Director's Message

I’ll be completely upfront and say that when I heard NCCT was doing , I groaned and rolled my eyes. A musical version of Big Fish? Really? The movie is perfect as it is; leave it alone! But I decided to put my judgements aside and read the script. I was surprised by my reaction to it. There were parts that I had no idea how they could be done on stage (how do you shoot a man out of a canon?), but the challenge intrigued me. The script was a 123 page puzzle. When NCCT offered me the job I was thrilled for the opportunity to solve it.

Once the ball started rolling there were more puzzle pieces to be added to the mix. A lot of puzzle pieces. This included, but was definitely not limited to, hiring the production staff, running auditions and then having to choose out of the incredibly talented people who should be who, envisioning the set, creating a rehearsal schedule, making sure lines, music and blocking were learned, and, most importantly, having fun.

And we did have fun putting up this show, but it was a lot of hard work. This show digs very deep with its story about an ailing father, Edward, and his son, Will, trying to understand one another. Will sees the world in black and white while Edward sees it in full color. It soon leads to Edward’s last moments on earth where Will finally understands what his father was trying to teach him all along. Live in the moment, be present, and live big.

I hope this show taught the cast and production team this lesson. Life is too short to hold grudges, focus on the negative aspects in situations, and all that jazz. Live the life you want to live! That’s what I aspire to do after being introduced to this piece, and I hope you leave the show with that aspiration in mind as well.

There are so many people to thank. My amazing production team, Colby and Gabrielle, my cast, my family. I can’t imagine doing it with anyone else. This was a dream come true, and I hope you all had as much fun as I did.

Thank you for coming to see our show. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it for you. - Emma Rose Brooks

Emma Rose Brooks (Director): Upper Valley directorial debut! Various professional credits at Milwaukee Rep, New London Barn Playhouse, and Northern Stage. Proud AEA member. Many thanks to NCCT, my family, and Gabrielle and Colby. Dedicated to my father.

Gabrielle Confer (Choreographer): Gabrielle graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2017 with her BFA in Dance. She moved to New York City and was selected for the work/study program with Mark Morris Dance Group and also performed for The Ride NYC. She is excited to make her choreographic debut for NCCT with this talented cast and crew.

Colby Baker (Music Director): Colby is a high school choral director at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy in Northwood, NH. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and is currently completing his Master of Music in Music Education at the University of Florida. Outside of teaching, he is an active performer, regularly being hired as music director and collaborative pianist for various theatre productions, concerts, and recitals. He is also a baritone and sings with New Hampshire Master Chorale, a semi- professional choir based in Concord, NH. Finally, he is a commissioned composer, with an upcoming choral commission from a middle school in NH.

Cast Bios

Isabelle Ackerman (Featured Dancer): Isabelle is a rising junior at Lebanon High School. This is her first NCCT summer show, and in the past two years she has been involved with NCCT Teens and the Wet Paint Players. Isabelle is also a member of the NCCT Teen Board. Most recently, she played Margo in her school’s production of Bright Star. Isabelle would like to thank her family for their support.

Meredith Alvarez (Featured Ensemble): This is Meredith’s third production with NCCT, performing in Curtains and Big Fish as well as being the hair and makeup coordinator for Crazy for You. Meredith wants to thank her husband for all of his love and support, her daughter for joining her in this amazing production, and her friends and family for coming out to enjoy the show.

Jason Archambeault (Edward Bloom): Jason has been in numerous past NCCT productions, such as Beauty and the Beast (The Beast), Carousel (Enoch Snow), and Sweeney Todd (Beadle Bamford) to name a few. He is beyond delighted to once again share the stage with his wife Dawn. He is very thankful for the love and support from Dawn, his children (Mason, Ethan, and Cayden) and fur family, without whom performing each summer would not be possible.

Dawn Archambeault (Featured Ensemble): This is Dawn's 2nd time on stage with NCCT. She is a current NCCT Board member and had previously only worked behind the scenes before taking the stage for the first time in last year’s Curtains. She is excited to share the stage once again with her amazing husband, Jason, without his love and encouragement, she would never have found the courage to step on the stage. This year Dawn took on the additional challenge of costuming the show with her mother. Dawn sends endless love to her kids Cayden, Ethan, and Mason, who love and love and support her in spite of her madness! “Dad, I’ll slay the dragons ‘til you can..."

