Journal of the Department of English Vidyasagar University Vol. 11, 2013-2014 Sanskritisation of Bengali, Plight of the Margin and the Forgotten Role of Tagore Sandipan Sen It is well known that, after the victory of Lord Clive against Sirajuddaula at the battle of Plassey in 1757, there was an unprecedented reign of loot in Bengal, as the British presided over a drainage of wealth from Bengal. According to one estimate, apart from the “official compensation” to the British army and navy, the members of the Council of the British East India Company received an amount of L 50,000 to L 80,000 each, and Clive alone took away L 234,000 over and above a jaigir worth L 30,000 a year (Smith 473). This apart, most British men carried out a grand loot at individual levels, the extent of which is difficult to imagine. The magnitude of the loot can be estimated from the fact that Govind Chand, the descendant of Mahatab Chand - the Jagat Seth during the battle of Plassey who had a staggering annual income of Rs 26,800,000 in 1765 - was reduced to penury as a result of the loot, and the British rulers granted him a monthly dole of Rs 1200 (Sikdar 986). Needless to say, this grand loot completely destroyed the economic structure of Bengal, which was a prosperous and wealthy kingdom. However, it often eludes our attention that the arrival of the British not only destroyed the economy of Bengal, but also the language of Bengal, i.e. the Bengali language. -

It uncovers a historical pattern of Bengali intellectual life that marked the period from the 1870stothe1920s, whereby an imperial imagination was transformed into an international one, as a generation of intellectuals born between 1885 and 1905 reinvented the political category of “youth”. Hermeneutics, as a philosophically informed study of how meaning is created through conversation, and grounded in this essay in the thought of Hans Georg Gadamer, helps to reveal this pattern. -

CHAPTER-V · Linguistic Question : A Cultural Resurgence CHAPTER-V LINGUISTIC QUESTION: A CULTURAL RESURGENCE. Language is one of the major issues of socio-cultural aspect of a community. The language/ dialect of Northeastern part of India is genetically of the eastern group of the Indo- Aryan family (along with~ at least Oriy_a, B.angla and Assamiy~) with in the member of th~ Putative Bengali- Assames sub- group .1 There is a general view among the scholars that this language/ dialect is spoken in East Purnea district of Bihar, Morang and Jhapa districts of Nepal; Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Darjeeling and Dinajpur ,Maida· districts of West Bengal ; the old Goalpara district of Assam (now Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara); Rangpur, Dinajpur and Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.2 The spoken language of the Rajbanshi people has been identified in various way such as northern dialect of Bengali, 3 Goalparia dialect of Assamese, 4 Kamta, 5 Kamrupi, 6 Deshi, 7 Kamtai language, 8 Kamta Behari9 etc. Sir George A. Grierson in his Linguistic Survey of India has first mentioned the ·language used by the Rajbanshis of Rangpur, Darjeeling, . 10 . Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Goalpara as a separate dialect. He named this dialect as 'Rajbanshi' since this is spoken mostly by the Rajbanshis but he considered it a dialect of Bengali itself. 11 Rajbanshi dialect accordiQg to Grierson "belong to.. the eastern variety of th~ language, has still points of different, which entitle it to be classes as a separate dialect. It has one sub- dialect called 'Bahe' spoken in the Darjeeling Teari." 12 Grierson also argued that the Koches who adopted Hinduism and Islam generally speak the Rajbanshi dialect and it is called the 'Rangpuri'. -

Bengalis Thousand Years 8670/ 021116 The BengAlis: A ThousAnd YeArs Jawhar Sircar The last few days of a century that also happen to be at the end of a whole millennium, are bound to stir a strange excitement in even the most placid person. The two most expected feelings that hold their sway can perhaps be summarized as: introspection and expectation — drawing a balance sheet of the past as also trying to gauge what the future holds. Such an exercise can cover not only a single person or his immediate concerns; it may as well cover his locality, his state or nation and may be stretched to entire humanity. The constraints of my acquaintance and knowledge hardly qualify me to scan any group higher or bigger than my own people: the Bengalis. Even in this, my limitations now plague me more than my enthusiasm to try out such a review — but these notwithstanding; the sheer thrill of initiating an animated adda on the subject overpowers me. At the beginning, let me make it clear that I do not have the audacity to try to cover a thousand years in just a few pages: hence I will concentrate only on certain significant periods or issues, for the sake of presenting a viewpoint. So let us begin: are the Bengalis a thousand years old? Or even more? Historians tell us about our history during the Pala- Sena period, which would give us about 1250 years to be proud of, but if we include the great Sasanka, we could be share-holders in a great concern that goes back fourteen centuries. -

Thesis Advisor: Diana M. Owen, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Bangladesh is one of the few nations where living citizens can recall being subjects of three different countries, all within one lifetime. Additionally, it is the only nation founded in pursuit of linguistic recognition. This non-traditional study explores the manner in which collective memory is used in nation building, the formation of Bengali identity and the evolution of this identity in the face of political upheaval, war, and for some, eventual migration. By examining the identity politics and cultural implications of establishing collective memory, this project analyzes the pivotal role played by the concept of “imagined communities” (Anderson, 1983) – the idea that nations are socially constructed by constituents who perceive themselves as a group. Using a triangulation of existing literature, a content analysis of era-specific political rhetoric and collected oral histories, this study further examines the arbitrary lines drawn across the former Indian subcontinent, establishing such imagined communities and effectively rendering millions as prisoners of geography. The timeline for this longitudinal study includes: the end of the British Raj, the Partition of 1947, the Bengali Language Movement, and the Bangladeshi Liberation War of 1971, moving onwards into the twenty-first century. -

E-learning and wellbeing of those in poverty in Bangladesh By: Abureza M. Muzareba A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Social Sciences Department of Sociological Studies November 2016 i ABSTRACT Despite increased use of e-learning in formal learning, those in poverty in rural Bangladesh have inadequate idea of it and its usefulness in their lived reality. My research examines how e-learning can support to enhance their sense of wellbeing. I conducted a qualitative case study to understand: how capability development is related to e-learning, the resource requirements for e-learning, the roles of community, and social embeddedness aspects of e-learning. Drawing on the concept of capability approach, I developed my arguments based on the views shared by respective users of e-learning, project officials, government officials and experts in the areas of ICT and development. My research shows that, in principle, e-learning can foster rural people’s wellbeing by offering freedom of learning through ICT. In the process of learning and developing awareness, skills, and knowledge, e-learning can help them to deal with labour intensive lifestyles, poor economic status, gender inequalities, and limited institutional provisions for informal and formal means of learning. However, it depends on certain vital factors to work as a means of wellbeing in rural Bangladesh. These are: access to ICT, trust, local support, content, and funding. It needs a particular configuration of these factors with a specific arrangement of the related resources, in a setting where social embeddedness aspects are appropriately integrated.
