Open Linguistics 2017; 3: 396–418 Research Article Gianfilippo Terribili* Dēnkard III Language Variation and the Defence of Socio-Religious Identity in the Context of Early-Islamic Iran https://doi.org/10.1515/opli-2017-0020 Received January 25, 2017; accepted August 10, 2017 Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to illustrate as a case study, the linguistic and stylistic peculiarities characterizing the third book of the Dēnkard, one of the most authoritative texts in Zoroastrian Pahlavi literature (9th-10 th CE). The analysis will consider these features as part of a coherent system, styled to serve the dialectic strategies pursued by the Zoroastrian high priests in response to the pressures their own community was facing in the early Islamic period. In order to provide a more comprehensive overview on DkIII language distinctiveness, the research will underline the outward/inward dynamics, addressing both the relation of this theological dialectic with the surrounding socio-cultural environment and the leading- role claims of a group within a politically subordinated community. Keywords: Middle Persian, Pahlavi Literature, Iranian Philology 1 Introduction In tune with the present volume, seeking to integrate linguistic data concerning a specific text within the socio-cultural dynamics of the period in which a specific textual production flourished, may yield extremely interesting elements for scholars aiming to survey the development of broader acculturation processes. Within Iranian history, the early Islamic period offers a very rich field of investigation for sociolinguistic studies; the abundance of sources in our possession is in fact due to the activity of the multifaceted constituents of that society, while the presence of various and interacting agents offers a remarkable opportunity to adopt multiple point of views. -

On the 10 precepts of Jam having beautiful flocks to mankind and the 10 (precepts) which established, against those precepts, Dahag, the diminisher of creation. From the exposition of the good religion. |had asn-xradzahag dam sud |weh den passand dadar kam. 10 i andarz i huramag Jam |o mardom. Now (here is) an emanation of the innate wisdom, an advantage of the creature, an object receiving the approbation of the good religion, a will of the creator. (That is) the 10 precepts of Jam having beautiful flocks to mankind. ek dadar i gehan [menidan] amurnjenidarih <i> gehan menidan guftan padis ostigan |estadan. (1) One (is) to think, say (and) stand steadfast in it that the creator of the world is not the injurer of the world. ud ek |dew |pad |tis abadih |ne yastan. (2) And one (is) not to worship dew(s) on account of whatever prosperity (of the world). ek dad mayan <mardoman>mehenidan ostigan ddstan. Review of Translation of “Šahrestānīhā Ī Ērānšahr, a Middle Persian Text on Late Antique Geography, Epic and History I
Critical Studies in Texts & Programs of Human Sciences, Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies (IHCS) Monthly Journal, Vol. 21, No. 1, Spring 2021, 23-40 Review of Translation of “Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr, A Middle Persian Text on Late Antique Geography, Epic and History” in Persian Shima Jaafari Dehaghi* Abstract Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr is a Middle Persian treatise about the historical geography of Sasanian cities in Iran. So far, this treatise has been translated and published in Persian by Hedayat, Oriyan, Taffazoli, and Daryaee. In 2002, Daryaee published this text with Persian and English translation, and in 2009, Jalilian translated Daryaee’s book into Persian. In the present study, we examined Jalilian’s translation of this treatise. It is noteworthy that Jalilian mentioned in his book that the translation of the Middle Persian text is from Daryaee himself. To make the review more accurate and to compare it with other translations, Daryaee and Taffazoli’s translations are cited and compared. First, the transliteration of each sentence is mentioned, and then the translation is written in chronological order. Then, the review of the translations is mentioned. It can be concluded that each of the translations of Middle Persian texts into Persian has new points that, in turn, will help us to better understand Middle Persian texts and ancient Iranian thought. Last updated Mar 2, 2021. 1 Foreword The Denkard is a ninth century encyclopedia of the Zoroastrian religion, but with extensive quotes from materials thousands of years older, including (otherwise) lost Avestan texts. It is the single most valuable source of information on this religion aside from the Avesta. This volume contains detailed contents of the Gathic Nasks of the Ancient Canon, much of which is now lost in the original Avesta. Note however, that (as Dr. West says) “it is abundantly clear to the practised translator that Avesta phrases often underlie the Pahlavi passages which seem to be quoted at length from the original Nasks, especially in Dk. 9; but, for some of the details mentioned, there may be no older authority than a Pahlavi commentary, and this should be ever borne in mind by the sceptical critic in search of anachronisms.” I have added some comments in {} and [[]], mainly to facilitate searches. Spelling of technical terms have also been normalized to conform with other texts in this series. Wherever possible I have used the spellings of F.M. Kotwal and J. Boyd, A Guide to the Zoroastrian Religion, Scholars Press, 1982. The original S.B.E. volumes used a system of transliteration which was misleading to the casual reader, and no longer adopted. As an example “chinwad” (bridge) (Kotwal and Boyd) was transliterated in S.B.E. -

