This list was compiled as part of the Sgeul na Gàidlig aig Oilthigh Ghlaschu (The story of Gaelic at the University of Glasgow) project. The sources are all in English and the names have been kept as they were originally recorded. The first mention of Celtic as a degree subject in class catalogues in session 1906-1907 when the three following students took Celtic courses as their degree (or as part of their degree).

N.B. the following lists are of students that enrolled in these classes at the start of each academic year, not evidence that they actually attended. The actual number of students who completed the assessment on these courses seems to have been considerably smaller.

The following information is drawn from the ‘Matriculations database of male students, 1904-1911’ (held at Glasgow University Archive services) and supplemented by other sources.

1 Malcolm Laing, M.A., 1913 . Born 8 August 1888. Commenced his studies in 1906-1907, enrolled for another class in 1908-09, and again in 1909-1910, before (presumably) finishing off his final year, 1912-13. Subjects taken at Glasgow, along with Celtic were Latin and Greek (first year), Moral Philosophy and English Literature (second year) and Geology and Celtic in his third year. He was born in North Uist and gave his home address as Cnoc an Torr, Lochmaddy, North Uist . His father was a farmer named Ranald Laing. Malcolm’s term time addresses were 23 Willowbank Crescent in 1906, 2 Glasgow Street in 1908, and he returned to Willowbank Crescent for his third year. Malcolm Laing was treasurer of An Comann Oiseanach, 1908-1909. He appears in the prize list for Celtic in 1910-11, having been made proxime accesserunt to the first prize. He was resident at Knockintorran, Lochmaddy after graduating, 1913, and still described as a student in the Register of members of the General Council of the University of Glasgow, 1 January 1914. The war may have interrupted his postgraduate studies and he was still described as a student in the Register of members, 1918. GUA DC 183/11/39. GUA DC 183/11/143. GUA DC 69/2. An “M. Laing, M.A,” probably the same man, served as a private in the 14 th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War. J.R. 2 Archibald McLean (b. 21 August 1881) graduated with an M.A. in 1907 . He had already completed three years of study and 1906-1907, was his final session, his subjects of study being Latin and Celtic. He was born in Tiree, the son of Donald Maclean, a farmer. Archibald gave his home address as Cornaig, Tiree . By 1912 Archibald was living back at the ‘White House’ in Tiree and worked as a teacher. His term time address was 1054 Argyle Street, Sandyford, Glasgow. Register of Members of the General Council of the University of Glasgow, 1912. GUA DC 183/11/39.

3 Alexander Mackay had already completed one session of study at the beginning of 1906-1907. He was 25 years old at the time of this matriculation (Autumn 1906) when he enrolled for Moral Philosophy and Celtic. He was born (and gave his home address as) Strathy Point, Strathy, Sutherland . His father, Donald Mackay (deceased) had been a carrier. His term address was 84 Buccleuch Street. Unclear at present whether he graduated or not.

4 Donald Macdonald , born in , Lewis, 17 October 1882, graduated M.A. in 1909 . He was the son of Norman Macdonald, crofter, of 14 Cross, Ness , . Donald had completed one year of study before the start of 1907-1908 when this information was compiled. His term time address at the time of his matriculation was 28 Dowanhill Street, Partick. The Register of Members of the General Council of the University of Glasgow records him in 1912 as still being a student and resident at Cross, Ness. GUA DC 183/11/39. His sister, Christina, attended the Celtic class as a single class enrolment student, in session 1910-1911 (see below).

5 John Macdougall , born 9 July 1883, graduated M.A., 1909 . He was 24 years old at the start of session 1907- 1908, and had already completed three sessions. His subjects of study are named as Latin, Celtic and English literature. He was born in Easdale, Argyl l, and his father, Neil, was a slate quarrier. His home address is given as Achabalvicar , by Oban, Argyllshire. His term address was 299 New City Road, Glasgow. Two John Macdougalls are given in the members’ register of the General Council of the University of Glasgow for 1912, both with an M.A. from 1909. One of these was resident at Oban the other at Glasgow. GUA DC 183/11/39.

