Novija istra`ivawa do- nose konkretnije podatke o srpskoj istoriji XIII veka. \or|a (\ur|evi stupovi u Rasu), na brdu iznad episkopske crkve, u prostorno i sadr`ajno simboli~nom odnosu. Danas znamo i mesto krunisawa:bilajetora{kasabornacrkva, hram Sv. apostola Petra i Pavla. Do izdavawa poznate @i~ke poveqe (oko 1224) vlast u srpskim zemqama se sticala i gubila u Rasu. Marta meseca 1220. godine u pismu papi Honoriju III Stefan Prvoven~ani sebe naziva krunisanim kraqem (rex coronatus).

However, any renewal results in major morphological, physiognomic, functional or social changes, which imply changes in the meanings encoded in space. These transformations are not always welcome and they may lead to public discussions and conflicts. Skopje 2014 is a project within which such controversial transformations have been taking place. The area surrounding the Vardar River and its banks plays a major role here. On the river banks monumental buildings were erected, bridges over the river were modernised and new ones, decorated with monuments, were built for pedestrians. Bridges can be considered a valuable component of any urban infrastructure as they link different parts of a settlement unit (in the case of Skopje – left (northern) bank and the right (southern) bank; Albanian and Macedonian), improve transport, facilitate trade and cultural exchange. In this context, referring to Lotman’s semiosphere theory, they may become borders of semiotic space, which acts as a filter that facilitates the penetration of codes and cultural texts. Yet, in multicultural Skopje meanings attached to bridges seem to lead to social inequalities as they glorify what is Macedonian and degrade the Albanian element.

The wake behind the mission of Cyril and Methodios: Byzantine echoes in the Chronicle of the Priest of Diokleia Dr Angeliki Papageorgiou Department of Slavic Studies/National and Kapodistrian University of Athens The Chronicle of the Priest of Diokleia is a controversial text of late fourteenth/early fifteenth century date, composed in two versions by a representative of the clergy in order to serve the political plans of his patron. It refers to the history of the Slavs, with particular emphasis on the Croats, from the end of the fifth to the middle of the twelfth century. Its author, Rüdiger, of possible Czech descent, belonged to the monastic order of the Cistercians. We do not know the year of his birth, but between the years 1295 and 1298 he lived in Split and belonged to the staff of the city’s Archbishopric. In 1299 he moved to Bar (Antibari), where he was elected archbishop. In 1301 he was forced to flee, after the city had been captured by the Serb ruler Stefan Milutin. He died in 1305 in Zwettl Abbey, Lower Austria1. 1 In the past there have been other opinions regarding the composition and authorship of the Chronicle; they are summarized in the following works: S. Ćirković, Istorija srpskog naroda (=History of the Serbs), Beograd 1994, here pp. 180-211, V. Ćorović, “Primedbe o Dukljaninovoj Hronic” (=Comments on the Chronicle of Diokleia), in B. • The Term Τρισκαταρατος in Byzantine and Serbian Medieval Literature
UDC: 821.163.1.0994 811.163.1’373.45:811.14 THE TERM ΤΡΙΣΚΑΤΑΡΑΤΟΣ Original scientifi c paper IN BYZANTINE AND SERBIAN MEDIEVAL Dragoljub MARJANOVIĆ Faculty of Philosophy, LITERATURE University of Belgrade Th e starting point of this paper is the account of a council against heretics which was held by the Serbian grand zhupan Stefan Nemanja in his dominions in the late 12th century Serbia. Later, in the fi rst half of the 13th century, Nemanja’s son and hagiographer, the fi rst crowned king Stefan Nemanjić utilized a specifi c technical term “thrice-accursed” (τρισκατάρατος – трьклет) in his account of the council that was convened. Our aim is to present the levels of cultural and literary traditions which were transmitted from various Byzantine literary genres, which stem from the attic oratory as far as the 4th century B.C. (Demosthenes’ Oration against Aristogeiton), through the literary works of the rhetor Lucian the Sophist in the second century A.D., and which later entered Byzantine tradition through pseudo-Chrysostomian works, and the liturgical and historiographical texts of authors such as Romanos Melodos, George the Monk, and Constantine Manasses. We aim to present both the development in the meaning of the term thrice-accursed in its long historical path from Demosthenes to Manasses, its shift from ancient pagan to Christian semantics and thus utilization in various genres of Byzantine literature, and fi nally its infl uence on the genre of Serbian medieval hagiography, especially in the works of Stefan the First-Crowned and archbishop Danilo II in his Lives of Serbian kings and archbishops.
