT BELLHOUSE LTD. COTTON SPINNERS The business venture started by David Bellhouse (1764 – 1840) that seems least related to the rest is cotton spinning. This business was passed to his sons, James (1796 – 1874) and Wainwright Bellhouse (1800 – 1885), about a decade before the father’s death. By 1833, David Bellhouse had ceased to list himself as a cotton spinner in the Manchester directories. Wain- wright Bellhouse first appeared in the Manchester directories in 1832 with his occupation given as cotton spinner; James Bellhouse followed in 1836. The firm was know as Messrs. Bellhouse by 18311 and as James and Wainwright (J. & W.) Bellhouse by 1833.2 Advertisement for the Medlock New Mill3 129 The traditional date for the start of J. & W. Bellhouse is 1792.4 However, this is the year in which David Bellhouse senior took up residence in Faulkner Street and began to work inde- pendently as a joiner and builder, not the year the spinning business started. David Bellhouse built the original mill, associated with the firm known as the Medlock New Mill, in 1806 and so the beginning of the firm should be dated from that year. The mill was just outside the boundary of the Township of Manchester as defined in 1800.5 It was bounded by the Medlock River and by Pritchard, York and Charles Streets in Chorlton on Medlock or Chorlton Row. The mill was situated directly across the Medlock River from all the other Bellhouse enterprises, which were in Hunt or Whitworth Street. David Bellhouse senior built a second mill at this location in 1836.6 Sometime before 1851 a third mill was added. -

Smith Satoru Fukamachi Faculty of Humanities, Doho University, Nagoya 453-8540, Japan; [email protected] Received: 1 September 2020; Accepted: 26 October 2020; Published: 29 October 2020 Abstract: Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, is widely said to have been rejected by W. H. Smith, but there is no doubt that this did not happen. The letter sent to Wilde by the publisher strongly indicates that W. H. Smith contemplated removing the July issue of Lippincott’s Magazine, but does not go so far as to say that the bookstore did. This letter is the only evidence, however, that this is not absolute. The refusal to sell is mere speculation. The fact that none of Wilde’s contemporaries mentioned the incident of The Picture of Dorian Gray that supposedly happened, while the boycott of George Moore’s Esther Waters, which was much less topical than this one, was widely reported and discussed, provides further evidence that Wilde’s work was not rejected. Given that the censorship of literary works by private enterprises was still topical in the 1890s, it is unbelievable that the rejection of Wilde’s novel would not have been covered by any newspaper. It makes no sense, except to think that such a thing did not exist at all. It is also clear that this was not the case in the 1895 Wilde trial. Wilde’s lawyer argued that the piece was not a social evil because it was sold uninterruptedly, and the other side, which would have liked to take advantage of it in any way, never once touched on the boycott. -

Or, in simpler terms, we’re hiring people who are good with words and interested in journalism, regardless of whether they call themselves writers. Writing can be a tough craft to claim, and a hard kind of work to pin down. That romanticized vision of happily pecking at a laptop keyboard next to a steaming hot latte at the local coffee shop, words flowing effortlessly onto the page? I’ll level with you: that rarely happens. Laptops and coffee shops are great, don’t get me wrong. I love to work at coffee shops, even just answering emails. Often I’m there more for exposure to daylight or because part of me is still chasing that idealized notion of what a writer is or does. There is the research, then there are interviews, and transcribing, and finally there is the putting words onto paper (or a screen). And wringing the words out is hard work, not to be underestimated. But the good news is that the work doesn’t end there. That’s where the editors come in, and where writing becomes a truly collaborative act. -

Their activism centred on the working poor, and specifically on those workers whose financial necessity forced them into exploitative and underpaid work, causing them to become ‘blacklegs’ who undercut the wages of other workers. As the generally irregular nature of their employment made these workers’ situations difficult to document, Black and Harkness sought alternative ways to portray blackleg work and workers.
