Maria Macuch and Iranian Studies
Maria Macuch and Iranian Studies Almut Hintze Maria Macuch is the daughter of the semitist Rudolf Macuch and Iran- dokht Shaghaghi.1 Her parents met during the years 1945−1947 when students in Paris, where Rudolf studied Arabic and Semitic languages, and Irandokht Hygiene at the Faculty of Medicine. Soon after their marriage on 31 March 1949 in Bratislava they transferred to Iran, and Maria was born in 1 January 1950 in Tehran, where she spent the first six years of her life. In 1956 Rudolf Macuch received an invitation from Lady Drower to work with her on the Mandaic Dictionary at the Oriental Institute in Oxford and the family moved there in October of the same year. Maria remembers this trip as the most exciting journey of her life, travelling by train from Tehran via Turkey across the European continent and a stormy English channel (Macuch 2008 a, p. 13). In Oxford Maria went to the SS Philip and James’ Church of England Primary School, and her mother converted to Christianity. Life in Oxford has made an abiding impression on Maria, and she never misses an opportunity to visit the city where she spent two very happy years of her childhood. After Rudolf Macuch’s fellowship had come to an end, and since life in Iran seemed undesirable for a Christian convert, the small family moved to Windsor, Canada in 1958 and Maria’s father took up the position of a vicar. His dream of a uni- versity career eventually came true when he was invited to the Chair of Semitic and Arabic Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. -
Press Release the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation
Press Release The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Limited April 3, 2020 Ratings Facilities Amount Rating1 Rating Action (Rs. crore) Long term Bank Facilities 7.11 CARE AA; Stable Reaffirmed (Double A; Outlook: Stable) Long term Bank Facilities 49.00 CARE AA; Stable Reaffirmed (enhanced from 29.00) (Double A; Outlook: Stable) Short-term Bank Facilities 1.00 CARE A1+ Reaffirmed (A One Plus) Total 57.11 (Rs. Fifty Seven Crore and Eleven Lakhs only) Details of instruments/facilities in Annexure-1 Detailed Rationale & Key Rating Drivers The reaffirmation of ratings assigned to the bank facilities of The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Limited (BBTCL) continues to derive strength from it being one of the holding company of Wadia Group. BBTCL has equity investments in group companies like Britannia Industries Limited (BIL) and The Bombay Dyeing & Manufacturing Company Limited (BMCL) that have significant market value. The rating also factors in the reputed and well-established promoter group, its presence in diversified businesses, expected monetization of real estate assets towards reduction of debt and issuance of NCDs to refinance its existing term loan facilities. However, these rating strengths continue to be partially offset by moderation in operational performance resulting in moderate financial risk profile in FY19 (refers to period April 01, to March 31,) and 9MFY20 (April 01 to December 31). Any large debt fund capital expenditure impacting financial risk profile of the company, dilution of stake in BIL, ability to recover the inter-corporate deposits (ICDs) from its group companies in a timely manner and delay in monetization of real estate assets would be key rating sensitivities. -

Denkard Book 9
DENKARD, Book 9 Details of Nasks 1-3, 21 (The Original Gathic Texts) Translated by Edward William West From Sacred Books of the East, Oxford University Press, 1897. Digitized and converted to HTML 1997 Joseph H. Peterson, avesta.org. Last updated Mar 2, 2021. 1 Foreword The Denkard is a ninth century encyclopedia of the Zoroastrian religion, but with extensive quotes from materials thousands of years older, including (otherwise) lost Avestan texts. It is the single most valuable source of information on this religion aside from the Avesta. This volume contains detailed contents of the Gathic Nasks of the Ancient Canon, much of which is now lost in the original Avesta. Note however, that (as Dr. West says) “it is abundantly clear to the practised translator that Avesta phrases often underlie the Pahlavi passages which seem to be quoted at length from the original Nasks, especially in Dk. 9; but, for some of the details mentioned, there may be no older authority than a Pahlavi commentary, and this should be ever borne in mind by the sceptical critic in search of anachronisms.” I have added some comments in {} and [[]], mainly to facilitate searches. Spelling of technical terms have also been normalized to conform with other texts in this series. Wherever possible I have used the spellings of F.M. Kotwal and J. Boyd, A Guide to the Zoroastrian Religion, Scholars Press, 1982. The original S.B.E. volumes used a system of transliteration which was misleading to the casual reader, and no longer adopted. As an example “chinwad” (bridge) (Kotwal and Boyd) was transliterated in S.B.E. -

