We have also had several new coaches join the ranks, with Matt Smith and Jon Goddard joining the staff on the A team, and Derrell Jennings and Chad Austin joining the B team. We have also retained the majority of last season’s staff. We have also had the privilege of guest coaches come down to help at training, including Ed Morgan, Aaron Sanders and Jason Brisbane, which has been an inspiration to the players. We have had a couple players depart to go and challenge themselves in Europe with Glen Toonga, last year’s offensive MVP going to the Dresden Monarchs in the GFL 1 and already making an impact helping the team to a 2-0 start. Kodjo Davis has gone out to play for the Helsinki Roosters in the Vaahteraliga in Finland.

    ELEVEN INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS TO COMPETE FOR A SPOT IN THE 2021 NFL INTERNATIONAL PLAYER PATHWAY PROGRAM Eleven athletes from nine countries will compete for a spot in the 2021 International Player Pathway Program, the NFL announced today. Instituted in 2017, the program aims to provide elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster. “Since its creation in 2017, this program has been a part of the league’s continuous efforts to strengthen the pipeline of international players in the NFL,” said Damani Leech, NFL Chief Operating Officer of International. “We look forward to providing athletes from around the world with the opportunity to showcase their skills as we continue to grow the game globally.” Aaron Donkor (Germany), Taku Lee (Japan), Yoann Miangue (France), Leonel Misangumukini (Austria), Adedayo Odeleye (United Kingdom), Ayo Oyelola (United Kingdom), Max Pircher (Italy), Sammis Reyes (Chile), Bernhard Seikovits (Austria), Lone Toailoa (New Zealand) and Alfredo Gutierrez (Mexico) will soon begin training in the United States in hopes of being selected for a practice squad position for next season through the International Player Pathway Program. One of the NFL's eight divisions, to be chosen at random, will receive the international players selected for the 2021 program.     John Slavin Award 2015 BAFANL Season BAFRA awards the John Slavin Trophy in odd-numbered years to the team with the best game day management. This includes prompt provision of properly attired and effective chain crew and ball boys, spectator facilities such as covered seats, a scoreboard and a referee’s microphone and a game day manager available to the officiating crew from when they arrive. The title is awarded to the team that has comes out best in an audit carried out by BAFRA members at each game. A perfect facility scores 0. The award is named after John Slavin. John was a long-serving BAFRA official and sometime director of the Association who sadly died in October 2005. In his memory, BAFRA has dedicated an award made to a team that shows commitment to improving the game experience for players and fans, as well as officials. The longtime NFL stars added an achievement that will without a doubt move to the top of their accolade-filled biographies when they were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame inAugust, 2014. Jones and Brooks became the first pair of first-ballot Hall of Famers from the same class who attended the same college in over 40 years. The pair’s journey together started 20 years ago. Just as Brooks was wrapping up his All-America career at Florida State in 1994, Jones was joining the Seminoles out of Holmes Community College (Miss.) for the 1995 season. DERRICK BROOKS Linebacker 1991-94 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame WALTER JONES Offensive Tackle 1995-96 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame 138 PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME They never played on the same team at Florida State, but Jones distinctly remembers how excited he was to follow in the footsteps of the star linebacker whom he called the face of the Seminoles’ program. Jones and Brooks were the best at what they did for over a decade in the NFL. Brooks went to 11 Pro Bowls and never missed a game in 14 seasons (all with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), while Jones became the NFL’s premier left tackle, going to nine Pro Bowls over 12 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Both retired in 2008, and, six years later, Jones and Brooks were teammates for the first time as first-ballot Hall of Famers.

    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 14, No. 2 (1992) Origins of the WLAF By Tod Maher When the World League of American Football began its inaugural season last March, it marked the culmination of years of planning by the NFL. If you ask NFL people when they got the idea of putting football teams in Europe (or look in last year’s WLAF media guide for the answer), they’ll probably say 1983. That, of course, is when the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Cardinals played the first NFL exhibition game in London. However, the NFL had planned to place professional teams in Europe as far back as June 5, 1974. That was the day the NFL announced that “it would attempt to introduce pro football to Europe.” The Intercontinental Football League The NFL planned a “satellite” league that would start play in the spring of 1975 and would be called the Intercontinental Football League. The NFL even had nicknames for the six teams. They were the Istanbul Conquerors, the Rome Gladiators, the Munich Lions, the Berlin Bears, the Vienna Lippizzaners (no kidding! ) and the Barcelona Almovogeres (ditto). The NFL also had pre-selected four expansion teams – the Paris Lafayettes, the Copenhagen Vikings, the Rotterdam Flying Dutchmen and the Milan Centurions. The financing and stocking of the teams was to be handled virtually the same as today’s WLAF. The NFL owners were to provide the initial funding, and the league would employ “second-line athletes and rookies from established NFL teams.” Heading the NFL committee that was to put the league together were AI Davis and Tex Schramm.

In October of 2013 the club was awarded a Sport England Grant enabling them to buy the training equipment and kit needed to take them to the next level, and their ongoing relationship with Thurston Rugby Club ensured that the club had solid foundations for a long and successful future. 2014 opened with the news that the Saints had been accepted into the British American Football League. The roster continued to expand and preparations for the Club’s first ever competitive season started in earnest. Spring blossomed with a successful Controlled Scrimmage against fellow new team, the Portsmouth Dreadnaughts, followed by a victory over the London Blitz Development Team, and a loss away at Swindon Storm. Jump to 2015, and the Saints went into the season with something to prove after a promising but inconsistent rookie year that finished 5-5. However, after starting off with a close victory over the Essex Spartans, they began to dominate the division, frequently running up 40 plus points and finishing the regular season 10-0. The Saints also stormed through the playoffs, beating the Bristol Apache 47-12 in the final of the Rose Bowl and earning a promotion to Division 1.

    Chairman’s Welcome Welcome to New River. Last weekend the London Blitz suffered a loss at the hands of someone other than the London Warriors for the first time in a domestic competition since 2009, falling 17-14 to the Bristol Aztecs. This was a wakeup call for all our players, and showed the complacency with which the team had grown to see the competition outside of the capital. This year the parity in the league is greater than ever, and the Blitz will have a battle on their hands every single time they take the field. In the current standings, another loss is not an option if we are to progress to the playoffs. Sunday will see a reinvigorated team take the field as the Blitz face the London Olympians. Nothing will be taken for granted anymore. Enjoy the game. London Olympians The London Olympians are one of the oldest and most successful teams in British American football. Formed in Streatham in 1983, the Olympians won 13 championships between 1992 and 2006, as well as two Eurobowls. Since returning to the Premier division under long-time Head Coach Riq Ayub in 2012, the Olympians have made the playoffs on three occasions. With a new home venue at West Ham and many fresh faces on the playing staff, 2016 sees the Olympians in rebuilding mode both on and off the field as the club looks to re-establish itself as one of the elite programmes in football.