Katie Bucci (Jenny Hill): Katie is thrilled to be making her NCCT debut! She is also excited to return to Revels North this December as Celeste in Christmas Revels at LOH. Katie wishes to thank her family and friends for all their love and support!

Michelle Carlson (Josephine Bloom): Michelle is thrilled to be in her fourth NCCT production. You previously saw her in The Secret Garden, Beauty and the Beast, and Curtains. Michelle has also performed with Shaker Bridge Theater, Parish Players, and in the feature film Thrasher Road. Michelle loves reading and talking about stories with her 8th graders and teaching Zumba classes.

Andrew Carmichael (Don Price): Andrew is grateful to be in his second show with NCCT working alongside an amazing production team and talented cast. Thank you, community members for joining us in this spectacular spectacle and for supporting local theater. Bullying is never okay! stopbullying.gov

Emily Cheevers (Featured Dancer): Emily is a rising senior at Lebanon High School, and is so happy to be in her second NCCT summer show! She is a member of the NCCT teen board and is going into her fourth year of teen shows. She is grateful for the supportive members of her school drama department and the opportunity to play Amalia in She Loves Me this year. Many thanks to the amazing cast and creative team of this show!!

Cayla Cline (Featured Ensemble): Cayla is excited to be a part of the NCCT family again for Big Fish! She was Lady with a Cane/Ensemble in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Ronnie Driscoll/Ensemble in Curtains. Without the fierce love and support of her husband, family, and friends—none of this would be possible!

Tessa Cullen (Featured Dancer): Tessa's acting career started with NCCT in 2013 when she played Marta in The Sound of Music. Since then Tessa has worked on numerous productions with Northern Stage including James and the Giant Peach, The Drowsy Chaperone, Our Town, MacBeth, A Christmas Carol, White Christmas and Matilda. Tessa enjoys tap dancing, skiing, playing guitar and hanging out with her pet pig, Pickles.

Cordelia Durand (Featured Ensemble): This is Cordelia's first NCCT production. She is not a stranger to the stage though, you may have seen her as Lavender in Northern Stage's holiday musical Matilda. When not performing on stage she is busy with school, violin, sailing and snowboarding.

Amy Fortier (Sandra Bloom): This is Amy's 9th NCCT Summer show since discovering NCCT in 2008. She appeared most recently as Nikki in last year's Curtains. Favorite NCCT roles include Dickon in The Secret Garden, Nancy in Oliver! and of course Fork Leader in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Amy is a former President of NCCT and in her 8th year as a Teen Advisor to our Teen Program. In "real life" she is a personal trainer at the River Valley Club and an artist teaching "sip and paint" classes in her spare time (what's that?).

Austin Gleim (Featured Ensemble): This is Austin Gleim's fifth NCCT production. He has also been in one THT show and six Wet Paint Players performances. He is a junior Mechanical Engineering major with a math minor and a focus on programming at Clarkson University.

Emma Hadden (Featured Dancer): This is Emma’s third show with NCCT after appearing as a dancing knife in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and as Harv Fremont in Curtains. She’s enjoyed exploring her fabulously girly side in her roles for this show. She would like to thank her current and former students at RMS, for whom she performs every day, and her husband Jeff, without whom the cat would certainly starve.

Caitrin Hannay-Alvarez (Featured Ensemble): This is Caitrin’s first production with NCCT, but she has done multiple summer shows through theater camp with the Canaan Recreation Department. Caitrin is going into fifth grade at the Indian River School, and her favorite subjects are math and science. Caitrin wants to thank her father, mother, friends and family for their love and support.

Margaret Hunton (The Witch): Margaret Hunton is thrilled to be back on stage for her sixth NCCT production. Most recently she appeared as Georgia Hendricks in last summer's Curtains. She is also honored to have performed in the Upper Valley with ArtisTree, Northern Stage, Opera North, and Parish Players. She would like to thank the cast and crew of Big Fish for bringing magic to her summer.

Lydia Kennelly (Featured Ensemble): Lydia has graduated from third grade and enjoys singing, which is why she wanted to be in this production.

