The Life and Times of Mingyur Peldrön: Female Leadership in 18th Century Tibetan Buddhism Alison Joyce Melnick Ann Arbor, Michigan B.A., University of Michigan, 2003 M.A., University of Virginia, 2008 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Religious Studies University of Virginia August, 2014 ii © Copyright by Alison Joyce Melnick All Rights Reserved August 2014 iii Abstract This dissertation examines the life of the Tibetan nun Mingyur Peldrön (mi 'gyur dpal sgron, 1699-1769) through her hagiography, which was written by her disciple Gyurmé Ösel ('gyur med 'od gsal, b. 1715), and completed some thirteen years after her death. It is one of few hagiographies written about a Tibetan woman before the modern era, and offers insight into the lives of eighteenth century Central Tibetan religious women. The work considers the relationship between members of the Mindröling community and the governing leadership in Lhasa, and offers an example of how hagiographic narrative can be interpreted historically. The questions driving the project are: Who was Mingyur Peldrön, and why did she warrant a 200-folio hagiography? What was her role in her religious community, and the wider Tibetan world? What do her hagiographer's literary decisions tell us about his own time and place, his goals in writing the hagiography, and the developing literary styles of the time? What do they tell us about religious practice during this period of Tibetan history, and the role of women within that history? How was Mingyur Peldrön remembered in terms of her engagement with the wider religious community, how was she perceived by her followers, and what impact did she have on religious practice for the next generation? Finally, how and where is it possible to "hear" Mingyur Peldrön's voice in this work? This project engages several types of research methodology, including historiography, semiology, and methods for reading hagiography as history. -

I AN iNTRODUCTION TO MUSIC TO DELIGHT ALL THE SAGES, THE MEDICAL HISTORY OF DRAKKAR TASO TRULKU CHOKYI WANGCRUK (1775-1837)’ STACEY VAN VLEET, Columbia University On the auspicious occasion of theft 50th anniversary celebration, the Dharamsala Men-tsee-khang published a previously unavailable manuscript entitled A Briefly Stated framework ofInstructions for the Glorious field of Medicine: Music to Delight All the Sages.2 Part of the genre associated with polemics on the origin and development of medicine (khog ‘bubs or khog ‘bugs), this text — hereafter referred to as Music to Delight All the Sages — was written between 1816-17 in Kyirong by Drakkar Taso Truilcu Chokyi Wangchuk (1775-1837). Since available medical history texts are rare, this one represents a new source of great interest documenting the dynamism of Tibetan medicine between the 1 $th and early 19th centuries, a lesser-known period in the history of medicine in Tibet. Music to Delight All the Sages presents a historical argument concerned with reconciling the author’s various received medical lineages and traditions. ~ Biographies of Dzogchen Masters ~ Jigme Lingpa: A Guide to His Works It is hard to overstate the importance of Jigme Lingpa to the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. This itinerant yogi, along with Rongzom Mahapandita, Longchenpa, and-later-Mipham Rinpoche, are like four pillars of the tradition. He is considered the incarnation of both the great master Vimalamitra and the Dharma king Trisong Detsen. After becoming a monk, he had a vision of Mañjuśrīmitra which caused him to change his monks robes for the white shawl and long hair of a yogi. In his late twenties, he began a long retreat during which he experienced visions and discovered termas. A subsequent retreat a few years later was the container for multiple visions of Longchenpa, the result of which was the Longchen Nyingthig tradition of terma texts, sadhanas, prayers, and instructions. What many consider the best source for understanding Jigme Lingpa's relevance, and his milieu is Tulku Thondup Rinpoche's Masters of Meditation and Miracles: Lives of the Great Buddhist Masters of India and Tibet. While the biographical coverage of him only comprises about 18 pages, this work provides the clearest scope of the overall world of Jigme Lingpa, his line of incarnations, and the tradition and branches of teachings that stem from him. Here is Tulku Thondup Rinpoche's account of his revelation of the Longchen Nyingtik. "At twenty-eight, he discovered the extraordinary revelation of the Longchen Nyingthig cycle, the teachings of the Dharmakāya and Guru Rinpoche, as mind ter. In the evening of the twenty-fifth day of the tenth month of the Fire Ox year of the thirteenth Rabjung cycle (1757), he went to bed with an unbearable devotion to Guru Rinpoche in his heart; a stream of tears of sadness continuously wet his face because he was not 1 in Guru Rinpoche's presence, and unceasing words of prayers kept singing in his breath. -

The Eight Manifestations of Padmasambhava This is a special offering for everyone: a magnificent and in some ways cross-culturally seminal discourse on the Eight Manifestations of Padmasambhava , given by the late Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche, in May 1992, at Padma Gochen Ling, in Monterey, Tennessee. You don’t have to bow to the Buddha, you don’t have to burn butter lamps nor do you have to do any kind of ritual. This ancient tradition is simply concerned to awaken people to who and how they actually are and through that, to experience a feeling of ease, of being at home in their own skin, and in the world as it is… …By relaxing into the natural state the busy turbulence of life is revealed as the energy of that natural state. The turbulence does not stop; there is still energy going on, there is power, there are all sorts of things moving but now we understand where it all comes from and we see that we are always – always and already – participants in it. This is a river we can’t step out of but by relaxing in the natural condition we find a better way to swim and by swimming with ease and grace we can encourage other people to stop doing doggy paddle and learn something a little bit more elegant… …In the Tibetan tradition tantra and dzogchen get rather mixed in together. For example, people go to get initiations with the idea that some big powerful person can give them something, can give them the experience of their own true nature. -

Garab Dorje’s Essential points in three statements WITH JAMES LOW BRIGHTON, 31 JAN – 1 ST FEB 2009 Excerpts ….Dzogchen means the great perfection, the absolute simplicity of our situation. Although there are many improvements that could be made there is nothing to improve. This is the paradox. This tradition comes from the Buddha Samantabhadra. Samantabhadra means ‘always good’ or ‘always already good’. That is to say, the basis of our experience is a presence, an awareness, which is already shining and clear. Within that clarity many different forms of experience arise, some of which are not so clear. The clarity of the mind reveals the dullness of some of the contents of the mind. …The first point of Garab Dorje is to simply be in your own situation. Sometimes it is explained as seeing yourself or seeing your own nature. In Tibetan this word for nature is ngo wo which also means face. It impossible to see your own face; you can see a reflection of your face in a mirror and other people always see your face but you yourself cannot see your own face. Therefore, when we say, seeing your own face or in the Zen tradition they talk about seeing your original face, it means finding the way to see the thing that can’t be seen. …Garab Dorje’s second point is: not to remain in doubt. This means not to inhabit a state of confusion that lingers. In particular that means having got some experience of the open nature of the mind and how the energy moves, we often feel a need to correct our experience, to prepare ourselves more or to try to find a way of developing ourselves in a better way. -

Throughout its history, some of the greatest masters of their time have been born within the Mindrolling lineage including the unique lineage of female masters known as the Jetsunma line, a remarkable Mindrolling tradition.
