Tommy Martin - Uilleann pipes prices

Dec 2016

Woods I provide pipes made from Ebony (Gabon and Indian) and Honduran Rosewood. Other woods pass my way from time to time (Lignum Vitae, Katalox, Zircote, African Blackwood) so I’ll always let a customer know if I have anything extra in stock.

I usually make main stocks from a Rosewood or Mopane and stain them to the rest of the set if the rest of the pipes are made from a dark colored wood. Ebony main stocks can be made for an extra fee. Market prices apply so contact me for details. For an ebony set of pipes the most economical and practical choice for a main stock is Delrin which is an acetal polymer that is used more and more by all kinds of instrument makers in place of exotic hardwoods that are becoming harder to source.

Metals Any metal you want as long as its brass. For an extra fee I can offer silver plated metalwork solid silver chanter keys.

Decorative mounts Historically, ivory and bone have been used as decorative and protective end mounts for Uilleann pipes and there are other options nowadays.

Some people don’t like synthetic or imitation ivory mounts for environmental and aesthetic reasons and some don’t like the boxwood mounts for similar reasons. Keeping this in mind I’ll offer both.

Honduras Rosewood, Boxwood and brass.

Ebony, imitation ivory and brass.

Uilleann Pipes Costs

Practice set $1465*

Component parts of a practice set

D chanter $1000 Leather Bag (with stocks) $200 *stocks made by me or Kelleher are same price Vinyl Bag “ “ $60 Bellows see below*

Bellows and bags made by Niall Kelleher and Daniela Ferretti

*The above practice set price includes a brown cherry bellows from Niall Kelleher with current Dollar-Euro exchange rates in mind (dec ’16) . Go to www.kellehertrad.com and choose your bellows. I’ll order it add it to your set of pipes and adjust the cost to suit.

I also offer a ‘budget’ or student chanter for $600

This chanter has a key which I think is necessary for the student piper. There's a simple mount at the upper end of the chanter. I'll use whatever lighter coloured wood (boxwood, lignum) or plastic imitation ivory for this mount. I can and may use darker wood for this mount when making these chanters from Rosewood and Mopane. There's just a brass ferrule at the bottom and no other key blocks. These changes from my regular chanters reduce the costs a lot but they sound as good as any other D chanter I'll make.

Main stock and drones $1650

Itemized price list and extras

I make chanters and drones in D, C, B.

D chanters cost $1000 C and B chanters cost $1100

I offer two options for C and B chanters. I make one style of C and B chanters that are based on the work of the 19th century Dublin makers Coyne and Kenna. These have a lovely mellow traditional sound. I make a different style of C chanter based on a Matt Kiernan model from the 1960’s and I have designed a chanter in the key of B based on scaled measurements from the C chanter. Both these chanters have a very slightly larger internal and finger holes which gives the chanter a larger tone with a little more brightness and a small but more volume, but certainly not loud.

All chanters come with a wood top and spare as standard. Budget chanters and discounted chanters do not come with a spare reed as standard.

Reeds are $50 each for my chanters. I try not to make reeds for other makers pipes. Especially living makers. But I’ll asses each request case by case.

Chanter Keys $125 each F, G#, Bb, C

Tenor and Baritone Regulators are $1000 each. Pictures to come!
