San Vincenzo is surrounded by a variety of small beautiful medieval towns and they are all worth a visit. Let’s start going south of San Vincenzo, direction . If you take Via della Principessa you will cross PARCO DI RIMIGLIANO, made of several hundred hectares of Mediterranean oak woods running along the coast line and the long free beaches. You can park the car next to the street. From June to September, it is possible to buy a parking card at our reception. Walking down one of the several tracks that lead to the sea you can reach the beach in a few minutes. The park is equipped with picnic areas, so that even during the hot hours you can enjoy the cool air under the huge trees. It is also equipped with public bathrooms and showers. Bars and restaurants are at entrances n.4, 8 and 10.

Traveling a few miles further south along Via Della Principessa, you will reach the / junction. BARATTI is a scenic circular gulf and POPULONIA is a small and charming medieval village. Situated on top of the hill it features a unique view onto the sea and the islands. In the ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK of Populonia and Baratti you can visit the Etruscan ruins. In this park you pay an entrance fee and then you can choose to follow a free guided tour or visit by yourself. In case you buy the ticket for the whole park, you can benefit from a discount reserved to our guests. We also suggest to keep this full park ticket since, if you decide to visit also Parco di San Silvestro in (and vice-versa) you'll get a 50% discount on the second park. (Please check opening days and times at reception or in the web-site indicated in the next pages)

Moving down the coast you reach the PARCO DELLA STERPAIA, located between Piombino and Follonica. Like the Rimigliano Park, this is a public park with free beaches. Crystalline clear water with white sand.

Leaving the coast behind, halfway between San Vincenzo and Campiglia we reach the open-air mining museum, PARCO MINERARIO DI SAN SILVESTRO. Here, too, you pay a ticket. You can choose between three main excursions: one is mainly a naturalistic path, while on the next, you drive with a guide and one of the special park-bus up to the medieval castle San Silvestro. On the last route a guide escorts you into the antique mine. It was originally build by the Etruscans, later rediscovered and used again until the end of the last century. A highlight for children: the ride with the orange park-train which even enters the mine for a short stretch. Once in a while you can attend to nice events for small children. Open from 10am to 7pm, closed on Monday.

Continuing on this street you encounter CAMPIGLIA MARITTIMA and , two pearls of medieval architecture. Strolling in the historic charged atmosphere it is easy to go back in time…

Turning towards the countryside, in the south of San Vincenzo you should not miss with Viale San Guido, the famous cypress - lined avenue and the town of .

At VENTURINA, the next town in the south of San Vincenzo resides the CALIDARIO, a natural lake, suited for children too, with warm water at circa 36°C ( 97°F). It is open every day from morning to evening, closed only from January 7th to February 7th In addition Calidario offers a two hour wellness path, only for adults, passing through the most different experiences: “Frigidarium” “Trepidarium” and “Calidarium” (similar to the Turkish bath). We have an agreement with Calidario, so remember to ask us for a discount coupon.

For those who love to relax, you will find some beautiful wellness & SPA resorts: Wellness Center Riva degli Etruschi, Garden SPA Cavalleggeri, Tombolo Talasso Resort and La Cerreta Terme di Sassetta (hotsprings). In the next pages you will find more informations about them. Young and adults will have lots of fun in the CAVALLINO MATTO in CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI, north of San Vincenzo. In this large amusement park you can spent a whole day. You can take discount tickets at our reception.

A more offbeat way to enjoy your leisure time is the GIARDINO SOSPESO in RIPARBELLA, the “Hanging Garden” park: breathtaking acrobatic courses through the treetops - different kind of courses where adults and children can move along in complete safety. Here you can try the “Instinctive Archery”, too. Ask us to “stamp” a brochure and you will get there a €.2 discount/person.

For those who love horses, there are handlings in the area, you'll find names and phone numbers in the next pages.

Another very appreciated place is PARCO GALLOROSE, it's a 3kms zoo-park in CECINA with 120 different species. It is settled in our Mediterranean bush and there are very nice trails that you can walk also with a stroller. Inside the park there is a typical tuscan restaurant, a picnic area and a playground for kids. The negative aspect is that, like in the other zoos, there are species that should be able to live in the native lands and not here, but this is our personal opinion. If you wish to have a walk downtown in SAN VINCENZO, we suggest to park in Via Aurelia Nord, above Via della Stazione. In fact, the parking there is free and through a pedestrian “passage” over the railways, you will arrive straight in the town center. Alternatively, there are plenty of paid parking in the center. The largest one is located below the “Marina di San Vincenzo”. White stripes: free parking. Blu stripes: paid parking. Yellow stripes: parking is prohibited.

