To make things even simpler, we put some basic tasting notes under each wine. Don't look for "reminis- cent of stone fruit with a hint of lychee" (who the heck knows what a lychee is anyway, let alone knows what they taste or smell like). Aromatic, dry white, no oak, startingly alive. Douro Quinta de la Rosa, “Rosa” - Portugal 2016 $29 Touriga Nacional and some other grapes you have never heard of - medium bodied, bright fruit Garnacha Bodegas Breca “Breca” - Calatayud, Spain 2017 $37 Deep, black, purple, spicy, full bodied, great wine, great value - 90 pts w.a. Cabernet Cousino Macul - Maipo Valley, Chile 2016 $29 Not too big, not too small, just right - good Cabernet is like Classic Rock to us - and this is just like that Textbook - Napa Valley, California 2018 $49 There is no Keynesian-based reason why great Napa Cabernet should all be $100+ - this proves it - fantastic wine Shiraz D’Arenberg, "The Footbolt" - South Australia 2016 $39 Not a mouth puckering, "too big for its' own good" Shiraz but still true to its' roots - spicy, jammy and big OUR ALL-STAR LINE-UP - $55 - $125 Here are some fairly stunning wines, selected from our list, priced between $55 and $125 chosen for typicitiy (e.g. the Pinot Noir tastes like a Pinot Noir, lighter bodied and elegant), deliciousness, and impact. Impact meaning that these are wines that we hope will "stay with you" for awhile. We certainly remember the first time we tried these beauties. Cotes du Rhone Chateau Beaucastel, Coudelet de Beaucastel - France 2019 $79 A suberb example of an all too often forgotten wine - whites from the Rhone Sauvignon Blanc Vie di Romans, “Piere Sauvignon” - Friuli Isonzo, Italy 2017 ( Tre Bicchieri) $65 Italy for Sauv Blanc? For sure, one of the best we have ever tasted. Riesling - Kabinett Donnhoff, Kreuznacher Krotenpfuhl - Nahe, Germany 2016 $69 Juicy peach and plum fruit, lemony citrus, savory salinity, and still nice and dry Albarino Palacios de Fefinanes, “1583” - Rias Baixas, Spain 2018 $59 Paella, perfect match. Lobster, perfect too. Chardonnay Patz & Hall - Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Coast 2016 $79 All the stuff you’d expect - but in all the right proportions. Full bodied and delicious. REDS Rioja Lopez y Heredia, “Vina Cubillo” - Crianza Spain 2011, 2012 $79 Perfect Balance between fruit, tannins, acidty, body, etc. - 92 pts. w.e. Super Tuscan Rocca di Frassinello, “Ornello” - Italy 2016 $69 Some Sangiovese, some Cab, some Merlot - “Elegant + understated” - 92 w.a. Grenache, etc. K Vintners, “The Boy” - Columbia Valley, Washington 2014 $99 . ripe, wild, peppery, meaty, rose petal and olive scented effort that has full-bodied richness, 95 pts. w.a. Burgundy Vincent Girardin, Vieilles Vignes - Volnay 2015 $125 A great producer with old vines from a great vintage - sure things in Burgundy are hard to find but this is it - a perfect match for a split table - goes well with our steaks and with richer seafood items Syrah Blends Sans Liege, “The Offering” - Santa Barbara 2018 $69 Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, big fruit, Chateauneuf-like Samsara - Santa Barbara County 2015 $79 Pristine, powerful and purple fruit - drinking very well right now - 92 pts. w.a. Malbec Catena, Paraje Altamira" - Mendoza, Argentina 2017 $79 "Really gorgeous" 92 pts. w.s. - powerful but not overwhelming, great with steaks Cab Blend Justin, “Isoceles” - Paso Robles, California 2017 $125 Always a “wine of the vintage” the Isoceles is a perfect match for lamb or beef Pinot Noir Anthill Farms - Anderson Valley, California

They are planted to mainly flat vineyards, at high elevations with the vines growing in brown limestone and clay soils. Vines are trained to wires to allow optimal control of ripening. Grapes were hand harvested and brought to the winery. After destemming the grapes underwent alcoholic and malo-lactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Following fermentation the wine was aged for 6 months in a combination of 70% French oak and 30% American oak barrels. Reviews: Silver Medal 3rd Asia Wine Trophy, Daejeon Korea “Opaque ruby. Hints of mocha and licorice emerge slowly, complementing smoky, spicy ripe blackber- ry and mulberry aromas. The palate presents ripe dark berry and floral pastille flavors, with a peppery nuance adding back-end lift and cut. Plush but lively, the finish has good thrust and smooth, easygoing tannins.

VARIETAL WINES ACCORDING TO THEIR SENSORY DESCRIPTORS Discriminação de vinhos tintos Brasileiros varietais de acordo com suas características sensoriais Alberto Miele1, Luiz Antenor Rizzon2 ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper was to establish the sensory characteristics of wines made from old and newly introduced red grape varieties. To attain this objective, 16 Brazilian red varietal wines were evaluated by a sensory panel of enologists who assessed wines according to their aroma and flavor descriptors. A 90 mm unstructured scale was used to quantify the intensity of 26 descriptors, which were analyzed by means of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The PCA showed that three important components represented 74.11% of the total variation. PC 1 discriminated Tempranillo, Marselan and Ruby Cabernet wines, with Tempranillo being characterized by its equilibrium, quality, harmony, persistence and body, as well as by, fruity, spicy and oaky characters. The other two varietals were defined by vegetal, oaky and salty characteristics; PC 2 discriminated Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Arinarnoa, where Pinot Noir was characterized by its floral flavor; PC 3 discriminated only Malbec, which had weak, floral and fruity characteristics. The other varietal wines did not show important discriminating effects. Index terms: Sensory analysis, enology, Vitis vinifera.
