Flemings 129 5 EDITOR'S NOTES I am certain that scholars of human communication are as much subject to human frailties as anyone else. But I hope I will be permitted a certain amount of chauvinistic pleasure because of something which, at least to me, appears to become clearer every day. Those among us who are studying various aspects of communication are finding it increasingly easier to cooperate, to talk to each other, to see common factors, rather than finding our own kind of security by insisting that we are "specialists" whose work or interests "clearly distinguish" us from other scholars. My own prejudices and preconceptions cause me to believe that it is high time for all of us to find ways of working together, while inspiring and encouraging one another rather than to continue the trend of the first half of this century which hopelessly split us into dozens of special interest groups, each one re- inventing the wheel hundred of times each year. Undoubtedly it will take...some time until we can be entirely relaxed and content in each other's presence, but as the small steps forward multiply (and if clurent trends continue), progress will be,come.more evident with the passage of time. Call it an interdisciplinary approach, a holistic view, or a General Systeins orientation, or simply a recognition of the fact that to be human is to communicate. In any case, we appear to be ready to take a look. atthesynergeticqualities of human communication with allof their interactive ramifications, while becoming more and more willing to reach back to certain humanistic rhetorical foundations which earlier had allowed us to consider the whole Man and the whole-Universe of his interests and concerns as they relate toeach other. It is tempting to announce the discovery of trends which may lead to another Renaissance, but I shall resist that temptation in the hope that it won't be too long before I can get on the "bandwagon" with a kind of selfsatisfied smile which indicates that "I told you so." There are important needs which have yet to be met by all of us who profess to be scholars of human communication. One appears to me, to be based on our willingness to learn from the mistakes which have been made by academicians in various disciplines as they struggled to make their fields academkally and scientifically "respectable." Certainly we cannot at this time lay claim to any kind of generally accepted or commonly used theory of human communication. At times we seem to be plunging ahead in our various attempts to achieve academic status, motivated primarily by publish-or-perish policies at various institutions of higher learning. In many instances we confuse anecdotal reports with the development of theoretical concepts which are more generally acceptable. Then again we tend to confuse thoughtful meditation and evaluation with the confused ramblings of exploration which would be better accomplished in some quiet office than in the pages of a professional publication. As we realize the great need for the application of scholarly and scientific discipline and principles, I hope however, that we will not overlook the need for creative thought and challenge based on the insights of the experienced students and scholars. 6 Certainly there are aspects of an these hopes and aspirations represented in the pages of this second issue of the INTERNATIONAL AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICLTION ANNUAL We still fall short of the ideal, which I consider fortunate, because it gives others an opportunity to keep trying in our neverending attempt to reach for perfection, achievement, knowledge, insight. Date: _______________________________________22 June 2018 Signed: _______________________________________ Abstract Code-switching, i.e. the use of lexical items from Language A in stretches of Language B where there are equivalents in Language B, has long been at the centre of bilingualism studies. However, it has received little attention in the first-generation immigrant context, possibly due to its infrequency and insertional characteristic. Consequently, our knowledge of how first-generation immigrants adopt and adjust the host-country language in their intragroup talk is limited and possibly inaccurate. This thesis aims to systematically explore how and why first-generation Thai immigrants in England employ code-switching by: 1) investigating the frequencies, social distribution, sequential patterns and functions of code- switching, and 2) exploring Thai syntactic structures underlying the informants’ code- switching. Approximately 13 hours of audio-recorded conversations obtained from 36 first- generation female Thai immigrants, all of whom are marriage migrants, were analysed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative analysis reveals that the informants’ code-switching occurs infrequently, and that the informants’ proficiency in English speaking and reading skills are the only social variables that are correlated with the frequency of code-switching.

Mr, Mrs, Miss are followed by family name as the clan identity and Sir and Ma’am are for respectful address for adult man and woman. However, in Indonesia, it’s been the phenomenon because there seem to be a collision between how EFL learners practice EHs with what EHs are supposed to be used in English culture. The purpose of this study is to clarify and verify how Indonesian EFL learners perceive on EHs that have been interpreted and practiced for decades in Indonesia. This study applies double approaches. First, cross cultural study which employs content analysis by means of analyzing how EHs are interpreted and practiced under the setting of Indonesian culture. The sources to be analyzed are obtained from English handouts, chats and texts in social media among EFL students, as well as script deriving from teacher-EFL students’ classroom interaction. Second, case study which employs triangulation technique to examine some aforementioned sources.

Lame- duck state legislatures have stripped popularly elected governors of their pow- ers; extreme partisan gerrymanders have warped representative institutions; state officials have nullified popularly adopted initiatives. The federal Consti- tution offers few resources to address these problems, and ballot-box solutions cannot work when antidemocratic actions undermine elections themselves. Commentators increasingly decry the rule of the many by the few. This Article argues that a vital response has been neglected. State constitu- tions embody a deep commitment to democracy. Unlike the federal Constitu- tion, they were drafted—and have been repeatedly rewritten and amended— to empower popular majorities.

The learning of new cultures from individual systems (e.g., interpersonal interaction) cannot be as efficient or effective as learning from collective or institutional systems. Evidence suggests that while primary or individual systems are capable of mediating the learning of secondary institutional culture, they cannot be as effective, efficient, or comfortable sources of cross-cultUral learning as are secondary institutions such as the mass media. As communication resources, the mass media are an institutionalized information, leadership, education, and entertainment service. Accordingly, certain expectations could be drawn, using African students as examples: (1) that the amount of television viewing among African students would be signiiicantly and positively related to cultural adaptation; (2) that Africans students would have a distinctive, if not unique, pattern of television program choice related to cultural value preference; and (3) that African students' amount and type of television viewing would differ from other foreign students.
