In this case, the fi rst thing we need to understand is our condition, because there is a rea- son why people are interested in the teaching. When they do not have any problems and they are enjoying themselves then they have no need for teaching or practice. But life is not like that, especially in the human condition.     ~ Biographies of Dzogchen Masters ~ Jigme Lingpa: A Guide to His Works It is hard to overstate the importance of Jigme Lingpa to the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. This itinerant yogi, along with Rongzom Mahapandita, Longchenpa, and-later-Mipham Rinpoche, are like four pillars of the tradition. He is considered the incarnation of both the great master Vimalamitra and the Dharma king Trisong Detsen. After becoming a monk, he had a vision of Mañjuśrīmitra which caused him to change his monks robes for the white shawl and long hair of a yogi. In his late twenties, he began a long retreat during which he experienced visions and discovered termas. A subsequent retreat a few years later was the ​ ​ container for multiple visions of Longchenpa, the result of which was the Longchen Nyingthig tradition of terma texts, sadhanas, prayers, and instructions. What many consider the best source for understanding Jigme Lingpa's relevance, and his milieu is Tulku Thondup Rinpoche's Masters of ​ Meditation and Miracles: Lives of the Great Buddhist Masters of India and Tibet. While the biographical coverage of him only comprises ​ about 18 pages, this work provides the clearest scope of the overall world of Jigme Lingpa, his line of incarnations, and the tradition and branches of teachings that stem from him. Here is Tulku Thondup Rinpoche's account of his revelation of the Longchen Nyingtik. ​ ​ "At twenty-eight, he discovered the extraordinary revelation of the Longchen Nyingthig cycle, the teachings of the Dharmakāya ​ and Guru Rinpoche, as mind ter. The turbulence does not stop; there is still energy going on, there is power, there are all sorts of things moving but now we understand where it all comes from and we see that we are always – always and already – participants in it. This is a river we can’t step out of but by relaxing in the natural condition we find a better way to swim and by swimming with ease and grace we can encourage other people to stop doing doggy paddle and learn something a little bit more elegant… …In the Tibetan tradition tantra and dzogchen get rather mixed in together. For example, people go to get initiations with the idea that some big powerful person can give them something, can give them the experience of their own true nature.

    Garab Dorje’s Essential points in three statements WITH JAMES LOW BRIGHTON, 31 JAN – 1 ST FEB 2009 Excerpts ….Dzogchen means the great perfection, the absolute simplicity of our situation. Although there are many improvements that could be made there is nothing to improve. This is the paradox. This tradition comes from the Buddha Samantabhadra. Samantabhadra means ‘always good’ or ‘always already good’. That is to say, the basis of our experience is a presence, an awareness, which is already shining and clear. Within that clarity many different forms of experience arise, some of which are not so clear. The clarity of the mind reveals the dullness of some of the contents of the mind. …The first point of Garab Dorje is to simply be in your own situation. Sometimes it is explained as seeing yourself or seeing your own nature. In Tibetan this word for nature is ngo wo which also means face. It impossible to see your own face; you can see a reflection of your face in a mirror and other people always see your face but you yourself cannot see your own face. Therefore, when we say, seeing your own face or in the Zen tradition they talk about seeing your original face, it means finding the way to see the thing that can’t be seen. …Garab Dorje’s second point is: not to remain in doubt. This means not to inhabit a state of confusion that lingers. In particular that means having got some experience of the open nature of the mind and how the energy moves, we often feel a need to correct our experience, to prepare ourselves more or to try to find a way of developing ourselves in a better way.

    128 GuruyoGa anniversaries of Padmasambhava and adzom druGPa Now I will explain how we do the practice on the day of Guru Padmasambhava and the day of Adzom Drugpa. On both days we do it in the same way. First you do the same as on the day of Guru Garab Dorje. You do purification breathing, then you visualize the white A, your primordial state, and thigle, and then you do purification with the mantra of the elements. Then, sounding A, you visualize that from your white A lights radiate and communicate to all teach- ers, all enlightened beings, and particularly to the teacher from whom you now want to receive transmission. At this moment the teacher is manifesting like Guru Padmasambhava instead of Garab Dorje. Guru Padmasambhava can be visualized in dif- ferent forms. There are two different kinds of Padmasambhava: one is called Guru Nangsi Silnön, another is called Guru Dewa Chenpo. When we do Long Life practice, we visualize Guru Dewa Chenpo. On the anniversary of Adzom Drugpa we do the practice of Nangsi Silnön, and in the day of Guru Padmasambhava we do Guru Dewa Chenpo, so you need to know both of these manifes- tations of Guru Padmasambhava. You already know that in the real sense Guru Padmasambhava is your teacher. Guru Padmasambhava, as the union of all teach- ers and all three roots, Guru, Devas, and Dakinis, all enlightened beings, is very important in Dzogchen. We unify all and then we do refuge and bodhicitta. After refuge and bodhicitta, you use the seven-line invocation of Guru Padmasambhava.