Its mild climate, the characteristics of its natural environment as well as its centrality on the Tyrrhenian coast make San Vincenzo a place to spend your holidays all year round, not just during the summer. The coastal shoreline is composed of light very fine sand and extends for 12 km, fringed with the thick Mediterranean brush vegetation which stretches right down to the beach. There are plenty of free and fully equipped beaches starting from the Municipality of Castagneto Carducci to the North and extending southwards right down to the Municipality of Piombino with the promontory of Baratti and Populonia. Most of the fully equipped beaches and bathing establishments are in the town centre, whereas the longest free beach (about 8 km.) is inside the park of Rimigliano,a Nature Reserve on the southern side of San Vincenzo’s territory, which forms part of the Val di Cornia Park System. One of the features of the park is its marvelously unspoilt Mediterranean brush vegetation, traversed by way-marked trails stretching down to a beautiful broad shoreline in a wilderness setting. The town centre has a pleasure boat mooring harbor which has recently been enlarged. It is a perfect stopping place for those who enjoy pleasure boating and have been exploring the Tuscan archipelago. As well as the seaside, San Vincenzo also offers nature trails both inside the park of Rimigliano and in the picturesque hill hamlet of San Carlo, which was once a mining village and today is highly appreciated for its setting in the scenic landscape of the Val di Cornia hills. Over the last decade the development of “agriturismi” in the countryside has expanded the range of choice for tourists, integrating the traditional seaside holiday with the chance for nature lovers to relax in the enchanting landscape and offering plenty of opportunity to sample the home-grown food and wine of the area. The presence of sports centres and the way-marked and maintained nature trails have in recent years enhanced the attraction of San Vincenzo for sports-related tourism, in particular cycling, and guests will find innumerable occasions for engaging in sports during their stay. San Vincenzo’s central position on the Mediterranean coast allows those who decide to spend their vacation here easy and rapid access to the other tourist attractions and destinations of the area, such as the Val di Cornia Park System, which includes the park of Rimigliano. Particularly fascinating, and of nationwide importance, is the historical testimony represented by the archaeological park of Baratti and the archaeological mining park of San Silvestro, as well as the spectacular promontory of Populonia, all of which constitute veritable points of excellence within the national framework.

San Vincenzo is also not far from the historic medieval hill towns of Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci, as well as the beaches of the Nature Park of Sterpaia in the Municipality of Piombino and the health spa of in the Municipality of Campiglia Marittima. CRUCIFIX - Castagneto Carducci is famous for its SS Crocifisso church which contains a wooden cross, which is of great importance because is was made by a member of the Pisa School in 1400. Conserved in an enclosed shrine, it is taken out if its protective casing twice a year, on May 3 and September 14, and once every three years it is taken on the procession of the Triennial Festival. The work originally belonged to the San Colombano monastery, but when it and the adjacent church were destroyed, the crucifix miraculously remained intact.

According to legend, one day in October, a farmer found it under the rubble because the animals that the farmer was working with suddenly stopped and refused to continue walking. Thus, curious as what had happened, the farmer looked around the devastated area and found the cross under the rubble in good condition. It was later taken to the oratory of the SS Crocifisso church, where it can still be viewed today. In the church, which has a single nave and a bell-shaped façade, visitors are immediately greeted with an image of a wounded Christ upon entering.

There are also pictorial decorations that create a false marble base with geometric shapes. The ceiling has wood beams, also with decorations. The side walls are plastered and feature four windows, one of which is walled up. The church was built in 1587, but its semblance today is owed to the restoration carried out by Count Walfredo Della Gherardesca in 1922.

Pienza was realized by the request of Pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini), from whom the city’s name derives. Upon being named Pope in 1458, Pius began to dream up a new design for his native town, and entrusted his dream with Bernardo di Matteo Gambardelli, an apprentice of the famous architect and scientist Leon Battista Alberti. FOR INFORMATION AND RESERVATIONS Phone: +39 0565/226445 www.parchivaldicornia.it – [email protected] The Archaeological Park of Baratti and

Populonia

Stretching over 80 hectares between the slopes of the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti, it is presented as a real open-air museum, glittering with ferrous slag which show the impressiveness of the industrial Etruscan village.

The Park includes a significant part of the ancient town of Populonia, a unique Etruscan settlement built directly on the sea, with its necropolises, the calcarenite quarries and the industrial working quarters for iron coming from the hematite deposits on the Island of Elba.