Koosan Fire Temple in the Heart of Tabarestan Mountains
The Forgotten Ancient Fire Temples of Iran. Compiled by Phil Masters Koosan Fire Temple in the heart of Tabarestan mountains Aftab Yazdani: Koosan (or Toosan) Fire Temple in Behshahr, is one of the countless fire temples remaining from the Sassanian era. Zahireddin has called it Koosan in his book, where he says: “The son of Qobad built a fire temple in that place.” Based on notes from Ebn Esfandiar, on this fire temple a military camp was built by the Arabs. However, the discovery of ancient relics and a whole lot of coins from the Sassanian era proves the value and importance that this place had for the Sassanians. This fire Temple is situated 4 km on the west of Behshahr. Enb Esfandiar has written about this fire temple and says that: “Firooz Shah, and possibly the Sassanian Firooz has visited this Fire Temple.” This Fire Temple is on the southwest of Assiabesar Village, on top of a small mountain, and has been registered in the national heritage list under No. 5410. The structure is 8.5 X 8.5 m in size. It is built of stone and mortar (plaster of lime and ash or sand) and the outside surface of the walls have been built with stones laid orderly with geometrical pattern, and the walls have been filled with shavings and earth. Behshahr is a city on the east of Mazandaran province. Kouhestan Village is 6 km on the west of Behshahr district. The old name of Kouhestan was Koosan and its age is estimated to go back to the pre-Islamic period. -
A Daily Gatha Prayer
Weekly Zoroastrian Scripture Extract # 195 – A Daily Gatha Prayer of 16 verses based on Ahura Mazda's advice to Zarathushtra to drive away evil - Vendidad 11.1 - 2 Hello all Tele Class friends: A Daily Gatha Prayer – A Suggestion: In our WZSEs #192 – 194, we discussed the question by Zarathushtra answered by Ahura Mazda for the prayers to be recited to ward of evil from a dead body (Vendidad 11.1 – 2). There are 16 verses instructed by Ahura Mazda. We suggest that these verses from Gathas can also be used as a Daily Gatha Prayer for all to recite. In this WZSE #195, we present this prayer. I apologize for the length of this WZSE. Hope you enjoy reading and listening and following up as a prayer. And would like to hear your thoughts. Background: Our Vakhshur-e-Vakhshuraan Zarathushtra Spitamaan, in his Gathas, asks many questions to Ahura Mazda, but Ahura Mazda never replies him; instead Zarathushtra figures out the answers by using his Vohu Mana, the Good Mind! Later Avestan writers of Vendidad, Yashts, etc. thought this mode of questions and answers between Zarathushtra and Ahura Mazda, can be a powerful way to expound their own interpretations of our religion but in their questions by Zarathushtra, Ahura Mazda answers them right away! This gave their interpretations a powerful support! We see such questions and answers all over Vendidad, Yashts, etc.. Age of Vendidad has been debated in literature for a long time. It could be between 300 to 800 BC or earlier. According to Dinkard, our religion had 21 Nasks (volumes) on various subjects. -
Ritual and Ritual Text in the Zoroastrian Tradition: the Extent of Yasna
Ritual and ritual text in the Zoroastrian tradition: The extent of Yasna ARASH ZEINI Abstract This article examines the extent of the concluding section (Y ) of the Yasna Haptaŋhaitī in light of the manuscript evidence and the section’s divergent reception in a Middle Persian text known as the “Supplementary Texts to the Šayest̄ ne ̄Šayest̄ ” (Suppl.ŠnŠ). This investigation will entertain the pos- sibility of an alternative ritual being described in the Suppl.ŠnŠ. Moreover, it argues that the manuscripts transmit the ritual text along with certain variations and repetitions while the descriptions of the extent of each section preserve the necessary boundaries of the text as a textual composition or unit. Keywords: Zoroastrianism; Yasna; Avestan; Middle Persian; Rituals The five Gaϑ̄as̄and the Yasna Haptaŋhaitī (“Yasna in seven sections”) constitute the core of the Old Avestan (OAv.) sections of the Yasna (Y), a Zoroastrian ritual text commonly divided into haitī (“section, chapter”) and at the centre of many Zoroastrian rituals.1 As Cantera recounts, Scholars have long debated the structure of the Old Avestan texts, examining the age of the divisions of the Gaϑ̄as̄into haitī.2 In that same article, Cantera questions whether the Yasna Haptaŋhaitī (YH) originally consisted of seven haitī, arguing that despite its name the Yasna Haptaŋhaitī“was not originally divided into seven chapters”.3 1The yaϑāahūvairiiō(Y .) and airiiaman išiia (Y .) are also composed in Old Avestan. In my view, these constitute together with the yeŋhé̄hatām̨and the asˇə̣m vohūmoveable sections of the Zoroastrian ritual texts. Out of convenience, I refer to these sections as prayers. -
