We have had a strong off-season recruitment with over 75 players registered with both the A and B Teams. We have also had several new coaches join the ranks, with Matt Smith and Jon Goddard joining the staff on the A team, and Derrell Jennings and Chad Austin joining the B team. We have also retained the majority of last season’s staff. We have also had the privilege of guest coaches come down to help at training, including Ed Morgan, Aaron Sanders and Jason Brisbane, which has been an inspiration to the players. We have had a couple players depart to go and challenge themselves in Europe with Glen Toonga, last year’s offensive MVP going to the Dresden Monarchs in the GFL 1 and already making an impact helping the team to a 2-0 start. Kodjo Davis has gone out to play for the Helsinki Roosters in the Vaahteraliga in Finland.

In October of 2013 the club was awarded a Sport England Grant enabling them to buy the training equipment and kit needed to take them to the next level, and their ongoing relationship with Thurston Rugby Club ensured that the club had solid foundations for a long and successful future. 2014 opened with the news that the Saints had been accepted into the British American Football League. The roster continued to expand and preparations for the Club’s first ever competitive season started in earnest. Spring blossomed with a successful Controlled Scrimmage against fellow new team, the Portsmouth Dreadnaughts, followed by a victory over the London Blitz Development Team, and a loss away at Swindon Storm. Jump to 2015, and the Saints went into the season with something to prove after a promising but inconsistent rookie year that finished 5-5. However, after starting off with a close victory over the Essex Spartans, they began to dominate the division, frequently running up 40 plus points and finishing the regular season 10-0. The Saints also stormed through the playoffs, beating the Bristol Apache 47-12 in the final of the Rose Bowl and earning a promotion to Division 1.

Sadly Covid-19 is going to continue to impact not only our sport, but all sports for the foreseeable future.” The next 12 months are going to be tough both in the BAFA community but also for many members and their families who are facing personal challenges as well. The one thing I can promise is that we will continue to work hard for you, our members, to ensure that there is and will continue to be a sport and a National Governing Body for the future. Over the last 12 months, society and sports have had a spotlight shown on issues such as financial sustainability, racism, inclusivity, and mental wellbeing, all of which are important issues to our community as well. It’s my hope that you can see some of the advancements we are making on these critical issues in this report and our commitment over the next 12 months to continue to address them.