The park is spread over various areas of visit which enable the visitor to appreciate the transformation of the scenery over the centuries. The wooded coast of the promontory overlooks the archipelago: since days of old the dark silhouettes of the islands including Elba and Corsica have constituted the picturesque scenes of a landscape of land and water. Indeed, up until the modern reclamations, the plain extending to the internal of the promontory of Piombino was a series of lakes and lagunas, rich with fish and swamp vegetation. This was the landscape of the 8th-9th Century B.C., when important houses were built on the Acropolis to accommodate the most ancient aristocracies of Populonia. From these houses there remains faint and picturesque traces on the summit of the acropolis, not distant from the monumental structures of another Populonia, the Roman one which around the 2nd Century B.C. built important temples, thermal spas and sanctuaries right in the heart of the city. A network of itineraries joins up the city of the houses and temples to the industrial city and the necropolises which lie on the first hills surrounding the inlet. As in ancient times, the routes follow the original roads, crossing the woods and the Mediterranean scrub and opening up to unexpected views alternating over the Gulf of Baratti or the open sea and the Island of Elba. One of these routes leads to another landscape, that of Medieval times. Among the woods of the promontory, the remains of the Benedictine monastery of San Quirico tell of a lost city and a renewed interest for the natural resources and minerals of the region. Distance from San Vincenzo: 14km/19 minutes. The Archaelogical Mines Park of San Silvestro

Situated behind Campiglia Marittima and the promontory of Piombino, it covers 450 hectares, and it contains unique examples of the mining and metallurgical cycle, from the Etruscan era to the present day. The routes for visiting encompass museums, mining tunnels, a Medieval village of miners and foundry-men founded around one thousand years ago (Rocca San Silvestro) and paths of historical, archaeological, geological and naturalistic interest. The Museum of Archaeology and Minerals, located in the Ticket Office building, houses an exhibition of useful minerals and rocks of the Campigliese and the display of some exhibits found during the digs of Rocca San Silvestro. From here the visit to the Park begins: an expert guide accompanies visitors in the Temperino Mine, to the discovery of the evolution of the techniques used for prospecting and extraction of minerals, and the beauty and charm of the underground world. Coming out of the Mine, there is a climb towards the area of the Earl Shaft, where the storyboards of the Museums of the Mining Machinery and the Miners tell the visitor of the last decades of the mining history, up until the mining crisis in 1976. The stories of the miners, captured on a video screened in the Morteo, the former canteen, introduce the visit of the Lanzi-Temperino Tunnel, where aboard a train, the journey of the minerals is retraced, from the mine of the Temperino Valley to the production installations of the Lanzi Valley. The train emerges at the mouth of a limestone quarry, a sign of the first re-conversion of the mining activities and opened by the Mining Company of Campiglia when the closure of the copper and lead mines was inevitable. Alighting from the train, the visitors overlook the installations which, made for the flotation of minerals, were re- converted into installations for the crushing of the limestone. The remains of Rocca San Silvestro, which stand majestically on the background of this valley, represent the heart of the Park.

Distance from San Vincenzo: 8km/11 minutes. Rimigliano Coastal and Natural Park

A strip of luxuriant green landscape, overlooking the sea, where the Mediterranean vegetation is particularly varied in constituent species, form and colour. The park extends over beaches and dunes where the bush has been shaped by sea breezes, and on to the shady forest dominated by holm oak and by maritime pine with their characteristic parasol- shaped tops. The Coastal Park of Rimigliano occupies the most southerly part of the Livorno Municipality territory of San Vincenzo, on the border with the Municipalities of Piombino and Campiglia Marittima.

It covers around 650 hectares between the sea and the Rome- railway line, and is spilt lengthways from north-west to south-east by the provincial road the Principessa (SP 23), connecting San Vincenzo to Piombino. The road divides the park into 2 areas: on one part (sea side) the wooded coastal strip with its system of dunes and the beach, on the other more extended section of the park, including the farming areas, the former lake area of Rimigliano, the varied wood with prevalently oak species which replaces the preceding pines. The protected coastal area covers an area of about 150 hectares, along about 6 kilometers of coast of depth varying from 200 to 500 mtrs. The park enjoys extremely favourable climactic conditions: the presence of the hilly range of Monte Calvi, to the east, protects the coast from the fresh continental winds, whilst the Promontory of Piombino, to the south and the Island of Elba to the west, reduces the strength of the maritime winds. The hot summer is eased by the constant presence of sea breezes. The beach, characterized by a system of protective dunes, is equipped with showers and public toilets positioned at specific points; it offers the oppor- tunity for a bathing experience comple- tely surrounded by nature, with the vista ranging from the vegetation of the promontory of Piombino, the tangle of shrubs sand-beaten by the wind which hits the beach, and the unmistakable light blue silhouette of the Tuscan archipelago of islands on the horizon. Dog Friendly. Pic-nic area.

