  • The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance
Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama.

Theatre Department Robsham Theater Arts Center 50 St. Thomas More Drive Chestnut Hill, MA 02467 617.552.4012 www.bc.edu/theatre Media Contact: Scott T. Cummings Chair, Boston College Theatre Department [email protected] 617.552.4012 For Immediate Release: “GREAT BIG STUFF” ONSTAGE AT BC Boston College Theatre Department to Present April 27 - May 1, 2011 Chestnut Hill, MA (April 13, 2011) – The Boston College Theatre Department and Robsham Theater Arts Center are proud to present the final production of the 2010-11 Season, the hit musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Adapted from the 1988 feature film comedy starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, the musical tells the story of two con artists battling head to head in an effort to swindle an heiress out of her riches. Featuring music and lyrics by David Yazbek (The Full Monty) and a book by Jeffrey Lane, the production will be performed April 27 – May 1, 2011 on the Robsham Main Stage as part of the 13th Annual Boston College Arts Festival. Set in the beautiful French Riviera, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels presents the battle of wits between Lawrence Jameson, a sophisticated veteran charlatan, and Freddy Benson, an aspiring huckster who wants to learn from the master (and give him a run for his money). Their challenge to see who can be the first to swindle Christine Colgate, a naive American soap heiress, out of $50,000 leads to a game of one-upmanship full of clever disguises and hilarious twists and turns. A supporting cast of vacationers, hotel workers, and wealthy socialites provide a series of song-and-dance numbers that add to merriment.

  • Big Fish Is a Celebration of a Lifetime
A Note from the Director Big Fish is a celebration of a lifetime. It could be any of us questioning our purpose, wondering if we will leave behind a legacy, or hoping that we have made an impact on the lives of those dearest to us. I know I ask myself this often. This story is a story of faith, love, forgivness, and closure. As we travel through our life’s journey we collect moments, memories, and objects. For Edward Bloom, these things come to life on our stage tongiht. The back wall of our set is a literal fishing net that has been metaphorically dragged through his lifetime. Many of us wonder sometimes what we carry in our nets in terms of joy, sorrow, mistakes and accomplishment. Whatever those things may be, shouldn’t we each take a lesson from Edward and live our life as the hero of our story. ~David Woodrow “Big Fish” BOOK BY JOHN AUGUST MUSIC AND LYRICS BY ANDREW LIPPA Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the Columbia Motion Picture written by John August Originally produced on Broadway by Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen and Stage Entertainment with Roy Furman, Broadway Across America/Rich Entertainment Group, John Domo, The Nederlander Organization and Edward Walson in association with CJ E&M, Dancing Elephant Productions, Parrothead Productions, Harvey Weinstein/Carole L.
