2 ASIAN VISUAL CULTURES Dirgantoro Feminisms and Contemporary Art in Indonesia Wulan Dirgantoro Feminisms and Contemporary Art in Indonesia Defining Experiences Feminisms and Contemporary Art in Indonesia Asian Visual Cultures This series focuses on visual cultures that are produced, distributed and consumed in Asia and by Asian communities worldwide. Visual cultures have been implicated in creative policies of the state and in global cultural networks (such as the art world, film festivals and the Internet), particularly since the emergence of digital technologies. Asia is home to some of the major film, television and video industries in the world, while Asian contemporary artists are selling their works for record prices at the international art markets. Visual communication and innovation is also thriving in transnational networks and communities at the grass-roots level. Asian Visual Cultures seeks to explore how the texts and contexts of Asian visual cultures shape, express and negotiate new forms of creativity, subjectivity and cultural politics. It specifically aims to probe into the political, commercial and digital contexts in which visual cultures emerge and circulate, and to trace the potential of these cultures for political or social critique. It welcomes scholarly monographs and edited volumes in English by both established and early-career researchers. COUNTRY STUDY A Hundred Years of Feminism in Indonesia An Analysis of Actors, Debates and Strategies IONAL Gadis Arivia and Nur Iman Subono REG A Hundred Years of Feminism in Indonesia An Analysis of Actors, Debates and Strategies Gadis Arivia and Nur Iman Subono This study deals with the rise of feminism in Indonesia which started a century ago. Feminism in Indonesia has a long history and has contributed to the discourse of equality as a critical project that brings social change. It is frequently accused as a proponent of western ideology or adopted from Western cultures; however, this study shows that Third World feminism stems from its own ideals and cultures. Although feminism has significantly progressed in Indonesia, there is still a strong rejection mainly among fundamentalist religious groups, conservatism and right wing populism. Gender, sexual orientation and religious minorities are confronted with discriminative laws and bylaws in various jurisdictions in Indonesia. Third World or Indonesian feminist scholarship should be supported to develop its own production, publication, distribution and consumption of ideas and be used as an analytical and strategic tool to develop its own gender knowledge and practices. Indonesian feminist scholarship can play a significant role in strengthening equality and gender justice in a conservative society or western hegemonic discourse. Interrogating the Feminine in Indonesian Modern and Contemporary Art Wulan Dirgantoro Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia, Volume 3, Number 1, March 2019, pp. 103-124 (Article) Published by NUS Press Pte Ltd DOI: https://doi.org/10.1353/sen.2019.0005 For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/721047 [ Access provided at 2 Oct 2021 12:17 GMT with no institutional affiliation ] Interrogating the Feminine in Indonesian Modern and Contemporary Art WULAN DIRGANTORO Abstract Despite feminism’s inclusion in the Indonesian art world lexicon in the 1990s, there are still obstacles till this day in finding a suitable or less problematic frame- work for analysing works by women artists. This paper proposes an alternative framework through which to re-imagine the Indonesian female body across generations in the works of some of Indonesia’s women artists such as Emiria Sunassa, IGAK Murniasih and Dita Gambiro. Indonesian writers and scholars have tried to some extent to reintroduce women artists and their works previously ignored by the male-dominated Indonesian art history. However, they often fail to address the deeper patriarchal structure that shaped the conditions. The core of this paper thus focuses on strategies of interrogation that aim to reveal not only women’s socio-historically specific forms of visual representation but also the patriarchal structure that surrounds them. “Tubuh perempuan ia tidak pernah memaknai, tetapi selalu dimaknai. Itu yang ingin aku rebut kembali” (Arahmaiani, 2003, pp. 172). [A woman never defines her own body but is always being defined by others.
