  • The Merlot Magician
modern winemaking and now, with his Aquila Sangiovese, he had done it again. The story wasn’t there in the Chronicle’s wine section that morning; instead, a front-page head- line caught his attention, announcing that a huge fire had destroyed $100 million worth of wine in a warehouse on Mare Island, California. Thackrey had nearly all his wine, some 4,000 cases, stored in a warehouse on Mare Island called Wines Central and his first thought was reflex denial: ‘Hmm, I didn’t know there was another wine stor- age warehouse on Mare Island.’ He clicked open the story. The warehouse was indeed Wines Central and it had been burning since 3.30 the previous afternoon. Despite the efforts of 120 firefighters, 21 fire engines and 12 aircraft, the fire was still sending up a 700ft plume of smoke into the sky. ‘My reaction then was a fairly basic “Oh shit”,’ Thackrey says. ‘Outside of that warehouse I had barely enough wine left to drink myself into the grave. On the other hand I knew that building and I thought some of my wine might survive a fire there. It was a vast, vast military fortress built of reinforced concrete and steel and only one part of it was wood, so I knew it wasn’t going to burn to the ground. There was also no question in my mind that it was arson.’ The first call he made was to his insurance broker. He left a message saying they would have to file a claim, possibly a very large claim.

  • Viticultural Factors and Resveratrol in Grapes and Wine
BAVARESCO ET AL., FATTORI VITICOLI E RESVERATROLO NELL’UVA E NEL VINO, PAG. 1 VITICULTURAL FACTORS AND RESVERATROL IN GRAPES AND WINE Luigi BAVARESCO, Matteo GATTI, Maria Isabel van Zeller de Macedo Basto GONÇALVES Istituto di Frutti-Viticoltura, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore , Piacenza, Italia Introduction In recent time the relation between food and health has been the subject of a considerable amount of media interest highlighting in particular how the second is deeply influenced by the first. It is primarily the medical profession who is leading in the direction of understanding this relation, in particular the risks of certain habits, aware of the need to prevent related illness not only to keep patients healthy, but also to contain the public health expenditure One of the item attracting a lot of attention is wine, a product of ancient tradition and integral part of the Italian and Mediterranean culture. It is both an ancient and modern beverage, which is neither good or bad for health, but the effect of which depends on different factors like the amount drunk or the general health of the person drinking it. This is not the place to underline the health effect of abusing wine, it is worth instead to remember its actual beneficial effect to healthy people and in moderate consumption. This last aspect, possibly already known to doctors, came to a lot of media attention about 15 years ago, when a very popular television program in the States, gave the news of an epidemiology research conducted by two French scientist (Renaud e De Lorgeril) published in 1992.

  • Villa Dei Misteri: the Ancient Wine of Pompeii
Villa dei Misteri: The Ancient Wine of Pompeii Everybody knows Italy has a long winemaking historydating back to Roman times, but few are aware of the fact that the same wine the citizens of ancient Rome used to drink is still being produced today. Pompeii (in the Campania region in the south of Italy) is 2000 years old. The city was covered with lava after the volcano, Vesuvio, erupted in 79 B.C. These 18th-century ruins are now visited by more than 2 million tourists each year. What’s new today is the active wine production taking place at that archaeological site! In the 1980s, the Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritagestarted a search beneath the archaeological site to discover the original plants, trees and flowers and recover them after 2000 years had passed. During their research, they discovered grapevines. They turned to Mastroberardino, an historical local winery, known for their efforts to protect and enhance thenative varieties. Researchers asked the winery to handle this piece of the research. The study progressed through several phases and the analysis of the berries and vines remainsin laboratory along with the casts of plants, similar to the amazing casts of the bodies trappedunder the lava. Based upon where the vines were located, the winery was able to reproduce the grapevines with the same density as the original ones Thanks to the numerous books written by Romans, such as Naturalis Historia by Plinio, it was possible to learn more about ancient farming techniques of the vines. In 2001, from this fascinating recovery, "Villa dei Misteri" wine (named after one of the most impressive villas in Pompeii) was born.
