  • The House Freedom Caucus: Extreme Faction Influence in the U.S
The House Freedom Caucus: Extreme Faction Influence in the U.S. Congress Andrew J. Clarke∗ Lafayette College Abstract While political observers frequently attribute influence to ideological factions, politi- cal scientists have paid relatively little attention to the emergence of highly organized, extreme, sub-party institutions. In the first systematic analysis of the House Free- dom Caucus, I argue that non-centrist factions embolden lawmakers to push back against their political party by offsetting leadership resources with faction support. As a result, extreme blocs in the House of Representatives can more effectively dis- tort the party brand. To test these claims, I analyze the impact of Freedom Caucus affiliation on changes in legislative behavior and member-to-member donation pat- terns. I find that Republican lawmakers become (1) more obstructionist and (2) less reliant on party leadership donations after joining the conservative faction. These findings suggest that Freedom Caucus institutions empower lawmakers to more ag- gressively anchor the Republican Conference to conservative policy positions by off- setting the informational and financial deficits imposed by party leaders. ∗Assistant Professor, Department of Government & Law. [email protected], http://www. andrewjclarke.net 0 In 2015, the highly organized and deeply secretive House Freedom Caucus formed in the U.S. Congress. Journalists credited the faction with overthrowing the Speaker of the House, hand-packing his successor, and pushing the House Republican Conference to adopt an increasingly extreme and aggressive posture with the Obama administration — all within a year. Shortly after, Republicans won unified control of the federal government, and the Freedom Caucus quickly reasserted its role a major player in legislative affairs.

Wesemann, Master of Arts Utah State University, 2019 Committee Chair: Randy Williams, MS Department: English Most people are familiar with the Enola Gay—the B-29 that dropped Little Boy, the first atomic bomb, over the city of Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Less known are the fifteen Silverplate B-29 airplanes that trained for the mission, that were named and later adorned with nose art. However, in recorded history, the atomic mission overshadowed the occupational folklore of this group. Because the abundance of planes were scrapped in the decade after World War II and most WWII veterans have passed on, all that remains of their occupational folklore are photographs, oral and written histories, some books, and two iconic airplanes in museum exhibits. Yet, the public’s infatuation and curiosity with nose art keeps the tradition alive. The purpose of my graduate project and internship with the Hill Aerospace Museum was to collaborate on a 60-foot exhibit that analyzes the humanizing aspects of the Silverplate B-29 nose art from the 509th Composite Group and show how nose art functioned in three ways.

  • Right of Reply in Reply to the Armenian Delegation Statement Which Was Full
Statement by the Delegation of Azerbaijan Human Dimension Implementation Meeting Working Session 13: Fundamental Freedoms I (freedom of movement) Warsaw, 27 September 2016 As delivered by Fidan Mahmudova Embassy of Azerbaijan to Poland Right of reply In reply to the Armenian delegation statement which was full of groundless accusations against my country, we wish to state that Armenia bears the responsibility for unleashing the war against Azerbaijan, by using force occupied twenty percent of Azerbaijan’s territories and carried out ethnic cleansing and committing other atrocious crimes. With regard to the 8-year old boy, who was travelling to Baku, we call on the Armenian delegate to end disseminating inaccurate information, as Luka was accompanied by his mother who did not possess travel permission for the child from his father which is required for individuals travelling under the age of 18 (the permission of both parents is required). Furthermore, Armenians and people of Armenian origin do not face any obstacles entering Azerbaijan. Thus, Armenian delegation participated in the First European Games held in Baku last year. In their interview Armenian sportsmen expressed their satisfaction with the participation. If there were any problems, they would have never participated in the next such kind of events. We also wish to state that last year the Armenian delegation took part in the chess competition which also was held in Baku in 2015. And finally, we’d like to remind the Armenian delegation that the Azerbaijani President personally awarded the sportsman of Armenian origin during 1st European Games in 2015 who won the second prize.

  • Onto the National Stage
Onto the National Stage congresswomen in an age of crises, 1935–1954 Thirty-six women entered Congress between 1935 and 1954, a tumultuous two decades that encompassed the Great Depression, World War II, and the start of the Cold War. Women participated in America’s survival, recovery, and ascent to world power in important and unprecedented ways; they became shapers of the welfare state, workers during wartime, and members of the military. During this time the nation’s capital took on increasing importance in the everyday lives of average Americans. The Great Depression and the specter of global war transformed the role of the federal government, making it a provider and protector. Like their male counterparts, women in Congress legislated to provide economic relief to their constituents, debated the merits of government intervention to cure the economy, argued about America’s role in world affairs, and grappled with challenges and opportunities during wartime. Distinct trends persisted from the pioneer generation of women in Congress. Second-generation women still made up only a small fraction of the total congres- sional membership. At their peak, 15 women served in the 83rd Congress Senators Joseph T. Robinson (far left) and Hattie W. Caraway of Arkansas at the June 1936 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at which President Franklin Roosevelt was nominated to a second term. Caraway was a supporter of the Roosevelt administration’s New Deal economic recovery programs, many of which benefited constituents in her agriculture-based state. image courtesy of the national archives and records administration (1953–1955)—about 2.8 percent.
