John Platter’s Guide
John Platter came to South Africa as a foreign correspondent, bureau chief for UPI, in the late 1970s. The Rand Daily Mail wine column he began after leaving fulltime journalism to farm in Franschhoek expanded into an annual wine guide which he and his wife Erica wrote and self-published. It was an instant success. Sold by the Platters after 20 years, it remains a best-seller. Their travel-wine-adventure story Africa Uncorked won numerous international laurels including the UK's most prestigious Glenfiddich Award.

Tasting Notes: Tasting Notes: Elegant, fresh and lively - this wine is rich in Eye-catching faint salmon pink hue. Bubbles minerality with hints of brioche, citrus and rise in a consistent vigorous, lively stream. apple notes. Good vibrancy on the nose with Gentle berry notes on the nose – strawberry perfume notes balancing the ripe fruitiness and and raspberry with a slight cream and biscuit fresh lime character. The palate displays a crisp nuance. The palate is vibrant and lively with natural acidity, however rounded with a crisp berry fruit flavours – raspberries and creamy texture and a long pleasant finish. An strawberries that are still a touch tart – but exquisite Methode Cap Classique! deliciously so. Lovely ruby grapefruit and lime zest flavour balancing the berries. The wine is rounded, fleshy and long with a zippy, well- defined finish.

The unique location of Durbanville Hills’ cellar a mere 20 minutes from Cape Town’s city centre, offers not only a spectacular view of Table Mountain and Table Bay, but also an extraordinary terroir that stabilises temperatures and eliminates extremes of heat and cold. Klein Constantia is custodian to some of the most historic vineyards in South Africa and, indeed, the world. The unique location, climate and soils of our estate call for the making of terroir-driven wines, and it is to this principle that we are deeply committed.
Tasting Notes: Bright and yellow gold in colour. The nose displays aromas of citrus, ginger and fresh nutmeg. Elegant, well rounded in acidity with a creamy mouthfeel, the flavours follow through offering a zesty mid palate. Full and refreshing, the wine concludes with a long and concentrated finish.
Maturation: The wine was aged in a combination of 50 % new French oak, Hungarian oak and French Acacia. It was left for a period of 3 years in barrel on the gross lees before racking out and blending. It spent a further 6 months in tank before bottling.

Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region and confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines. The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships travelling the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town.

We wanted quality wine that offered excellent value and great packaging. Not exactly an epiphany, perhaps, but enough to motivate us into action. Of course, first we had to come up with a name. Mont du Toit labels symbolize its location and history. The mountain silhouette is that of the Hawequa Mountain, the French names honour our Huguenot forebears and the Khoi figure on the Hawequas label recalls our bond with Africa and its sun. It all began in 1791; a journey of discovery with the love of winemaking at heart. Philippus Wolvaart, a man of courage and vision, bought the farm that lay between the Berg and Palmiet rivers for 5600 guilder. Hand in hand with his wife, Margaretha, they nurtured the land and built a strong foundation on which the success of Nederburg was to flourish.

In 1984 Neil Ellis sourced grapes from vineyards not of his own and produced wine in rented cellar space. These grapes were sourced in the Stellenbosch district and meant a lot of nosing around the restrictive quota system prevalent at the time. His vision, the pursuit of quality, extended out of the cellar and into the vineyards where varieties would excel and best express a particular style of wine reflective of their environment.
