The first Junior Junkanoo Parade on Abaco will be held on Saturday, December Box Car Derby Entertains Hundreds 13, a 4 p.m. in Marsh Harbour. Twelve schools have been working on costumes, getting drums and cowbells together and practicing the dance steps. The parade will take place on Don MacKay Boulevard be- tween Lowe’s Pharmacy and the AID park- ing lot on Saturday afternoon and will be judged by a panel. Prizes and trophies will be presented. The event will be broadcast live by Radio Abaco. Competition is expected to be high among the schools. Various adults have been assisting the small schools in prepar- ing for this event. The Senior Junkanoo Parade will take place on Boxing Day, December 26, in Marsh Harbour and is expected to be an- other popular event. Until this year a na- tional competition was held yearly in Nassau for the seniors. It was basically Nassau groups which were prominent. These two events on Abaco along with similar events on all the major Family Islands will bring the interest in Junkanoo to a local level. Although Junkanoo in The Bahamas is usually a night event, Green Turtle Cay has Hope Town’s sixth Box Car Derby was held on November 28 on Big Hill. Guest rates at the club house are expected to exceed $1000 per night. The 550 acre site is on two miles of virgin beach nestled between two headlands. Offshore shoals to the south subdue sea swells giv- ing the 47 beach lots a preferred southerly exposure away from harsh winter winds and rough water. The beach is enclosed by prominent rocky headlands at each end giving focus to the white expanse of sand. A short ob- servation tower has been erected on the southwest prominence which gives a spec- tacular view. On the southeast end the club house will sit about 50 feet above the la- goon giving another commanding view. The pristine Winding Bay beach is fur- ther accentuated by daily cleaning of sea- weed and debris from end to end. The of- fending casuarina trees have been removed. In comparison the Treasure Cay beach is about twice as long but lacks the striking headlands at each end. The north side of the Abaco Club prop- erty is cut through by the roadway into Cherokee and is bordered by mangroves and the shallow marle wetlands of Yellow Wood Creek. This vast water area is a rich fisher- ies area and is presently used by the Chero- kee guides for bonefish clients. The type of tree they import is Fraser Fir as this is the most fragrant of fir trees and the type which holds up the best and so gives pleasure for the longest amount of time. These trees are grown in the mountains of North Carolina and, once cut, they are shipped to the Port of Palm Beach where they are placed in refrigerated containers to be shipped to Abaco. Mrs. Emily Key tells how one year the trees were cut during a snowstorm and the snow was still on them when they were packed for shipping. When she opened the containers here in Marsh Harbour the trees were very wet and it was amazing to real- ize that the water on those trees had actu- ally been snow a few days before in North Carolina. She said that sometimes when the trees are opened here they sometimes find oak leaves in the branches which is also really neat. A large shade shelter has been built at the nursery which is a great help in keeping the trees cool. About half the trees which are brought into Pinewoods each year have already been ordered by customers who often place their orders as early as August or September. This year their supplier, fortunately, was able to accommodate the increased order. Many customers, when ordering their tree, have definite requests as to exactly how they would like their tree to look. They may desire a short, bushy tree or they may pre- fer a tall skinny tree and the staff at Pin- ewoods do their best to accommodate their wishes. When the trees come in, a member of staff is assigned to match trees to cus- tomers. The trees are then tagged with the customer’s name. The majority of custom- ers are very pleased with their assigned tree. But should it not be exactly the dimensions they had in mind, they are at liberty to make another choice. Trees are also shipped to
