Last updated Mar 2, 2021. 1 Foreword The Denkard is a ninth century encyclopedia of the Zoroastrian religion, but with extensive quotes from materials thousands of years older, including (otherwise) lost Avestan texts. It is the single most valuable source of information on this religion aside from the Avesta. This volume contains detailed contents of the Gathic Nasks of the Ancient Canon, much of which is now lost in the original Avesta. Note however, that (as Dr. West says) “it is abundantly clear to the practised translator that Avesta phrases often underlie the Pahlavi passages which seem to be quoted at length from the original Nasks, especially in Dk. 9; but, for some of the details mentioned, there may be no older authority than a Pahlavi commentary, and this should be ever borne in mind by the sceptical critic in search of anachronisms.” I have added some comments in {} and [[]], mainly to facilitate searches. Spelling of technical terms have also been normalized to conform with other texts in this series. Wherever possible I have used the spellings of F.M. Kotwal and J. Boyd, A Guide to the Zoroastrian Religion, Scholars Press, 1982. The original S.B.E. volumes used a system of transliteration which was misleading to the casual reader, and no longer adopted. As an example “chinwad” (bridge) (Kotwal and Boyd) was transliterated in S.B.E. as “Kînvad.” -J.H.     On the Good Faith Zoroastrianism is ascribed to the teachings of the legendary prophet Zarathustra and originated in ancient times. It was developed within the area populated by the Iranian peoples, and following the Arab conquest, it formed into a diaspora. In modern Russia it has evolved since the end of the Soviet era. It has become an attractive object of cultural produc- tion due to its association with Oriental philosophies and religions and its rearticulation since the modern era in Europe. The lasting appeal of Zoroastrianism evidenced by centuries of book pub- lishing in Russia was enlivened in the 1990s. A new, religious, and even occult dimension was introduced with the appearance of neo-Zoroastrian groups with their own publications and online websites (dedicated to Zoroastrianism). This study focuses on the intersectional relationships and topical analysis of different Zoroastrian themes in modern Russia. PROCOPIUS of Csesarea writes in that book of his history of the wars which deals with the Persian campaigns: But as time went on Kobad became more high-handed in the administration of the government, and introduced innovations into the constitution, among which was the law which he promulgated providing that Persians should have communal intercourse with their women, a measure which by no means pleased the common people. Accordingly they rose against him, removed him from the throne, and kept him in prison in chains.^ In so writing Procopius not only lives up to his reputed fond- ness for strange tales, but also shows how partial historians can distort history by telling only a part of the truth. The "law" referred to by Procopius was the doctrine of Mazdak, and it is our great misfortune that, as Reynold Nicholson has remarked,- none but hostile accounts survive of this interesting reformer. First among the annahsts of these events were the Greeks, remote in time and place, and willing, in view of the in- tense Grseco-Persian rivalry of the sixth and seventh centuries, to exemplify so easily the rottenness of the Persian rule. Cedrenus Georgius tells the incident thus: Moreover Kobad the last son of Perozes began to use the kingdom very badly, a law even being promulgated which com- manded that wives should be common to all.     Part Six: Yasna Haptanghaiti 35.2 and 3. This revised version simply corrects a spelling error. My apologies. Yasna Haptanghaiti 35. 2 and 3 The Yasna Haptanghaiti is not a part of the Gathas. Nor do we know who its author(s) may have been. The form in which it has come down to us in surviving manuscripts, is generally in Gathic Avestan, (with some additions in later forms of the Avestan language).1 So it would be reasonable to conclude that (except for the later Avestan parts) it was composed closer in time to Zarathushtra than other Avestan texts. And indeed, some parts of the Yasna Haptanghaiti are very close to his thought. This is true of the entire first chapter of the Yasna Haptanghaiti (YHapt. 35), but also of other parts. The opening paragraph (YHapt 35.1) is in archaic YAv. and therefore would have been added much later (some additional details are footnoted).2 But it also is quite beautiful and accurately reflects Zarathushtra's thought. It reads as follows. 'The truth--possessing Lord Wisdom, (having) the judgment of truth,3 we celebrate; The beneficial non--mortal (ones), good--ruling, good--giving, we celebrate; The truth--possessing existence of all (things), we celebrate -- belonging to the existences of mind, and physical life -- praiseworthy (because) of good truth, praiseworthy (because) of the good envisionment of wisdom-- worship." YHapt. 35.1. There are no capital letters in Av. script, and I take last word -- the name of the religion -- with double entendre, meaning the worship of wisdom, and the worship of the Existence that is Wisdom personified.

