Big Fish Program Presents Its 47th Annual Summer Production July 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, & 20, 2019 Director: Emma Rose Brooks Book by JOHN AUGUST Music Director: Colby Baker Music by ANDREW LIPPA Choreographer: Gabrielle Confer Underwriting support provided by The Byrne Foundation, Granite Air Center, and Mascoma Savings Bank Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the Columbia Motion Picture written by John August Originally produced on Broadway by Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen and Stage Entertainment with Roy Furman, Broadway Across America/Rich Entertainment Group, John Domo, The Nederlander Organization and Edward Walson in association with CJ E&M, Dancing Elephant Productions, Parrothead Productions, Harvey Weinstein/Carole L. Haber, Peter May/Jim Fantaci, Ted Liebowitz/Joe Piacentile and Columbia Pictures. Big Fish is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials are supplied by Theatrical Rights Worldwide, 1180 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 640, New York, NY 10036. (866) 378-9758 www.theatricalrights.com Director's Message I’ll be completely upfront and say that when I heard NCCT was doing Big Fish, I groaned and rolled my eyes. A musical version of Big Fish? Really? The movie is perfect as it is; leave it alone! But I decided to put my judgements aside and read the script. I was surprised by my reaction to it. There were parts that I had no idea how they could be done on stage (how do you shoot a man out of a canon?), but the challenge intrigued me. The script was a 123 page puzzle. When NCCT offered me the job I was thrilled for the opportunity to solve it. Once the ball started rolling there were more puzzle pieces to be added to the mix. A lot of puzzle pieces. This included, but was definitely not limited to, hiring the production staff, running auditions and then having to choose out of the incredibly talented people who should be who, envisioning the set, creating a rehearsal schedule, making sure lines, music and blocking were learned, and, most importantly, having fun. And we did have fun putting up this show, but it was a lot of hard work. This show digs very deep with its story about an ailing father, Edward, and his son, Will, trying to understand one another. Will sees the world in black and white while Edward sees it in full color. It soon leads to Edward’s last moments on earth where Will finally understands what his father was trying to teach him all along. Live in the moment, be present, and live big. I hope this show taught the cast and production team this lesson. Life is too short to hold grudges, focus on the negative aspects in situations, and all that jazz. Live the life you want to live! That’s what I aspire to do after being introduced to this piece, and I hope you leave the show with that aspiration in mind as well. There are so many people to thank. My amazing production team, Colby and Gabrielle, my cast, my family. I can’t imagine doing it with anyone else. This was a dream come true, and I hope you all had as much fun as I did. Thank you for coming to see our show. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it for you. - Emma Rose Brooks Special Thank You: Underwriters The Byrne Foundation Granite Air Center Mascoma Bank Show Sponsors Lebanon Opera House Mason Marketing Show Angels Sponsors: Margaret Hunton Hypertherm HOPE Foundation Patrons Stanley Hunton Friends Emma Hadden, Wenig Family Supporters Luce West Family Production Staff Director……………………………………... • Big Fish Is a Celebration of a Lifetime
A Note from the Director Big Fish is a celebration of a lifetime. It could be any of us questioning our purpose, wondering if we will leave behind a legacy, or hoping that we have made an impact on the lives of those dearest to us. I know I ask myself this often. This story is a story of faith, love, forgivness, and closure. As we travel through our life’s journey we collect moments, memories, and objects. For Edward Bloom, these things come to life on our stage tongiht. The back wall of our set is a literal fishing net that has been metaphorically dragged through his lifetime. Many of us wonder sometimes what we carry in our nets in terms of joy, sorrow, mistakes and accomplishment. Whatever those things may be, shouldn’t we each take a lesson from Edward and live our life as the hero of our story. ~David Woodrow “Big Fish” BOOK BY JOHN AUGUST MUSIC AND LYRICS BY ANDREW LIPPA Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the Columbia Motion Picture written by John August Originally produced on Broadway by Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen and Stage Entertainment with Roy Furman, Broadway Across America/Rich Entertainment Group, John Domo, The Nederlander Organization and Edward Walson in association with CJ E&M, Dancing Elephant Productions, Parrothead Productions, Harvey Weinstein/Carole L. • Big Fish Questions
Big Fish Directed by Tim Burton Preparing for the Film 1. What type of relationship would you expect to develop between a father who is often away on business trips and his son who grew up without really knowing him? 2. What are various reactions family members may have when they continually hear a relative tell the same stories, especially if the tales seem exaggerated or fabricated? 3. If you have read the novel Big Fish, what are some challenges the director may have adapting the text to the screen? Reflecting on the Film 1. What is the story that Edward Bloom tells about the day his son William was born? How does Will react to it and why? What is the actual story that Dr. Bennet reveals about Will's birth at the end of the film and what is Dr. Bennet's view of it? 2. What special feature does the Witch have and how does it help to frame Edward Bloom's life story from early childhood through his death. 3. As Edward is leaving Ashton, the Witch whispers to him, "The biggest fish in the river gets that way by never being caught." What thematic influence does that wisdom have for Edward Bloom? For his son Will? 4. What does the word "Spectre" mean? What is the thematic significance of the town's name? 5. When William returns to visit his very ill father, he asks him, “show me who you are.” His father replies, “Your failing, not mine if you can’t see who I am.” Whose perception does the director seem to support and how can we be sure? 6.