17 Zoroastrianism This statement was prepared by the Athravan Education Trust and Zoroastrian Studies, the two main academic bodies responsible to the Zoroastrian faith for theological developments and study. Whoever teaches care for all these seven creations, does well and pleases the Bounteous Immortals; then his soul will never arrive at kinship with the Hostile Spirit. When he has cared for the creations, the care of these Bounteous Immortals is for him, and he must teach this to all mankind in the material world. —Shayasht ne Shayast (15:6)1 These actions, according to Zoroastrianism, will lead toward “making the world wonderful,” when the world will be restored to a perfect state. In this state the material world will never grow old, never die, never decay, will be ever living and ever increasing and master of its wish. The dead will rise, life and immortality will come, and the world will be restored to a perfect state in accordance with the Will of Ahura Mazda (Lord of Wisdom). The role of humanity in the world is to serve and honor not just the Wise Lord but the Seven Bounteous Creations of the sky, water, earth, plants, animals, man, and fire—gifts of God on High to humanity on earth. The great strength of the Zoroastrian faith is that it enjoins the caring of the physical world not merely to seek spiritual salvation, but because 1. Weekly Zoroastrian Scripture Extract # 195 – A Daily Gatha Prayer of 16 verses based on Ahura Mazda's advice to Zarathushtra to drive away evil - Vendidad 11.1 - 2 Hello all Tele Class friends: A Daily Gatha Prayer – A Suggestion: In our WZSEs #192 – 194, we discussed the question by Zarathushtra answered by Ahura Mazda for the prayers to be recited to ward of evil from a dead body (Vendidad 11.1 – 2). There are 16 verses instructed by Ahura Mazda. We suggest that these verses from Gathas can also be used as a Daily Gatha Prayer for all to recite. In this WZSE #195, we present this prayer. I apologize for the length of this WZSE. Hope you enjoy reading and listening and following up as a prayer. And would like to hear your thoughts. Background: Our Vakhshur-e-Vakhshuraan Zarathushtra Spitamaan, in his Gathas, asks many questions to Ahura Mazda, but Ahura Mazda never replies him; instead Zarathushtra figures out the answers by using his Vohu Mana, the Good Mind! Later Avestan writers of Vendidad, Yashts, etc. thought this mode of questions and answers between Zarathushtra and Ahura Mazda, can be a powerful way to expound their own interpretations of our religion but in their questions by Zarathushtra, Ahura Mazda answers them right away! This gave their interpretations a powerful support! We see such questions and answers all over Vendidad, Yashts, etc.. Age of Vendidad has been debated in literature for a long time. It could be between 300 to 800 BC or earlier. According to Dinkard, our religion had 21 Nasks (volumes) on various subjects. -

Prayer is good for the people of the world - Sarosh Yasht Haadokht - Karda 1 - Verses 1 - 3 Hello all Tele Class friends: Sarosh (Sraosha) Yasht Haadokht and Sarosh Yasht Vadi Sarosh Yazata is a very important Zarathushtri Angel associated with mankind and is usually referred to as his/her conscience. He safeguards him/her against demons especially during nights. He accompanies the soul of a person after death for three days and nights and accompany it on the fourth dawn to Chinvat Bridge for his/her judgement together with Mithra and Rashne Yazatas. Sarosh Yazata has two Yashts (Yasht 11 and 11a and Yasna 57) dedicated to him – Sarosh Yasht Haadokht and Sarosh Yasht Vadi (longer). Sarosh Yasht Haadokht can be recited anytime but not in Rapithwan Geh; whereas, Sarosh Yasht Vadi is recited in Aiwisruthrem Geh. Zarathushtra mentions Sarosh in his Gathas many times together with Ameshaa Spentaas. “In the Gathas, Sraosha's primary function is to propagate conscience and the beauty of life, secondly the religion of Ahura Mazda to humanity, as Sraosha himself learned it from Ahura Mazda.
