Normally the drawings in this series are really excellent but this one falls far below parr. I purchased the Graf Spee book at the same time and the quality of the illustrations are far superior being clear and bright and very lifelike. The Richlieu drawings are dull and drab, lack contrast and shading and are far inferior to other books in the series and it is the lack of contrast that causes this loss of detail. I note that the team who did this edition Richlieu did not have Stefan Draminski in it, Is this significant? The book is OK but only rates a thee out of five. I hope the new Hood book due out very soon is not like this. Ideal for model makers and naval enthusiasts who want to see all the details of a specific ship. This is the first French ship to appear in this series. Although it is a capital ship of the World War II era which seems to dominate this series the Richelieu had a number of design features of great interest not seen in other ships. The two quadruple turrets mounted forward is the most obvious feature. There are also the co-axial multiple directors 3 originally but 2 as depicted mounted at the top of the tower foremast. Then there is the interesting combined funnel and main mast which reminds one of the later "macks" combined mast and stack that appeared on some postwar US ships. The book has a 5 page design, description, and service history which can only be considered barely adequate. Berliner Zinnfiguren | Sobucki, A./Skwiot, M.: The Battleship Richelieu | purchase online

It occurs to me ,that a major hit in the general area of her main turrets , could be catastrophic , whereas Roma's more conventional main battery layout would allow her to "punch on " so to speak. Having said that , they were both beautiful looking ships , but it's ROMA for me , by a nose. The "all forward" main battery arrangement is an attempt to maximize armor thickness by reducing the waterline length that needs to be armored. You can have thicker armor while keeping the total weight the same. This was the philosophy behind the Nelsons , which was reinforced by the 35, ton treaty limit on displacement, though the abortive N3 and G3 ships had a similar arrangement, again, for armoring reasons. One serious problem was that it caused difficulties in placing AA guns. The traditional layout allows the AA batteries to be concentrated in the middle of the ship, giving all around firing arcs, without disruption from the massive blast from the main battery. Front and rear deck view of the Richelieu after her New York refit. So she left Brest naval Yard before the German advance, with just a small provision of shells for her artillery, just enough fuel oil to reach Dakar and a skeletic crew. After a true odyssey she reached the African west coast city on June 23 in with her escort of . After returning to at the time of the armistice, the ship want back to Dakar, by then making allegiance to the Vichy regime. During the Operation Catapult in July, after an ultimatum was issued by HMS Hermes, a squad of Royal Marine Commandos in a fast motor boat tried to damage the ship with depht charges, but failed, prompting the release of torpedo planes to finish off the job. After some rough repairs and the water pumped, the ship was towed to a remote part of Dakar harbor. She was later joined by the Georges Leygues and Montcalm. Their hope was to make capitulate the French ubwilling to fire on their own, and make these ship transferred to the Free French Navy. But it was another failure, the Vichy French garrison stubbornly resisting. In the course of , the Richelieu was completely repaired and her fitting-outs completed. In particular, she received additional AAA. She was fitted with a radar and her naval aviation Loire seaplanes was disposed, as well as hangars, catapults and equipment completely removed to free the rear deck for more AAA. The more recent Jordan and Dumas book is far superior. The rest of the book is devoted to the stunning CAD drawings. The captions are on the weak side with minimal information which is a weakness of the series as a whole. There are more than a few features which are completely unremarked. On the plus side there is a plan view with the Bofors and Oerlikon positions called out with on plan numbers. These are supplemented by perspective line drawings that mimic the front and rear cover and seem superfluous and included just to fill in space. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in this ship. If you have others in this series this one is to the same high standards. This is my first real good look at a French Battleship. I've always been a little puzzled about about the design of these ships as they are rather unorthodox, and the book describes some of the thinking that went into building treaty ships. The ship in the book is as it was completed at the end of the war. I would like to see some some other configuration of these ships during there time not just a snapshot of a day in the life of the ship. Like the other 3D books, this one is outstanding. My only criticism on this one is the decks are colored a little to dark and it makes it a bit harder to see details on the deck. Other wise good job! See all reviews. Back to top. Get to Know Us. The Richelieu class were protected by an armoured belt She had multiple armoured decks. A main armored deck 5. They rested on barbettes protected by The Richelieu class devoted 16, tons of her weight to protection. Fully loaded at almost 41, tons, the armor still accounted for In fact, the Richelieu class compared decently even to later warships such as the Iowa class An often overlooked feature of the Richelieu class was their torpedo defense system. Like most battleships, they featured a comprehensive system of liquid and void filled spaces to absorb the energy of underwater explosions. However, the most important feature of a torpedo defense system was its depth. The deeper the system was, the better it generally performed. This was much deeper than contemporary ships like King George V Overall, the Richelieu class was very well protected with excellent protection above and below the water. Compared to the prewar battleships, they featured armor that was comparable if not slightly better. However, their underwater protection was extremely effective, surpassing pre-war battleships and exceeding many of the later ones as well. It would be no stretch of the imagination to rank the Richelieu class among the best protected battleships ever put into service. When looking at the various fast battleships produced, people often forget the impressive speed of the Richelieu class. France has specified in the requirements that the Richelieu class were to be capable of speeds of 30 knots. At the time, this was a very high speed for a battleship. Only capital ships like HMS Hood, the Renown class battlecruisers, and the Littorio classes could achieve similar speeds. Achieving such a high speed was difficult as the Richelieu class were very wide compared to their length. This gave the ship a length to beam ratio of 7. To move this much hull at 30 knots required a power plant capable of generating ,shp. At the time, this was the most powerful powerplant ever placed into a battleship. It would not be until some years later when the Iowa class , shp would finally surpass them. The Richelieu class achieved the desired speeds and then some. During trials, Richelieu was able to reach 30 knots while using only ,shp and achieved 31 knots when using the engines at ,shp. During a maximum speed trial, the battleships achieved a speed just shy of 32 knots when forcing the engines to ,shp. Even as more advanced battleships such as the Iowa 32 knots and Bismarck classes 30 knots came into service, the Richelieu class remained competitive in speed. The Richelieu class were true fast battleships, designed with just as much emphasis on speed as she had on armor and firepower. Only a few capital ships could match the Richelieu class in speed and even fewer could outrun them. This made them well rounded battleships, well suited to action in the Atlantic or Mediterranean. They would have been very effective in their role in hunting down German and Italian raiders. Whether it be due to the fall of France or their complicated service history during the Second World War, the Richelieu class suffer from a poor reputation. I believe this to be an undeserved reputation. The issues they suffered from affected most battleships. The difference is that other battleships had issues worked out.
