The global vitiviniculture sector is undergoing systemic and thorough changes. Spain occupies a privileged position in the global industry, ranking first in surface area, third in production and second in export volume. In recent years, domestic consumption has experienced a clear and pronounced decline, as observed in France and Italy. Therefore, exportation has become the main commercial avenue for table and quality wine. In Spain, designated quality wine represents 50% of total production and has experienced commercial dynamics in international markets that differ from those affecting table wine. The object of this paper is to analyze the factors influencing the competitiveness of quality wine, represented by designations of origin, in international markets. After defining a competitiveness index, adapted from the Balassa index, and using environmental and internal variables, three panel data models of the most representative Designations were specified for the 2000/2001 to 2009/2010 seasons. The results demonstrated that environmental variables were more influential in explaining the weak international competitive positioning of the poorer performing Designations. European regulations resulting from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the economic crisis were significant and influential in this respect. -

As a family owned and managed wine estate, and one of the first in the Stellenbosch region, we are immensely proud of our heritage that goes back as far as 1688 - the date our forefather, French Huguenot Jacques Malan, arrived in the Cape. Since then, our family involvement in the Western Cape wine industry ranges from planting some of the first vineyards in the Stellenbosch region to pioneering MCC in South Africa. The Malan family name is irrevocably associated with the establishment of a South African wine culture and continues to play a major role in the country’s vinous pursuits. This rich legacy is reflected in the bold use of the Malan family crest and the date 1688 that has been emblazoned directly onto the bottle. To further emphasise the importance of heritage to the Simonsig brand, a vivid red crest adorns the label, while high quality, slightly off-white paper with a serrated edge and clean typeface contributes to the classic yet contemporary feel. . -

Most likely, it's a refreshing sipper, perfect on a warm afternoon, not very serious, and priced accordingly. The old paradigm went that way, but things have changed. Recognizing a market for high-end domestic whites that go beyond chardonnay, California wineries have been increasingly releasing sauvignon blancs that bring heavyweight intent to a lightweight grape. Here, three fresh small-batch releases that exemplify the sauvignon blanc upgrade - and all produced for different Golden State wineries by the steady hand of freelance vintner and sauvignon blanc savior Philippe Melka, singled out by the New York Times for "making some of Napa's most influential wines." With their multiple flavor levels, these wines make you rethink what sauvignon blanc can be and take the grape into a pleasantly complex realm. 29 Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Vineyard 29 St. Helena, Calif. Even though wine grapes have ourished in Lodi since the later part of the 19th Century, it is oen thought of as a "new up-and-coming discovery" in California wines. Old Vine Zinfandel (and they are really old with some vines dating to the 1880s) represents the largest portion of vineyard land in the AVA. But more than 100 varietals are planted in Lodi's 100,000+ vineyard acres - most with Old World ancestry from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal etc. ere are countless soil types and microclimates throughout the area that encourage extensive exploration and experimentation on the part of progressive and courageous growers. Estreicher Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-1051, USA Vitis vinifera was first planted in South Africa by the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. The first wine farms, in which the French Huguenots participated – were land grants given by another Dutchman, Simon Van der Stel. He also established (for himself) the Constantia estate. The Constantia wine later became one of the most celebrated wines in the world. The decline of the South African wine industry in the late 1800’s was caused by the combination of natural disasters (mildew, phylloxera) and the consequences of wars and political events in Europe. Despite the reorganization imposed by the KWV cooperative, recovery was slow because of the embargo against the Apartheid regime. Since the 1990s, a large number of new wineries – often, small family operations – have been created. South African wines are now available in many markets. Some of these wines can compete with the best in the world. Stefan K. Estreicher received his PhD in Physics from the University of Zürich. He is currently Paul Whitfield Horn Professor in the Physics Department at Texas Tech University. His biography can be found at http://jupiter.phys.ttu.edu/stefanke. One of his hobbies is the history of wine. He published ‘A Brief History of Wine in Spain’ (European Review 21 (2), 209-239, 2013) and ‘Wine, from Neolithic Times to the 21st Century’ (Algora, New York, 2006).
