That’s phenomenon are so many women writer whose productive in writing poetry or fiction. Is this a suddenly phenomenon? There is a series moment that couldn’t ignored, because there were some women writers in the beginning of Indonesian literary history, especially in 1920- ies, a milestone in modern Indonesian literary history. The modern Indonesian literary history itself is impact of acculturation by western culture. This acculturation appears in Kartini herself, a woman writer who never mention in history about her literature activity. Limitation to women writers in the past often interrelated by the edge of their role, for example, they were: never categorized as qualified literature writer, or as a popular writer, or just a peripheral writer, not as a prominent writer in their generation of writer. Is installation of Ayu Utami as a pioneer in novel genre in Indonesian 2000 Generation of Literature as one strategy of contrary to what happen recently? Apparently, the emergent of women writers weren’t automatically had relation by feminism movement. The writer who had struggle for Kartini’s history is Pramoedya Ananta Toer, a man writer. Contemporary Literature from the Chinese Diaspora in Indonesia
CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE FROM THE CHINESE 'DIASPORA' IN INDONESIA Pamela Allen (University of Tasmania) Since the fall of Suharto a number of Chinese-Indonesian writers have begun to write as Chinese-Indonesians, some using their Chinese names, some writing in Mandarin. New literary activities include the gathering, publishing and translating (from Mandarin) of short stories and poetry by Chinese-Indonesians. Pribumi Indonesians too have privileged Chinese ethnicity in their works in new and compelling ways. To date little of this new Chinese-Indonesian literary activity has been documented or evaluated in English. This paper begins to fill that gap by examining the ways in which recent literary works by and about Chinese-Indonesians give expression to their ethnic identity. Introduction Since colonial times the Chinese have been subjected to othering in Indonesia on account of their cultural and religious difference, on account of their perceived dominance in the nation’s economy and (paradoxically, as this seems to contradict that economic - 1 - dominance) on account of their purported complicity with Communism. The first outbreak of racial violence towards the Chinese, engineered by the Dutch United East Indies Company, was in Batavia in 1740.1 The perceived hybridity of peranakan Chinese (those born in Indonesia) was encapsulated in the appellation used to describe them in pre-Independence Java: Cina wurung, londa durung, Jawa tanggung (‘no longer a Chinese, not yet a Dutchman, a half- baked Javanese’).2 ‘The Chinese are everywhere -
Makkunrai” Karya Lily Yulianti Farid
Prosiding The 5th International Conference on Indonesian Studies: “Ethnicity and Globalization” GENDER INEQUALITY DALAM ”MAKKUNRAI” KARYA LILY YULIANTI FARID Maria Josephine Mantik Fakultas Ilmu Pengetahuan Budaya, Universitas Indonesia [email protected] Abstrak Pemahaman akan konsep gender sangatlah diperlukan dalam menganalisis suatu masyarakat atau kelompok etnis. A. Pendahuluan Makkunrai. Perempuan. Pembahasan mengenai peran dan kedudukan perempuan seolah tidak ada habisnya. Meskipun Tuhan menciptakan makhluknya laki- laki dan perempuan dalam posisi yang sama, namun kenyataan berkata lain. -

Multimedia, Mobility and the Digital Southeast Asian Family a Two-Day Workshop 20-21 April 2017 Melbourne, Australia
Multimedia, Mobility and the Digital Southeast Asian Family A Two-Day Workshop 20-21 April 2017 Melbourne, Australia Funded by: . Migration and Mobilities Cluster, Transforming Human Societies Research Focus Area, La Trobe University, Australia . Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada . La Trobe Asia, La Trobe University, Australia . Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Program Southeast Asia is home to the largest number of social media users globally. Digital technology is shaping the way Southeast Asians interact, maintain contact, and express who they are, their family relationships. It is also a region known for its mobile population with high numbers of overseas workers, international students, refugees/asylum seekers, and migrants seeking permanent residency or citizenship in other countries. Online multimedia content is one way that migrants and mobile Southeast Asians express their sense of connectedness to their family members, belonging, multiple and varied identities, and cultural backgrounds. This two-day workshop of 13 presentations and 20 participants aims to provide a contemporary understanding of online multimedia expression of identity, belonging, and intergenerational family relationships of migrants and mobile subjects of Southeast Asian descent. What do these online multimedia production and stories tell us about the effects of migration and mobility on family intergenerational relationships, that of children, parents, grandparents, and extended kin networks? By focusing on online multimedia expression of Southeast Asians, we aim to comprehend social and cultural change in this region and beyond, that is shaped by digital technology, and particularly in relation to issues of identity, belonging and family relationships. In addition, we are interested in exploring the nuances of how technology shapes this process of change, including addressing a wider range of issues beyond connectedness such as power, conflict, and kinship relations. -

ABOUT THE FILM Lewat Djam Malam (After the Curfew) is a passionate work looking directly at a crucial moment of conflict in Indonesian history: the aftermath of the four-year Republican revolution which brought an end to Dutch rule. This is a visually and dramatically potent film about anger and disillusionment, about the dream of a new society cheapened and misshapen by government repression on the one hand and bourgeois complacency on the other. The film’s director, Usmar Ismail, is generally considered to be the father of Indonesian cinema, and his entire body of work was directly engaged with ongoing evolution of Indonesian society. -
Foreignization Or Domestication: the Ideology of Translating Balinese Cultural Words in Sukreni Gadis Bali Translated Into English
Foreignization or Domestication: The Ideology of Translating Balinese Cultural Words in Sukreni Gadis Bali Translated into English Ria Saraswati, Zuriyati, Ratna Dewanti Language Education, Postgraduate School Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Indonesia Keywords: Ideology in Translation, Domestication, Culture Abstract: Translation is an interesting part of applied linguistics. Translation converts messages from source language or Bahasa Sumber (Bsu) into the target language or Bahasa Sasaran (Bsa), for instance, translating Indonesian messages into English. In performing translation activities, translators often face a number of problems, one of which is problem regarding the cultural content or the cultural differences between Bsu and Bsa. In this case, translators are often put in a dilemmatic condition where they have to choose either to maintain the cultural content from Bsu or adapting the content to the Bsa. Related to the translators’ alignments on this matter, Venuti (1995) has proposed the concept of translation ideology. In regards to the role of ideology of translation, this research was carried out to describe the ideology of translation applied in the translation of a novel entitled Sukreni Gadis Bali. This qualitative research was conducted using the content analysis method which was not bounded by place. This research regarded linguistic data including words, phrases and utterances that contained the elements of Balinese culture found in the novel Sukreni Gadis Bali and an equivalent novel entitled The Rape of Sukreni. Data collection was administered to determine the unit of analysis in the form of linguistic units (words, phrases, and utterances), which contain cultural elements in Bsu and Bsa. The obtained data were then analyzed based on the translation ideology theory proposed by Venuti. -
