32 Ekam April 2020 Issue Photostory Angkor Wat The Biggest Religious Complex on Earth

By Swapan K. Bhattacharyya, DGM, Haridwar

Angkor Wat, is the largest Hindu temple complex ever built in the world spread over 402 acres. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

It was built by Khmer King Suryavarman II in early 12th century. The temple was dedicated to Lord Vishnu, but gradually transformed into Buddhist temple towards the end of 14th Century.

BHEL Monthly Newsletter 33 In later centuries when Buddhism became the dominant religion, the temple was eventually abandoned to the jungle.

The Bayon was built nearly 100 years after Angkor Wat. Also known as the ‘Face Temple’, having huge heads glare down from every angle. 54 towers each decorated with 4 gigantic faces. So a total of 216 smiling enormous faces.

Some say that the Khmer empire was divided into 54 provinces at the time of Bayon’s construction, hence the 54 towers, each having face in all direction, keeping watch on the kingdom’s activities

After the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 15th century, Ta Prohm was abandoned and left to nature for centuries.

34 Ekam April 2020 Issue When restoration of the temples started in the early 21st century, the archaeologists decided to leave the root-entangled temple as it was – engulfed by the jungle.

So, Ta Prohm has been left untouched except for the clearing of a path for visitors and structural strengthening to save from further deterioration.

Banyan, Fig, Silk-cotton tree and other trees spread their gigantic roots over stones, walls. Trunks of trees twist amongst stone pillars. Just amazing.

Hollywood movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was filmed at this location