Via della Principessa, San Vincenzo (LI) Natural Park

Covering 7000 hectares between the Valley of Cornia and Pecora, in the range of hills between Massa Marittima and Suvereto. These hills, of a medium height, are covered by woods, especially Holm-Oak, and represent a landscape of vegetation closely tied to the work of man, in particular to the production of coal and timber.

In the heart of the park, man has left his mark in the remains of the alum quarries and the Napoleonic mining village which was founded by Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, Napoleon's sister.

Also of great interest is the wildlife of the park, for the notable number of hoofed animals running free in the area: wild boar, fallow deer and roe deer.

Within the Park, covering two provinces, occupying the territory of the two bordering provinces, Livorno and , there are two natural state reserves: the (440hectares) and Poggio Tre Cancelli (100 hectares). Provincial Park (L.R.49/1995) Suvereto (LI), Campiglia M.ma (LI), Piombino (LI), Massa Marittima (GR), Follonica (GR).

Distance from San Vincenzo: 35km/48min. Sterpaia Natural and Coastal Park

Natural Park of the Sterpaia is stretching over 296 hectares between the Gulf of Piombino and Follonica.

It shows the typical ancient landscape of Maremma: a very unique forest close to several sandy beaches, where you'll also find several bathing establishments offering lots of services.

This stretch of coast is very suitable for families with small children because the sandy coast slopes very gradually down to the sea and there is a wide area of shallow water where children can play safely.

Via della Geodetica, Piombino (LI)

Distance from San Vincenzo: 24km/25minutes. Archeological Museum of Populonia's Territory

The Museum is an integral part of the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia project, and is the main show-case for the network of Parks of the Val di Cornia. With the aid of attractive reconstructions of ancient landscapes, activities and settings, it explains the changes brought about by man's presence on the promontory from prehistory to present times. The Museum is housed in the Palazzo Nuovo in the historic centre of Piombino. The Palazzo was built in the early 19th century for the ruling couple Felice and Elisa Bonaparte (Napoleon's sister), within the fortified "Cittadella" which Leonardo da Vinci had been involved in designing. It laid out over 1800 sqm on three floors. The museum exhibits more than 3000 artifacts including prehistoric tools, finds excavated in Populonia's Etruscan cemeteries, and Roman objects.

Outstanding among these latter is the silver amphora found in 1968 in the sea between Baratti and San Vincenzo, a masterpiece of great intrinsic and artistic value. The scientific exhibition project, handled by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Siena, has focused much attention on the teaching and communication aspects of the scientific data.

The visitor follows a route tracing historical development interpreted on the basis of the relationship between man, territory and resources, among which the theme of iron production, past and present, assumes a particularly important role.

San Vincenzo's trekking trails "Il Corbezzolo" and "Il Ginepro" trekking trail

The routes described in this map involve the whole municipality of San Vincenzo. Moreover, they link the sea to the so called massif of Monte Calvi, which is 646 high and therefore the second tallest chain of the area. The first one is Monte Capanne in the Island of Elba.

These routes are particularly suitable for hiking, because they reach an area endowed with a wild and unblemished nature. This wonderful background surrounds many historical settlements which date back to the Etruscan time, the Medieval one and the period of the last mining activities (1900).

In addition to this, the map marks two access doors to the routes which link the neighboring eastern municipalities of San Carlo area to the ones of Castagneto Carducci, Sassetta, Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima; the southern ones (the last part of the Rimigliano coastal Park) to the municipality of Piombino and the Populonia headland.

The area offers a great variety of routes which can be easily be planned and divided by more than one day of hiking. Hikers can also take advantage of the several stopping places and accommodations which can be found throughout the trails. The two routes make it possible to reach two different Parks: the Archaeological Mine Park of San Silvestro (city of Campiglia Marittima) and the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia (city of Piombino). The entrance is not free; the two Parks belong to the Val di Cornia Park system which therefore includes the Coastal Park of Rimigliano (San Vincenzo), the Natural Park of Sterpaia (Piombino), the Montioni Park (Suvereto). Route N°1 (green one)

Il Corbezzolo (Arbutus berry) Via delle Rocce (Rocky way)

Laid out for: bridle track, biking, mountain bike Route length: 10 km Travelling time: 3 hours from San Vincenzo to the Buca del Serpente (Snake Pit) Difficulty level: low from the beginning until San Carlo. High from San Carlo to the ridge peak of the Snake (Buca del Serpente). Arrival: western crest of Monte Calvi.

