It feels so good to say that after a year on the road, carrying kit and arranging players to venture to all corners of London and beyond to practice and play the game we love. Finsbury Park, we will never take you for granted again. Since we've been gone, the members of the Finsbury Park Sports Partnership have worked incredibly hard in developing this facility into one befitting of all the teams and clubs that use it. With a new field, athletics track and field sports facilities, the stadium is becoming a beacon of competitive activity in north London. Today brings both the A and B team together for a double header of fixtures. The B team has seen significant development in the off season and promises to put together a strong campaign in 2017. Led by quarterback Chris Walker, who enjoyed a fantastic preseason, there are a number of players, new and old(er) that have been dedicated to improving their position in the league. Perhaps victims of their own success in recent years, the A team has seen a host of players leave London for European teams, last year's defensive player of the year, Jonell Pelie, and offensive captain, Charlie Joseph, headline a number of players who are now making waves in the top divisions of the continent. We wish them well and are proud of the success they have achieved, though we hope they will be back soon. Leadership positions have been filled from within, and young faces, many of whom have graduated from the Dynamic Sports Academy, also based here in Finsbury Park, have taken the reigns of leadership. Whatever the offseason circumstances, the challenge for both teams remains the same and there is still much work to be done. Today we welcome the Essex Spartans and London Warriors, and both promise to be great match-ups. Whether this is your first sight of American Football, or you are a friend of the Blitz, we hope you enjoy the matches. TPBF Meet The Visitors: The Essex Spartans The Essex Spartans have been in existence since, 1985 but were officially founded in 1998 by the late Tony Palmer following a merger between the Basildon Chiefs and Redbridge Fire. Previously playing in Basildon and then Hannakins Farm in Billericay until 2015, the Essex Spartans are now based at Thurrock Rugby Club in Grays. Headed up by former Spartan offensive lineman Head Coach Sean Benton and assistant HC Graeme Saint, the Spartans have gone through a significant period of transition in recent years and have enjoyed two victories from two games so far this season, beating newcomers the East Essex Sabres 14 - 20, before shutting out the Ipswich Cardinals 17 - 0. The club also has a thriving Academy programme for 13-18 year olds, the U17 aspect of which were last year's Divisional Champions and finished fourth in the country at their level. The Essex Spartans are thrilled to be back in London to face the Blitz B team today and wish every player a great game. Meet The Visitors: London Warriors The London Warriors were formed in 2007 as a senior team of the successful London Warriors youth team, who had won the British Youth American Football Association the previous two years running. After being accepted by the British American Football League as Affiliate Members, they arranged to play the two friendly matches required under BAFL regulations. In October 2007, the Warriors played home and away games against two teams from the British Universities American Football League - the first game was played at home to the Royal Holloway Vikings and ended in a 54–0 victory. One week later, they travelled to play the Loughborough Aces and won again, this time 42–7. After completing their obligations, the BAFL formally accepted the Warriors’ (the Cobras) application to join the league in December 2007, allowing them to compete as full members for the 2008 season. They were placed into the newly renamed London and South East Conference in Division Two, where they made a huge impact, going on to complete an undefeated season, culminating in victory over the Tamworth Phoenix at Britbowl XXII. In recent years, the London Warriors senior team has been crowned UK National Champions for the past four seasons (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016). Match Report: Bury Saints vs. London Blitz A The second away fixture for the Blitz saw them travel to Bury, a team whose only other Premiership fixture saw them defeated by cross-town rivals, and today’s opponents, the London Warriors. Receiving the opening kick off, the Blitz set out to impose themselves early, with strong running from the stable of backs - Glen Toonga, Gabriel Quartey, Dwight Caulker and Temi Oduyemi - and dominant offensive line play saw the scoreline tick over, with a pass from QB Joe Thompson to Henry Charlton-Weedy complete up the seam for the score in the first quarter. In the second quarter, miscommunication from the Saints resulted in WR Jasper Van Dooren finding himself wide open, walking in for the score. At this point, the Defense started to turn the screw, led from the front with strong by linemen Charlie Cohen, Ari Halldorsson, Alan Blake, Ronel Daley-Thomas and Deejay Ogunkolati, who frequently tore up the Bury backfield. With over 300 yards of rushing in the first half alone, a pick from DB William Kodjo Davis in the 3rd Quarter, along with some big plays being made on both sides of the ball, the balance begun to tip more into the control of the Blitz. When a deep pass in the 4th Quarter was intercepted by Kyle Jervier on the Blitz 1 yard line, it effectively ended the game, with the Blitz climbing to 2 - 0 to kick off their 2017 campaign. My career with the Blitz started 5 years ago as an active member of the roster; although my history with the team goes back as far as 2007 from my time playing against them as a Farnham Knight. After winning a National Championship at The University of Hertfordshire in 2012, the Knights folded and I needed a new team. Considering that many of the coaches at the time were Blitz players, the decision was a no-brainer! Half a decade on, I’ve never looked back and am proud to be a member of the Navy and White. What is your goal for this season? To win a National Championship. Nothing less will do. After coming up short at the final hurdle for the last four years - especially to today’s opponents the London Warriors - it’s time we got back to the top of the Britball mountain. Who is the best coach you've ever had and why? The most influential person in my football career has to be my very first Head Coach (at the Knights youth), Simon Srour. His passion and enthusiasm for the game is infinitely contagious, and the effort that he put in to make Youth football credible in this country is something that hasn’t been seen for a long time since. He took me from an NFL fan who knew a few of the rules and none of the intricacies of the game, and turned me into a National Champion. Without his guidance and leadership, I wouldn’t be the player I am today almost a decade later. What was the best game of your career and why? The best game of my career is, without question, the BUAFL National Championship in 2012 with the Hertfordshire Hurricanes. Personally, I had the best game of my life on the stat sheet; but more importantly our team was firing on all cylinders from the opening kickoff to the final whistle; a culmination of 2 years of hard work and dedication to get past Birmingham after falling in a thriller to them in the previous year’s playoffs. I regularly still look back at that game and can remember specific play calls and the moments that led us to Meet The Partners DraftKings Following extensive engagement throughout the off season, The London Blitz are pleased to announce the team's partnership with Draft Kings on a multi year sponsorship deal.