This research deals with the reason of the delay in the advent of Sufism in Azerbaijan compared with other regions in a descriptive analytic method. Studies show that the deficiency of conqueror Arabs, loyalty of ethnic people to Iranian religion and the influence of theosophical beliefs such as heart's eye, meeting the right, relation between body and soul and cross evidences in heart had important effects on ideas and thoughts of Azerbaijan's first Sufis such as Ebn-e-Yazdanyar. Investigating Arab victories and conducting case studies on early Sufis' thoughts and ideas, the author attains considerable results via this research.     Weekly Zoroastrian Scripture Extract # 195 – A Daily Gatha Prayer of 16 verses based on Ahura Mazda's advice to Zarathushtra to drive away evil - Vendidad 11.1 - 2 Hello all Tele Class friends: A Daily Gatha Prayer – A Suggestion: In our WZSEs #192 – 194, we discussed the question by Zarathushtra answered by Ahura Mazda for the prayers to be recited to ward of evil from a dead body (Vendidad 11.1 – 2). There are 16 verses instructed by Ahura Mazda. We suggest that these verses from Gathas can also be used as a Daily Gatha Prayer for all to recite. In this WZSE #195, we present this prayer. I apologize for the length of this WZSE. Hope you enjoy reading and listening and following up as a prayer. And would like to hear your thoughts. Background: Our Vakhshur-e-Vakhshuraan Zarathushtra Spitamaan, in his Gathas, asks many questions to Ahura Mazda, but Ahura Mazda never replies him; instead Zarathushtra figures out the answers by using his Vohu Mana, the Good Mind! Later Avestan writers of Vendidad, Yashts, etc. thought this mode of questions and answers between Zarathushtra and Ahura Mazda, can be a powerful way to expound their own interpretations of our religion but in their questions by Zarathushtra, Ahura Mazda answers them right away! This gave their interpretations a powerful support! We see such questions and answers all over Vendidad, Yashts, etc.. Age of Vendidad has been debated in literature for a long time. It could be between 300 to 800 BC or earlier. According to Dinkard, our religion had 21 Nasks (volumes) on various subjects.

    Weekly Zoroastrian Scripture Extract # 343: Oh Zarathushtra! Prayer is good for the people of the world - Sarosh Yasht Haadokht - Karda 1 - Verses 1 - 3 Hello all Tele Class friends: Sarosh (Sraosha) Yasht Haadokht and Sarosh Yasht Vadi Sarosh Yazata is a very important Zarathushtri Angel associated with mankind and is usually referred to as his/her conscience. He safeguards him/her against demons especially during nights. He accompanies the soul of a person after death for three days and nights and accompany it on the fourth dawn to Chinvat Bridge for his/her judgement together with Mithra and Rashne Yazatas. Sarosh Yazata has two Yashts (Yasht 11 and 11a and Yasna 57) dedicated to him – Sarosh Yasht Haadokht and Sarosh Yasht Vadi (longer). Sarosh Yasht Haadokht can be recited anytime but not in Rapithwan Geh; whereas, Sarosh Yasht Vadi is recited in Aiwisruthrem Geh. Zarathushtra mentions Sarosh in his Gathas many times together with Ameshaa Spentaas. “In the Gathas, Sraosha's primary function is to propagate conscience and the beauty of life, secondly the religion of Ahura Mazda to humanity, as Sraosha himself learned it from Ahura Mazda.