Ben Makalinaw (Zacky Price): Ben is excited to be back for his seventh show with NCCT. He was in five shows with the Teen Program and performed in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. He acted in three shows with Trumbull Hall Troupe and five shows at Mascoma High. During the day he puts makeup on and advises beauty at Sephora. During the night, he puts more makeup on and becomes a drag queen. "Hi I'm the chemical burn from the spiral perm, Trixie Mattel." -Trixie Mattel

Suzy Malerich (Featured Dancer): Usually ushering for NCCT, Suzy is pleased to be appearing on stage this time! Other recent local gigs include Producers, Fiddler on the Roof, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jungle Book, Charlotte’s Web, Juneberry concerts, and Moving Spirit dance events. With degrees in dance, therapeutic recreation, and nursing, and certification in massage and harp therapies, she has combined a passion for the arts with healthcare for years. Laughter is the BEST medicine! ENJOY!

Matthew McGinnis (Will Bloom): Matthew is excited to be involved in his first NCCT show! He is the new vocal music teacher at Indian River School in Canaan and has loved his first year there! Getting involved with NCCT has made him feel a stronger connection to the Upper Valley and he has loved meeting all of the new people. Matthew regularly performs in New Hampshire and Massachusetts as a church soloist, and freelance tenor vocalist. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Keene State College.

Ken Munsey (Dr. Bennett): Ken is one of the "founding" members of NCCT, having been involved in one way or another since it began. He taught music for the Lebanon Public Schools for 37 years, and was also involved in restoring the Theater at the Lebanon Opera House to be used for stage productions. His interest at LOH lead him to become Technical Director there for over thirty years. Ken is also active in the music community with Bel Canto Chamber Singers and the Upper Valley Singers.

Irene Pletcher (Young Will Bloom): Irene, a 5th grader, is delighted to be making her NCCT debut in Big Fish. Irene has performed in productions at Northern Stage (Matilda), Opera North (Madam Butterfly), Wet Paint Players (Bright Star) and with the Trillium Arts Theater Company (Pippi, Little Princess); and is a junior member of the 2019 New London Red Barn Theater Summer Company. In her free time, she loves writing and playing music. She would like to thank her family, friends, teachers, castmates and directors.

Mark Roux (Karl the Giant): Mark, a seasoned trombonist, is making his acting debut in this production! He has been playing in musical theater productions for more than 30 years including URI productions of Cabaret, Camelot, Peter Pan, and The Wizard of Oz. He continues to perform in church and community groups, including jazz, Dixieland, Swing, and other bands. He performed in the pit for NCCT’s The Secret Garden, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and Curtains and in Northern Stage’s Summer Musical Intensive programs The Drowsy Chaperone and James and the Giant Peach. He'd like to thank NCCT for giving him the chance to "stretch is acting legs!"

Sarah Sentman (Featured Dancer): This is Sarah's 5th NCCT show, and her 3rd summer show. She danced in the Dancers' Corner company for 13 years. She just completed her 2nd year at Emerson College, where she studies film production and choreographs for the Emerson Dance Company.

Megan Vallee (Featured Ensemble): This is Megan’s second NCCT production, previously performing as Chip in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She has also appeared in Little Mermaid, Jr. (Artistree, The Grange Theatre) and She Loves Me (LHS Wet Paint Players). She is entering 4th grade at Hanover Street School this fall. Megan is excited to be doing this show with her mom and wants to thank her dad and big brother, Ryan, for their love and laughter.

Stephanie Vallee (Featured Ensemble): Stephanie is excited to be part of the Big Fish family! This is her first ever performance so she has appreciated the support and kindness from this great cast and crew. Stephanie is also incredibly grateful for the love and relentless encouragement from her husband, Jason, and children, Ryan and Megan.

Barry Wenig (Amos Calloway): Barry is happy to be back on the NCCT stage, reuniting with old friends and making new ones. Barry likes to bring "the funny". Previous NCCT roles include Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Maurice in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Erika Wetzel (Featured Dancer): This is Erika's second NCCT summer show. When she's not performing on stage she's performing in front of her kindergartners, or baking, hiking, and enjoying a hot beverage. She's grateful for summer vacation and all those who have made this show such a fun experience!
