In Dying Days In Dying Days were one of the few bands in Quebec doing the really metallic style of hardcore which was big in Florida. They were often compared to Poison the Well and Morning Again, but personally I would compare them to This Day Forward. They would record a demo tape in 1998 after forming, with their original vocalist Olivier, and would build up a good following right away. They then switched vocalists and ended up with Mike Doucet. They recorded a second demo “To Forget Yesterday”, and would come in contact with James Hamilton who was working on his new record label, Re-Define Records. He decided to officially release the demo as their first ep. James decided to press a limited run of a single song from it on tape, to see if the product was marketable. Indeed it was because the ep would come out as the labels’ first output. The band band was then approached by Good Life Recordings, and would be featured on their VHS “Good Life T.V.” (which had Morning Again and As Friends Rust on it) as well as a compilation, which featured their song “Once Were Warriors”, from their debut ep. They would however sign a contract deal with One Day Savior instead. The band recorded some demos for their second ep, “Life as a Balancing Act” in 2002, which would be released by ODS. The year after, “After the Fire” would be released on the same label. Both would do really well for the band. They would also appear on the “True Until Death” compilation by United Edge Records. American Punk: The Relations between Punk Rock, Hardcore, and American Culture Gerfried Ambrosch ABSTRACT Punk culture has its roots on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite continuous cross-fertiliza- tion, the British and the American punk traditions exhibit distinct features. There are notable aesthetic and lyrical differences, for instance. The causes for these dissimilarities stem from the different cultural, social, and economic preconditions that gave rise to punk in these places in the mid-1970s. In the U. K., punk was mainly a movement of frustrated working-class youths who occupied London’s high-rise blocks and whose families’ livelihoods were threatened by a declin- ing economy and rising unemployment. Conversely, in America, punk emerged as a middle-class phenomenon and a reaction to feelings of social and cultural alienation in the context of suburban life. Even city slickers such as the Ramones, New York’s counterpart to London’s Sex Pistols and the United States’ first ‘official’ well-known punk rock group, made reference to the mythology of suburbia (not just as a place but as a state of mind, and an ideal, as well), advancing a subver- sive critique of American culture as a whole. Engaging critically with mainstream U.S. culture, American punk’s constitutive other, punk developed an alternative sense of Americanness. Since the mid-1970s, punk has produced a plethora of bands and sub-scenes all around the world. This phenomenon began almost simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic—in London and in New York, to be precise—and has since spread to the most remote corners of the world.

Intention Records Interview Intention Records was a really awesome independent record label from Florida that released some very well remembered records. Those bands include Morning Again, Culture, Reversal of Man, Holocron, Roosevelt and Afterall. The person to thank for documenting this piece of, mostly, Florida history and some of Canada’s, is Jonathan Phillips. All of Intention Records’ releases are long out of print and sold out, so no luck getting some left overs from Jon. Platform & Roosevelt Interview Editor’s Note: This interview was initially sent toTim Kirkpatrick, James Glayat and Chris Irving at the same time back in September of 2009. Each member responded with their own version of the story. Bellow the interview,Tim Shaner offered a retrospective view on Platform, Roosevelt and his other bands. This interview was initially conducted to be posted on a 90’s hardcore webzine (I don’t have to tell you which one, I’m sure you can guess which one it is) but they thought it was beneath them to publish it. So here it is on the Abridged Pause Blog instead! -Hey Tim, I was wondering if you would have some time to answer these few questions concerning Roosevelt? Tim: Wow! A Roosevelt interview 15 years after the fact. Sure, I’ll try and answer your questions as good as my memory serves me from that time. Platform demo, May 1993 -So Roosevelt formed in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in October 1994. How did the band come about? Had any of you guys played together in a band before? I’ve heard on forums that Roosevelt was connected to a band named Platform, any relation? Tim: Roosevelt was formed out of the ashes of like 10 other bands. Justin and Tim Shaner (brothers, guitar and vocals) and Chris Irving (bass) were in a band called Platform together. Platform broke up and those three formed Roosevelt with Chris’s brother Jeff Irving on drums. So the band was made up of 2 pairs of brothers at the beginning.

Extrém metal és hardcore szószedet A szószedet a blokkban előforduló, az extrém metalhoz és hardcore-hoz kapcsolódó fontosabb fogalmakhoz nyújt kiegészítő információt. Black metal A black metal műfaja a nyolcvanas években önállósult, első képviselői a brit Venom és a svéd Bathory voltak. Zeneileg a black metal többnyire a nagyon gyors – a színtéren belül is gyakran „varrógépszerűnek” hívott – dobütemekre játszott kásás hangzású gitárfüggönyökkel operál; mind a dob, mind a gitárok inkább a magasabb hangtartományra fókuszálnak, a telt, mély basszusok nem jellemzőek a stílusra. A black metal énekesek torok-vokáljának jellemzésére leggyakrabban a „károgás”, vagy „acsarkodás” kifejezéseket használják. A műfaj kétségkívül nem annyira zenei, hanem inkább radikális ideológiai elköteleződései miatt vonta magára több esetben a szélesebb nagyközönség fi gyelmét is, többek között például a sátánista eszmék propagálásával, mely a hírhedt norvégiai templomgyújtogatá- sokban és gyilkosságokban csúcsosodott ki a kilencvenes években. (www.goodnoise.com) to sell music from Ryko's catalog in the MPS format. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. The agreement will start with more than 175 songs from 50 Ryko artists, and additional tracks will be added in the coming months. The agreement's initial terms cover artists including Frank Zappa, Galaxie 500, Golden Smog, Louis Armstrong, Medeski Martin & Wood, Throwing Muses, Mickey Hart, Lead Belly, Morphine and Richard Thompson.
