Tudor Place Manuscript Collection Britannia (Peter) Kennon Papers MS-7
Introduction
Britannia Wellington (Peter) Kennon (1815-1911) was one of five children of the builders of Tudor Place, Thomas (1769-1834) and Martha (Custis) Peter (1777-1854). She married Commodore Beverley Kennon (1893-1844) of the United States Navy in 1842; they had one daughter born in 1843. Commodore Beverley Kennon was killed in the explosion of the gun "Peacemaker" on board the U.S.S. Princeton in 1844. Britannia (Peter) Kennon returned with her daughter to live at Tudor Place; after the death of her mother Martha (Custis) Peter in 1854, she inherited the house and property. The Britannia (Peter) Kennon Papers include correspondence, subject files, legal documents, financial documents, and scrapbook material. The correspondence provides information about the history of the Peter family and includes an extensive correspondence of her daughter, Martha (Kennon) Peter. The subject files evidence Britannia (Peter) Kennon’s involvement in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Society of Colonial Dames, and other local societies. They also reveal details of the settlement of her husband’s estate, and her efforts to secure the title of Tudor Place for her heirs. Legal documents record the steps taken to divide the Washington collection of Tudor Place among her heirs. The financial documents provide a detailed account of household expenditures at Tudor Place for significant periods of her ownership, particularly 1872-1911. These papers were a part of the estate Armistead Peter placed under the auspices of the Carostead Foundation, Incorporated, in 1966; the name of the foundation was changed to Tudor Place Foundation, Incorporated, in 1987. Use and rights of the papers are controlled by the Foundation. The collection was processed and the register prepared by James Kaser, a project archivist hired through a National Historical Records and Publications grant in 1992. This document was reformatted by Emily Rusch and revised by Tudor Place archivist Wendy Kail in 2020.

Biographical Sketch
Britannia (Peter) Kennon (1815-1911) was born to Thomas Peter (1769-1834) and Martha (Custis) Peter (1777-1854) at Tudor Place. Because of her exceptionally long life she was a living link to the earliest days of the Peter family for her grandson, Armistead Peter, Jr. (1870-1960), and her great- grandson, Armistead Peter 3rd (1896-1983). Educated at Georgetown Visitation Convent, Britannia (Peter) Kennon married Commodore Beverley Kennon (1893-1844) in 1842; they had one child, Martha Custis Kennon (1843-1886), who was born at Tudor Place. The couple lived at the United States Navy Yard, which Commodore Beverley Kennon commanded as Chief of Bureau; he was killed in 1844 aboard the U.S.S Princeton along with a number of prominent government officials when the cannon “Peacemaker" exploded. After the death of her husband, Britannia (Peter) Kennon returned with her daughter to live at Tudor Place with her widowed mother. Upon her mother's death in 1854, she inherited the house and property. Between 1858 and 1862 Britannia (Peter) Kennon rented Tudor Place. She travelled North to visit her daughter who was in school. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, she travelled South; however, concerned that Tudor Place would be converted to a hospital in her absence, she returned to Georgetown. In order to prevent the requisitioning of her property, she opened the house to boarders, primarily Union officers, who were asked not to discuss the war in her presence. Her daughter, Martha Custis Kennon (1843-1886), married a cousin, Dr. Armistead Peter, M.D. (1840-1902), in 1867; they had five children. For a time the couple lived at Tudor Place where Dr. Armistead Peter had his office in the east wing. In 1881 they moved with their growing family to a house they built on O Street in Georgetown. Upon the death of her daughter Martha (Kennon) Peter in 1886, Britannia (Peter) Kennon played an important role in the lives of her five grandchildren and all of them lived at Tudor Place for extended periods of time. In addition to her family responsibilities and the maintenance of Tudor Place, she was involved in many service organizations: in Georgetown these included the Georgetown Orphan Asylum, the Aged Woman's Home, the Bible Society, the Benevolent Society, the Serving Society of St. John’s Church and the Serving Society of Christ Church, and honorary President of the Alumnae Association of the Georgetown Academy of the Visitation; in the District of Columbia she served in The Louise Home, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, and was a Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Britannia (Peter) Kennon worked to guarantee a satisfactory disposition of Tudor Place and the collection of family artifacts and Washington objects in the house upon her death. She took legal steps to perfect the title to the property and entered into legal agreements with her heirs. She wished all of her property divided equally among her five grandchildren. Accordingly, after her death in 1911 on the eve of her ninety-sixth birthday, the contents of Tudor Place were divided into five equal parts. Her grandson Armistead Peter, Jr., bought his siblings shares of Tudor Place, and become the third owner of the house and grounds.
