Programming, and the Theatre on BIG FISH BoHo Theatre creates bold theatre that challenges convention through innovative storytelling and creates a shared community of artists and patrons in which all members are moved through art to make thoughtful, well-examined, caring relationships the highest priority in their lives. And is it always meaningful to know the differ- ence? Welcome to BIG FISH, our final production of this 15th BoHo season. It’s a heartfelt “big fish” of a tale that themat- ically revolves around those questions. It’s the saga of a father with a penchant for spinning myths about his past and his adult son who prefers to hear a true account of his dad’s life as old age begins to take its toll. It’s about the lengths we go to feel important, to be remembered. It’s about par- enthood and faith, and the visceral connection you create when sharing a story. Some will contend it’s a love story, pure and simple. That’s part of it, but at its core, Big Fish is about the bond between parent and child. I adore this storytelling adventure, with a book by John August and one of my all- time favorite musical scores by Andrew Lippa, who also wrote the lyrics. BIG FISH has Chicago roots as it started here in the spring of 2013 before moving to Broad- way. It often is produced as a large-scale spectacle. While I appreciate grand theatri- cality, I felt an obligation to relate this story in a more earnest and rawer fashion, focusing on the father-son relationship, bringing the more intimate moments to life without losing the magic of that production I first fell in love with. I appreciate that BIG FISH is set in the Deep South and honors that region’s love of tall tales without exploiting Southern stereotypes. I enjoy that 12 actors bring a multitude of characters to vibrant life. I'm heartened that we close our season with a story whose conversation feels necessary in today’s reality. And, of course, I love our dream-team cast and crew. What are the lessons BIG FISH weaves? You will draw your own. But to me, they’re these: Don’t be scared to grow. Follow your own path. Never settle. Your first prop- er job will be really bad. Forgive the past. Everyone is immortal. I dare predict that BIG FISH will have you thinking about the stories and memo- ries you wish to pass on. It certainly has made me think about the legacy I wish to impart on my one-year-old daughter. Editor’s Note: The complete list of Non-Equity Jeff Awards nominees follows this release and is also available on-line in the News and Events section at www.jeffawards.org. Non-Equity Jeff Award Nominations Rescinded for The Hypocrites Additional Nominations Announced Saturday, April 25, 2015 - Chicago, IL. Early Friday, April 24, 2015, Sean Graney, who recently returned to Chicago to resume his post as Artistic Director of The Hypocrites, informed the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee that he just learned the theater company had been operating under an Equity CAT-N contract for the duration of the 2014-2015 Non-Equity season. Over the past year, requests for judging its productions were made to the Non-Equity Wing without the committee having knowledge of the company’s Equity status. The Jeff Committee was aware that two of the productions had Equity performers (as indicated in the program); however, the committee has now confirmed that these were not guest contracts. As such, the company’s productions are not eligible for consideration in the Non- Equity Wing, and all related Non-Equity Jeff Award nominations have been rescinded. The productions in question will be shifted to the Equity Wing for awards consideration during its current season, which commenced on August 1, 2014 and will end on July 30, 2015. A revised listing of nominees follows for the 2014-2015 Non-Equity Jeff Awards. 2015 NON-EQUITY JEFF AWARD NOMINEES PRODUCTION - PLAY "Exit Strategy" - Jackalope Theatre Company "The Jungle" - Oracle Productions "Men Should Weep" - Griffin Theatre Company "Monstrous Regiment" - Lifeline Theatre "Ruined" - Eclipse Theatre Company" PRODUCTION - MUSICAL "Assassins" - Kokandy Productions "The Full Monty" - Kokandy Productions "Jesus Christ Superstar" - Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre "Titanic" - Griffin Theatre Company "The Wild Party" - Bailiwick Chicago PRODUCTION - REVUE "Always..

  • Big Fish Is a Celebration of a Lifetime
A Note from the Director Big Fish is a celebration of a lifetime. It could be any of us questioning our purpose, wondering if we will leave behind a legacy, or hoping that we have made an impact on the lives of those dearest to us. I know I ask myself this often. This story is a story of faith, love, forgivness, and closure. As we travel through our life’s journey we collect moments, memories, and objects. For Edward Bloom, these things come to life on our stage tongiht. The back wall of our set is a literal fishing net that has been metaphorically dragged through his lifetime. Many of us wonder sometimes what we carry in our nets in terms of joy, sorrow, mistakes and accomplishment. Whatever those things may be, shouldn’t we each take a lesson from Edward and live our life as the hero of our story. ~David Woodrow “Big Fish” BOOK BY JOHN AUGUST MUSIC AND LYRICS BY ANDREW LIPPA Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the Columbia Motion Picture written by John August Originally produced on Broadway by Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen and Stage Entertainment with Roy Furman, Broadway Across America/Rich Entertainment Group, John Domo, The Nederlander Organization and Edward Walson in association with CJ E&M, Dancing Elephant Productions, Parrothead Productions, Harvey Weinstein/Carole L. BOHO THEATRE P.O. Box 409267, Chicago, IL, 60640 Office: (773) 791-2393 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Kaela Altman, Executive Director August 19, 2013 [email protected] BOHO THEATRE DELIVERS CHILLING 10TH SEASON OPENER WITH VERONICA’S ROOM CHICAGO—BoHo Theatre kicks off its milestone 10th season with Ira Levin’s horror thriller Veronica’s Room at the Heartland Studio in Rogers Park. Running September 27th through October 27th, the play is a rarely-produced work from the acclaimed author of the novels Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives, and A Kiss Before Dying, as well as Deathtrap, which holds the record for Broadway’s longest running mystery play. Veronica’s Room represents the Bohemian Pillar of Freedom in BoHo’s 2013/2014 Season. THE PLAY “[Ira Levin] is the Swiss watchmaker of the suspense novel… he makes what the rest of us do look like those five-dollar watches you can buy in the discount drugstores.” -Stephen King, Danse Macabre This intimate thriller explores the thin line between fantasy and reality, and the lengths one is willing to go to find absolution. Students Susan and Larry find themselves enticed to an old New England mansion by its elderly caretakers in order to meet Cissie, the sole surviving member of the mansion’s family. They insist that Susan bears a striking resemblance to Cissie’s long-dead sister, Veronica. If Susan will agree to briefly impersonate Veronica, they believe it will comfort the dementia-afflicted Cissie and allow her to die in peace. But what begins as a simple errand of mercy quickly spirals into a nightmare cycle of guilt, sacrifice, and murder.
