Besides the main premises in Trento, the Museum manages a local network including the following sites: Alpine Botanic Garden and Terrazza delle Stelle delle Viote in Monte Bondone, Lake Dwelling Museum of Lake Ledro and Museum and Study Centres Network in Ledro Valley, Gianni Caproni Aviation Museum, Geologic Museum of the Dolomites in Predazzo, Lake Tovel Limnology Station, Ecological Monitoring Centre of the Udzungwa Mountains in Tanzania and other study centres in agreement with local authorities. The origins of the museum and its collections date back to the 19th century, in 1964 it became a functional public agency of the Autonomous Province of Trento under the name of Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali (Natural Science Museum of Trento), while in 2011 its name changed again to the present Museo delle Scienze (MuSe – Science Museum). At the moment there are plans to move the structure within 2013 to a new 19 thousand square metre building that was purposely designed and built to become an important centre of diffusion of scientific culture As far as acquired competencies are concerned, MuSe operates based on the following strategic goals: Raising awareness of the natural heritage and of the ethical commitment to nature and environment preservation; Understanding the relation between local and global, starting from environmental considerations; Encouraging an informal, playful, involved, interactive, “first person” approach to science and its technological applications; Raising awareness of the contributions of techno-scientific culture and its importance for contemporary societies; Directing towards scientific knowledge as a cast of mind and as a possible profession; Directing and encouraging techno-scientific study curricula and a vision of the European Community as a common reserve of knowledge, growth and social relations; Considering this context, MuSe reckons to express the following skills: Ability to produce naturalistic and environmental research at international level, with international cooperation; Ability to cooperate with the scientific research system in Trento region, contributing to the creation of a high qualification scientific research district; Operating within the international scientific research and museology networks Creation and management of a local agency network for the development and protection of the area; Planning, production and management of events involving the public in the debate of techno- scientific current topics; Promoting and implementing, together with the other museums in the province, a quality cultural cluster, that is interesting for residents and important for the tourist industry Analytical report on the activity of the three-year period 2009-2011 | 5 di 167 | Introduction Analytical report on the activity of the three-year period 2009-2011 | 6 di 167 | Analytical report 2009 ANALYTICAL REPORT 2009 Analytical report on the activity of the three-year period 2009-2011 | 7 di 167 | Analytical report 2009 THE MUSEUM IN NUMBERS 2009 Cultural activity No. 138.137 Total visitors, of which: 51.234 Trento site 24.676 Gianni Caproni Museum of Aeronautics 34.388 Pile-dwelling Museum of lake Ledro 6.506 Alpine Botanic Garden of Viotte 3.480 Star Terrace 1.656 Arco Arboretum 1.451 Predazzo Geology Museum 2.071 Lake Tovel Limnology Station 1.051 PNAB activity in Val Genova Human resources Total staff % Equivalent full time General staff 21% 22,13 Cultural mediation staff 51% 54,48 Research staff 28% 29,69 General staff 100% 106,30 No. 13 Temporary exhibitions AVATAR An experience in the virtual world 10/10/08 – 15/02/09 Tridentine Museum of Natural Sciences TRY FLYING Flight simulation 19/04/08 – 15/03/09 The Gianni Caproni Museum of Aeronautics THE POETICS OF FRAGMENTS Portraits of wild fauna in the works of ROBERTO Lemmi 20/02/09 – 19/04/09 Tridentine Museum of Natural Sciences Analytical report on the activity of the three-year period 2009-2011 | 8 di 167 | Analytical report 2009 ARTISTS’ MAPS 1059-2009 21/03/09 – 03/05/09 The Gianni Caproni Museum of Aeronautics LOVE CONTACT. Analytical report on the activity of the three-year period 2009-2011 | 10 di 167 | Prehistory RESEARCH COST CENTRE ANALYTICAL SHEETS PREHISTORY COST CENTRE Person in charge: Giampaolo Dalmeri Summary of activities During 2009 the Prehistory Division has concentrated on two important projects as part of its research, relating to the Palaeolithic human occupation of the Central Eastern Alps during periods of particular environmental and climatic change. Riparo Dalmeri and on the bank of the Palù Echen peat bog. When the climate was humid-temperate, over 13,000 years ago, Upper Palaeolithic human groups lived in the large rock shelter at Riparo Dalmeri, to the northern border of the Piana di Marcèsina (1240 mamsl) and left extraordinary evidence of life and hunting. In 2009, an anthropic trench structure (S3) was discovered, filled with numerous ibex horns with entire cranial parts and a large, round, hard painted stone. This site is recognised both nationally and internationally as one of the best conserved and most important, above all due to the findings connected to ritual and art. The excavation campaign was concluded in 2009, having officially begun in 1991 and continued for almost twenty years. The Palù Echen site, located on the Folgaria Plateau in central eastern Trentino, at 1250 mamsl, is still being excavated and studied. A detailed stratigraphic aerial study was carried out in order to better chronologically define the episode or episodes of Epigravettian occupation, connected to the history of the ancient lacustrine basin. A temporary territorial exhibition entitled ‘When we were Hunters' was held from 4 April to 27 September, in collaboration with the Municipality of Grigno, and focused attention on the Riparo Dalmeri. During 2009, the two permanent Prehistory Exhibition Rooms were refitted and a planning collaboration over the contents of the new 'Muse' Museum of science was begun.
