Research Project Title: Alternative Dredging and Disposal Methods for the Texas Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) 16. Abstract A two-year project, Alternative Dredging and Disposal Methods for the Texas Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, investigates the cost and engineering of long distance pumping, beneficial uses of GIWW-dredged material for the Texas coastal zone, separation techniques for GIWW-dredged material, optimum slurry flow, and alternatives for analyzing dredged material disposal. A cost-estimating program incorporates fuel costs, dredge crew labor costs, routine maintenance and repairs, major repairs, overhead costs, depreciation, profit, mobilization and demobilization, and capital investment cost for a cutter suction dredge. The Cutter Suction Dredge Cost Estimation Program (CSDCEP) estimates the production rate and cost of dredging projects. Comparisons with actual production rate and costs show CSDCEP is accurate. An attractive beneficial use of dredged material from the GIWW is manufactured soil, which can be manufactured using dredged material, recyclable organic waste materials (sewage sludge), and bio-mass (cellulose or saw dust). Researchers estimate the manufacturing and transportation costs at $13 to $20 per cubic yard depending on the blending method, mode of transportation, and ease of excavation. Another beneficial use is thin-layer disposal, spraying dredged material on adjacent wetlands. A geotube filled with dredged material placed along the Texas GIWW could provide a beneficial use while preventing further inundation of wetlands due to erosion. Dewatering wheels and hydrocyclones have been identified as two potential separation techniques. Results from the CD-CORMIX software show that the reduced flow from smaller dredges can reduce turbidity during the dredging process. 17. Key Words 18.     2020 Basin Highlights Report A Watershed Characterization of Little White Oak Bayou, Clear Creek Tidal, Clear Creek Above Tidal, Mustang Bayou, and Halls Bayou INTRODUCTION Whether it is swimming, shipping, fishing, industry, or tourism, water is integral to the way of life for the 6.5 million people living in the Houston-Galveston region. With over 16,000 miles of streams and shorelines, water is all around us. The water that flows through our ditches, creeks, streams, bayous, and rivers feed into one of the nation’s most productive estuaries, Galveston Bay, before entering the Gulf of Mexico. These waters fuel our economy, bringing in billions of dollars and providing tens of thousands of jobs. Over 6.5 million people share these resources, and with another 3.8 million people expected to move to the region over the next 20 years, the strain put on these water resources will continue to rise. The 2020 Basin Highlights Report provides watershed characterizations for several stream segments within the region. This report characterizes the Little White Oak Bayou (Segment 1013A), Clear Creek Tidal (Segment 1101), Clear Creek Above Tidal (Segment 1102), Mustang Bayou (Segment 2432A), and Halls Bayou (Segment 2432C) watersheds. The watershed characterizations identify: • Specific water quality issues and trends; • Sources of point and nonpoint source pollution; • Current strategies and plans to reduce pollution within these watersheds; and • Current and potential stakeholders within these watersheds. H-GAC’s CLEAN RIVERS PROGRAM The Houston-Galveston Area Council’s (H-GAC) Clean River Program is charged with conducting water quality monitoring and assessment to determine the health of water bodies throughout the region.

  • Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
    SYLLABUS This Final Feasibility Report presents the results of investigations to provide protection to the critical habitat area of the endangered whooping crane. Justification for measures recommended in this report are based on provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway traverses approximately 31 miles of the critical habitat area and includes portions of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and the privately-owned Welder Flats area and State-owned Welder Flats Coastal Preserve located on the easterly portion of the study area. Erosion along the channel banks is occurring from a combination of causes, including waterway usage and natural processes. Various alternatives to reduce erosion through this reach and to minimize impacts from possible contaminant spills that could occur from waterway traffic were investigated. These measures included channel rerouting outside of the critical habitat, alternate routes within the critical habitat, and retention of the existing channel alignment. As a result of these investigations and through coordination with the various Federal and State resource agencies, the plan ultimately selected consists of providing 62,000 feet of bank protection for erosion control and the installation of permanent facilities for ready­ deployment of spill control measures. The recommended bank protection is in addition to that previously installed (prior to 1996) as well as that which is planned to be installed through 1997 under the Operations and Maintenance program. This report has demonstrated a Federal interest in providing erosion protection to areas within the critical habitat of the endangered whooping crane adjacent to the waterway and providing spill containment features and equipment to protect those areas from accidental hazardous spills.
