DOMAINE JEAN AUBRON FOLLE BLANCHE At Jean Aubron, a domaine that resides outside of Nantes, near the Atlantic Coast, Jean-Pascal Aubron–a fourth generation vigneron–strives to make bone-dry Muscadet wines. And though the Muscadet-Sevre et Maine appellation allows for all Muscadet Sur Lie wines to contain 3 grams of residual sugar, and for all others to contain 5 grams, Jean-Pascal first and foremost pushes his fermentations to the end, to yield wines with zero residual sugar that are dry and crisp with high acidity, and suitable for aging. • A Molecular Marker Set Combining a Retrotransposon Insertion and SSR Polymorphisms Is Useful for Assessing Diversity in Vitis
Received: 17 August 2020 y Accepted: 11 May 2021 y Published: 25 June 2021 DOI:10.20870/oeno-one.2021.55.2.4473 A molecular marker set combining a retrotransposon insertion and SSR polymorphisms is useful for assessing diversity in Vitis Frédérique Pelsy, Lucie Bevilacqua, Sophie Blanc and Didier Merdinoglu Université de Strasbourg, INRAE, SVQV UMR-A 1131, F-68000 Colmar, France *corresponding author: [email protected] Associate editor: Laurent Jean-Marie Torregrosa ABSTRACT Molecular markers, based on DNA polymorphisms, are useful tools for identifying individuals, establishing phylogenetic relationships, managing collections of genetic material or assisting breeding. In the present study, we developed a marker set to differentiate Vitis species, grapevine varieties or clones belonging to the same variety. This novel marker set combines, in four PCR amplifications, the presence/absence of a remarkable retrotransposon, Tvv1-Δ3460, inserted at its single locus and the SSR polymorphism present within its two LTRs. By studying a collection of Vitaceae accessions, we showed the prevalence of two allelic forms of Tvv1-Δ3460 - one of which was partially truncated - in Vitis species. Out of the twenty-five studiedVitis species, the insertion of a Tvv1-Δ3460 element was detected in twenty, including Vitis vinifera. The homozygous vs heterozygous state of the element insertion was determined by amplifying the empty site. Additionally, each Tvv1-Δ3460 LTRs included a microsatellite sequence useful for designing markers based on LTR length. The LTR-SSR markers distinguished most of the fifty-two cultivars and revealed polymorphism within five of the seven varieties studied. • 2011 Kenwood Zinfandel Reserveproduct-Pdf
2011 Kenwood Zinfandel Reserveproduct-pdf - Sonoma County, California Why We're Drinking It Sold out at the winery, and only produced in the best years, this Reserve Zin is packed with jammy, juicy ripe fruit and exemplifies the massive, bold yet somehow still wonderfully balanced style that defines the best Zins from Sonoma County. Kenwood is pretty much a household name, especially when it comes to Zin, and this historic Sonoma winery deserves much of the credit for the popularity of quality Zinfandel today. While many of Kenwood’s releases can hardly be considered small production or boutique, their Reserve Zin is made in quite limited amounts and only in those vintages that warrant it. The 2011 vintage was spectacular for Zin, as evidenced in this broad-shouldered, super juicy red. Spicy, with a judicious note of herbs and floral aromatics, the 2011 Reserve was aged over 20 long months in a combination of French (62%) and American (38%) oak and includes a small amount of Syrah for added grip. The wine is drinking at its absolute peak right now and makes a delectable match for slow-cooked red meats, barbecued pork ribs or pasta tossed in a red sauce. Reasons why we love it: Kenwood’s roots stretch all the way back to 1906, when Pagani Brothers Winery opened up shop in what is today Kenwood’s home. Since 1970 Kenwood has turned out vintage after vintage of great wines released always at reasonable prices. For this Reserve Zinfandel winemaker Pat Henderson selected one barrel at a time (including the addition of 3% Syrah) from the best lots of Kenwood’s 2011 harvest.

  • Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
SONOMA COUNTY CABERNET SAUVIGNON For more than three decades, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series remains the ultimate expression of artistry and ne winemaking by blending the nest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Sonoma County. THE ARTIST Clare E. Rojas (born 1976) tells stories though painting, music, installations and video work. Her narratives used to be based in folk art tableaus that tackled gender stereotypes. Recently she has moved into pure geometric abstractions. She sees them as part of a continuum free of limitations and tied to her interest in color, line, shape and space. The geometric abstractions reference West Coast modernism, Quaker art, Native American textiles, Byzantine mosaics, and Outsider art. “For me the shift to abstraction was personal. There are a couple of challenges I find in abstraction. One is letting go of the idea that the viewer is supposed to perceive my work one way. There is no right or wrong way to look at the work.” Based in San Francisco, CA Clare takes inspiration for her art from her surroundings. For the Untitled piece featured on the 2013 label, Clare was moved to capture the reflection of light and shadow of a landscape over the course of a day, capturing time in moments. THE VINEYARDS Since its first vintage in 1975, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series has SONOMA COUNTY LAKE SONOMA represented the “best of the best” of our Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year ROCKPILE SONOMA COAST select vineyards located throughout Sonoma County’s premier Cabernet Sonoma County appellations are picked at the peak of flavor and then carefully crushed, DRY CREEK FORT ROSS VALLEY ALEXANDER VALLEY fermented, and aged.

  • Pinot Pedigree Diagram
PINOT PEDIGREE DIAGRAM No fewer than 156 western European grape varieties make up this huge pedigree of natural crosses, with savagnin, gouais blanc and pinot playing the major roles. Given the number of varieties that are currently unknown (?), this pedigree is just one of the possible interpretations of all direct parent–offspring relationships that have been discovered by DNA parentage analyses (Pinot and teroldego, which have a grandparent–grandchild relationship, are included to illustrate the unexpected link between Pinot and syrah). It strongly challenges the commonly assumed independent origins of western European varieties and argues in favour of a small core set of founder varieties that have given birth through natural crosses to the significant biodiversity we know today. For the sake of clarity, trebbiano toscano and folle blanche appear twice in the diagram. Gatefold_Pinot.indd 1 23/07/2012 15:10 ? Gänsfüsser ? Chatus ? César ? ? ? Pougnet Sérénèze Furmint ? • Nov 2019 Holidays in Sonoma
NOV 2019 HOLIDAYS IN SONOMA Greetings, Much like last year, the 2019 vintage gave us a late start to the growing season followed by mild weather. Since we weren’t faced with too many heat spikes, we were able to harvest the fruit at its ideal ripeness. The quantity of fruit is on par with the 20-year average, and the quality is excellent. Another spectacular harvest! Sauvignon Blanc came in crisp and bright, Pinot Noir is elegant and balanced, and Cabernet Sauvignon is nice and full bodied this year. We will be busy into December barreling down our 2019 reds as they nish fermentation and topping up our barrel-fermented Russian River Chardonnay for its long slumber until bottling next year. I’m also pleased to share that Sonoma County was recently named “Wine Region of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast. This recognition is a testament to the eorts of the many outstanding growers, winemakers, and wineries in the region. Sonoma has certainly been an amazing place to work and call home. I wish you all a wonderful holiday with family and loved ones. Cheers, Zeke Neeley, Kenwood Vineyards Winemaker BLANC DE BLANCS APPELLATION SONOMA county ACIDITY/PH 8.4/3.02 ALCOHOL 12.5% TASTING NOTES fruit. • HOW DO WE FEEL ABOUT NATURAL WINE? We Drink, Breathe, and Sleep Thinking About the History of the Humble Grape and Its Importance in the World
HOW DO WE FEEL ABOUT NATURAL WINE? We drink, breathe, and sleep thinking about the history of the humble grape and its importance in the world. Kinda a lot of pressure for a fermented beverage, but we know Wine can handle it. We’ve gone all in on natural wine because we believe in celebrating farmers and other stewards of the land who work tirelessly to create biodiverse landscapes. Think of wine as a transmitter of a certain place and time in history: if made with nothing but grapes, a bottle has the ability to tell us what the soil in the vineyard is composed of, what the weather was like in a given vintage, and what the surrounding flora and fauna are doing. Cover it up with any number of 60-plus legal chemical additives, and what are you left with? Something engineered that no longer transmits its story. There is no official definition of what natural wine is. But we have our definition, and here’s our promise: every wine on this list is grown organically or biodynamically, free of any chemicals in the vineyard. Every wine on this list is made without any additives except sulfur, which is naturally occurring in grapes. Every wine on this list is fermented with its own living, wild yeast. And every wine on this list is made in small, or very small, amounts. It’s difficult to find fault with any of that. We love these wines and the people behind them, and we hope you do too. Corkage: $20 per 750ml not on our list, limit 2 bottles per party.