    A Glimpse of the Great Perfection¹ David Paul Boaz The nature of mind is the unity of awareness and emptiness… The nature of mind is clear light. —Shakyamuni Buddha In order to lead living beings to understanding I taught all the different yanas… —Shakyamuni Buddha (Lankavatara Sutra) Dharma in a cold climate: the supreme teaching. In the ancient Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism the traditional Three Vehicles of Buddhahood—Hinayana/Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana are viewed as the nine vehicles to liberation/enlightenment. According to H. H. The Dalai Lama the first eight vehicles utilize our ordinary obstructed mind as the causal path to enlightenment and ultimately Buddhahood. Such renunciation and transformation takes many lifetimes. However, in the Fruitional Vehicle the mind itself is primordially pure and always already Buddha from the very beginning. This subtlest and most direct vehicle, the Ati Yoga of Dzoghen, the Great Perfection utilizes our already present dynamic intrinsic Primordial Awareness Wisdom as the path. This path is considered by most Buddhist masters to be the pinnacle of all of the Buddhist vehicles to liberation and may, under the most auspicious circumstances, be accomplished in a single lifetime. This wisdom is the “unchanging rigpa awareness” that is no other than Samantabhadra (Kuntazangpo), the primordial Dharmakaya (perfect body of truth, empty in essence and the very nature of mind) Adi Buddha who is our pristine fundamental original nature, our “innate mind of clear light,” primordially pure and utterly untainted by the karmic winds of conceptual thought and negative emotion (Longchen Rabjam 2007). This numinous luminous presence of vidya/rigpa awareness wisdom is inherently present in all human beings.

    Background Information about the Dzogchen Kunzang Zhitro - 100 Peaceful and Wrathful Deities (42 peaceful & 58 wrathful) empowerment Dzogchen is a supreme ancient natural spiritual tradition of the “primordial state” or natural condition of the universe. The lineage originates from Samantabhadra the primordial Buddha and was passed to Vajrasattva, Garab Dorje and Guru Padmasambhava. The meaning of the word Dzogchen is “total perfection” and refers to the inherent natural state of all beings, free from conditioning and limitation. This tradition has been passed on directly in an unbroken descent from master to student since its beginnings. Dzogchen Kunzang Zhitro text is from the 8th century. It was hidden by Guru Padmasambhava as a terma (treasure) at Samye Chimpu chorten in Tibet. In the 15th century Pema Lingpa found this treasure. He gave the empowerment and transmission blessing in public. Pema Lingpa had been to Zangdok Palri (Copper Coloured Mountain Heaven of Guru Padmasambhava) many times to receive empowerments and instruction in his lifetime. The empowerment is a strong blessing that is dharma-energy and dharma-wisdom, combined, and permission to practice. The blessing comes through an unbroken lineage that goes back to Padmasambhava, Garab Dorje Vajrasattva and Primordial Buddha Samantabhadra. We have two lineages: the long lineage and the short. The long lineage goes back to Second Buddha Guru Padmasambhava, Khandro Yeshe Tsogyal, Princess Pemasel and Drimed Ozer Longchenpa. The short one is Guru Padmasambhava and Pema Lingpa. This lineage comes from the visits of Pema Lingpa to Zangtok Palri.

In 1981, near Arcidosso in Tuscany (Italy), Master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche founded the first community or Gar of the International Dzogchen Community. He named it “Meri-gar”, the “Community of the Mountain-of-Fire”. In the 70s Chögyal Namkhai Norbu began to teach Dzogchen to his first students. Interest soon became widespread and having received invitations from all continents, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche began to travel and teach throughout the world. These last thirty years the Dzogchen Community has grown and now has thousands of members in over 40 countries and all continents. The main objective of the Community is to preserve and develop understanding of Dzogchen, as well as preserving Tibet's extraordinary cultural patrimony. The International Shang Shung Institute for Tibetan Studies was founded by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche with this aim and it was inaugurated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in 1990.
