27 2015 League Educator Apple Awards®

The Broadway League has bestowed the League Educator Apple Award since 2003 to recognize administrators, school district heads and advocates from around the country for their commitment to arts education, and their work in collaboration with Broadway League member venues that present Touring Broadway shows. Through this award and other initiatives, The Broadway League encourages the ongoing development of theatre education programs around the country. These are this year’s three recipients:

Recipient: Cristina Gutierrez-Brewster, Community Program Manager Organization name: Academy Prep of Tampa, Tampa, FL Nominator: Straz Center for the Performing Arts Mrs. Gutierrez-Brewster is being recognized for her visionary leadership and her ability to unify all those she comes in contact with. The Straz Center worked closely with Mrs. Gutierrez-Brewster on their the Musical Project. She Cristina was able to assist with attaining student “buy-in” and parent support to make the Gutierrez-Brewster program a success. During this project, the students deconstructed some of the classic chord structure and rhythms, which included a “treasure hunt” for Motown influences in modern popular music. Mrs. Gutierrez-Brewster helped to make sure the students were prepared and had all the resources they needed. She made sure the students focused on the curriculum, but encouraged them to have fun and learn about themselves in the process. As a result of her dedication to the students and desire for them to learn, spin-off relationships in arts partnerships have also occurred.

Recipient: Rosa Rocha, Board President Organization name: Friends of Down Syndrome, Houston, TX Nominator: Theatre Under The Stars Rosa Rocha is Board President of the Friends of Down Syndrome, a non-profit organization serving the educational and vocational needs of adults with Down syndrome. She recognizes the benefits of arts engagement for individuals with disabilities. Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) collaborated with Rosa to bring the arts to her program. TUTS provided a choreographer to teach weekly dance classes to high school and college-aged students centered on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella in preparation for their attendance at a performance of the show at the Hobby Center and performance at their first annual fundraiser, Cinderella Ball. Their performance at Rosa Rocha the event was so successful that they were then invited to perform at a local conference on disability.

Recipient: Bradley Wingate, Academic Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts Organization name: Greenville County School District, Greenville, SC Nominator: Peace Center for the Performing Arts Bradley Wingate is passionate about keeping the arts a valued, core academic subject for all students in Greenville County Schools and has championed a district-wide focus for providing high-quality arts experiences for all students. He is a strong partner in collaboration, working very diligently to motivate educator participation in various programs at the Peace Center and throughout the community. With Bradley’s partnership, 85 arts educators in Greenville County participated in a 2014-2015 Bradley Wingate professional development initiative to engage directly with the touring Broadway productions of , Pippin and , and gain new perspective for their art area by experiencing real-world applications in the professional touring theatre industry.