6 Donald Malcolm Macdonald was born in Stornoway, Lewis, and was 25 years old at the time of this matriculation, 1907-1908. He was the son of John Macdonald, tailor & clothier. He had already completed one year of study by the time of this matriculation when he enrolled to study History and Celtic. He gave his home address as Mackenzie House, Garnethill, Glasgow, and his present address as 84 Buccleuch Street, Garnethill. He appears in the prize list for Celtic in 1910-11, having been made proxime accesserunt to the first prize. University of Glasgow Calendar, 1910-11 , page 564 (GUAS Sen 10/51). Macdonald have been the only one of these students, who took an exam or who passed from the 1907-08 session (‘Pass lists in Celtic,’ Roinn na Ceiltis).

7 Farquhar Matheson was aged 26 at the start of session 1907-1908, his second year of study, when he intended to study Logic and Celtic. He was the son of Ewen Matheson, farmer, Plockton, Wester Rosss . He gave his home address as 19 Harbour St. Plockton, Ross-shire. His term address was 106 Buccleuch Street.

8 There is no record of Mary A. McLaine on the ‘University story’ site. According to the matriculation albums she was aged 21 at the time of enrolment, 1907-08, and had been born in Glasgow . Her father, Neil, still living, was a joiner. Her address (home and term) is given as 15 Rutland Street, off Paisley Road. Mary enrolled for Mathematics and Celtic classes in session 1907-08, her first year at University. She had progressed to the Higher class in Celtic by session 1910-11 and she won the class prize for her performance (sharing this with John M. Maclennan). GUA R8/5/28/10. GUA R8/5/31/10. Mary McLaine was secretary of An Comann Oiseanach, 1908- 09. GUA Sen 10/50, GU Calendar (1908), p. 755. GUAS Sen 10/53, G.U. Cal., 1911-12 , p. 590. Mary Anne took classes in English, Latin, French, Logic, Maths, as well as Celtic during the course of her studies, October 1906 to October 1911, and yet although she won a prize at Celtic, she seems to have left the University without graduating (Abandoned student files, ‘Mary Anne McLaine, Glasgow,’ GUAS, R6/58). She appears to have been the first female president of An Comann Oiseanach, referred to as such in a reunion in 1938. Glasgow Herald , 18 February 1938, page 12.

Where a reference to manuscript matriculation albums is not given (R8) the information is drawn from the ‘Matriculations database of male students, 1904-1911’ held at Glasgow University Archive services.

1 John Davidson was aged 22 at the start of session 1908-1909. He had been born in Glasgow , and his father, also John Davidson, was a motorman. John’s home (and term) address was 64 MacLellan Street, Kinning Park. He had completed two previous sessions of study and enrolled for English and Celtic for session 1908-09. John appeared in a prize list, second place, following Norman Macleod, below in the Celtic section under ‘prizes and first-class certificates of merit.’ University of Glasgow Calendar, 1909-10 , page 562 (GUAS Sen 10/51).

2 Norman Macleod was 26 when he enrolled for session 1908-1909 for Celtic and he also enrolled the following year to take Mathematics, Education and Celtic. He had previously completed two sessions at University. He was born in Lewis and his father, John Macleod, was a merchant. His home address was given as 8 Aird Point , Lewis and his term addresses were given as 14 Wood Street, Partick (1908-09) and 960 Sauchiehall Street (1909-10). Norman came first out of two prizes awarded for prizes and first class certificates of merit awarded to Celtic students, 1909-10 (see John Davidson, above). Norman was awarded the ‘prize and first class certificate of merit’ again in the 1910 for the Higher class. He graduated M.A. in 1915 and became a teacher. 3 John Kennedy Mackenzie was aged 23 at the start of session 1908-09. He had completed three sessions of study and was enrolling to take classes in Celtic and Maths at the start of this term. His birthplace was given as Edinburgh, and his father, Allan Mackenzie, was a clergyman. John’s home address was the Manse, Uig, Lewis . His term time address was c/o Mrs Macleod, 1 West End Park St, Glasgow.

4 John McNaughton was aged 28 at the start of session 1908-09. He had been born in Uig Lewis, and his father, also John was a crofter. This was his first year of study and he signed up to take Latin and Celtic. He enrolled for Logic in term 1909-1910. His home address was given as Kirkibost, Bernera (Beàrnaraigh Leòdhais), and his term time address was 51 Stratford Street.

5 Neil MacDougall was 20 years old at the time of his matriculation. This was his first year of study and Celtic was the only subject for which he had enrolled. He was born at , Broadford, , which was also given as his home address. His father, Allan was a minister. His term time address was c/o Miss Gay, 15 Scotia Street. R8/5/29/12.

6 Ronald Mackenzie was 23 at the time of matriculation. He was born in , Broadford, Skye , and gave this as his home address. His father, Alexander, was a labourer. This was his first year at University and Celtic was the only subject of study named. The term address is given as a rather cryptic “70 MacLure”. R8/5/29/12.

7 John MacGillivray was 25 years old and this was his first year of study, Celtic being the sole subject of study for which he had enrolled. His birthplace was given as , , Isle of Skye , and his home address was 8 Camuscross, Isle Orusay, Skye. His father, Neil, was a farmer. His term address was c/o Miss Barteil (?), 101 West Graham St. R8/5/29/12.

8 Murdo Morrison was 42 years old at the time of his enrolment for the Celtic class and this was his first year of study. He was born at 3 Holm, Stornoway , which was still his home address. His late father, also Murdo, had been a ploughman. His term time address was c/o Mrs Mackinnon, 391 St Vincent Street. R8/5/29/12.

22 John Macdonald was aged 28 in Autumn 1909. John was born in Benbecula , Inverness-shire. Celtic was the only subject for which he enrolled for the coming session and it is not clear from the matriculation album whether this was his first year of study or if he had attended University previously. His late father, Donald Macdonald, had been a crofter. His home address was given as Dunganichy (?) Machair, Benbecula, Lochmaddy. His term address was c/o Mrs Farquharson, 12 Derby Street, Glasgow. R8/5/30/5.

23 John Mackay Maclennan was 23 when he matriculated, 1909-1910. He was born in Durinish, Ross-shire , and his father, Alexander (deceased) had been a seaman. He intended to study Logic and Celtic in session 1909-1910. His home address was Durinish, Ross-shire and his term address was 3 Brooklyn Place, Lanarkshire. 24 George Thomson started his studies in session 1907-1908 when he enrolled, aged 21, for Maths and Latin. He had completed two sessions of study when he came to enrol for Celtic and Moral Philosophy at the beginning of session 1909-10. He was born at Stornoway and his home address was 21 Tong, Isle of Lewis . His father, Alexander, was a crofter. In 1907-08 he lived at 15 Hampden Street and in term 1909-10 his address was c/o Chappelle, 53 Mount Street, Glasgow. Thomson was on the committee of the Ossianic Society, 1910- 11. 31 Lucy Cameron was aged 22 when she enrolled for Celtic and this was her first year of attendance at the University. Her birthplace was Kentra, Acharacle , S.O. Argyllshire and her home address was Shielfort east, Acharacle . Her father’s occupation was given here as ‘master of a small steamer. He intended to study Celtic and history in session 1911-12. He was born at Cladach Kirkibost, North Uist . His father, John MacAulay, was a minister and Campbell’s home address was given as Staffin Manse, Isle of Skye . His term address was 11 Watson Street, Hillhead. R8/5/32/5. He may have been caught up in the war although his name does not appear in the Rolls of Honour. A wartime interruption might explain why Campbell MacAulay graduated M.A. as late as 1920 (unless there was another student of the same name) and then became a teacher at Riddlesworth, Thetford, Norfolk ( Reg.