General features of the trail and territory

The route starts from the northern part of San Vincenzo and winds across the so called Valle delle Rozze (Rozze Valley). The landscape of the valley is the famous Mediterranean “macchia”, the typical forest composed of holm oak, bitter oak and oak trees, brushes of arbutus berry, ash trees. The path gradually rises over until it reaches the residential district of San Carlo, where it is possible to walk towards the eastern side, reaching the routes number 3 and 4 (Castagneto Carducci). It is also possible to enter the gateway to the secondary paths that belongs to the municipalities of San Vincenzo, Castagneto Carducci, Sassetta and Campiglia Marittima.

On the right handside the path takes to the San Carlo town, which is a typical example of independent, working-class village. It was built from the Solvay Society around 1930. The village is endowed with a peaceful landscape: its pine forest follows the coasts’ borders and finally reach the city of Massa Marittima. After San Carlo the most interesting part of the route begins; its landscape is completely different from the one in the first part. Here hikers face the climbing of the Buca del Serpente (Snake Pit, 420 m. on the sea level). Once the peak is reached, the effort is worthwhile: the landscape which surrounds the Snake pits ranges over the headland of Populonia and the Tuscan archipelago islands. The vegetation itself changes abruptly and becomes shrubby because of the calcareous nature of the land. Here we can find shorter plants like the mastic tree, the broom, the holm oak and bitter oak trees. Among the various kind of flowers which bloom in this area, the most interesting ones are the orchids, in particular the Wild Orchid from Monte Calvi which belongs to the Ginandre family. In a so severe and wild environment, even the local fauna could survive throughout the centuries and maintain its peculiarities. The wild boar is the most important symbol of the area and Maremma, the utter King of the land. On the other hand, here live other animals like the deer, the fallow deer, the fox, the porcupine. There are many migratory birds like the green woodpecker, the jay, the wood-pigeon, the robin, the blackbird. Birdwatchers can also admire more particular kind of birds like the buzzard and the hawk. This area is enclosed among the districts of San Vincenzo, Campiglia Marittima, Castagneto Carducci, Sassetta, Suvereto and Piombino. The peculiar characteristics of the land make this area very important. Thanks to its mineralogical features it belongs to the so called system. The most important ores are the chalcopyrite, the limonite, the silver-bearing galena and the cassiterite. They were essential for the production of copperplate, lead, silver, iron and tin. Along the route are situated several grottos and caves. They are usually found in the higher parts of the path and the most interesting are the already mentioned Buca del Serpente and the Buca del Grillo (Grasshopper Pit). The former is the bigger one: its diameter is 10 x 5 m and its depth is 95 m. Moreover, it is endowed with a 45° inclination on its western side.

Route features

The Acquaviva district belongs to San Vincenzo. The route starts exactly from here. (meeting point: kiosk next to the Anas house). Walking towards the eastern side it is possible to reach an unsurfaced road; after 1 km there is the first resting zone for horses (Campo di Orlando district). After another km the road turns into a dirt patch until it reaches the crossroad next to the Solvay cave. From this point hikers have two choices: going on towards the Castagneto Carducci and Sassetta’s routes (eastern hand side) or turning right (southern hand side), crossing San Carlo and reaching the municipal road of San Bartolo for 500 m. Keeping the course towards San Vincenzo, they must reach the Residence “La Muccheria-Poggio ai Santi” and turn left, following the southern handside once again. After another 200 m they have to turn right (south-eastern hand side), shortly reaching the hut situated in the Terre Rosse (Red Lands) locality, in the Valle dei Manienti. Taking the eastern handside and following the path on the left, the route continues along the bottom of the valley, just below the Rocca di San Silvestro (San Silvestro fortress). The path abruptly turns left (northern handside) and here begins the most difficult part of the hiking. After 500 m, during which the climbing is quite complex, the Buca del Grillo (Grashopper Pit) is reached. Proceeding on the north-eastern hand side, hikers meet the “Vallino”, a halting place with a wooden table and then the Buca del Serpente (Snake Pit), after turning right and facing another high climbing. Unfortunately the route ends at this point. The land belongs to privates and it is impossible to cross it. The only thing possible is going back to the Buca del Grillo and turning left. After 300 m the route splits in two directions. Hikers can turn left (south-western hand side) and reach the Manienti peak, going back to the Terre Rosse hut after a light descent. On the other hand, they can turn right (north-western hand side) and head down the San Carlo district.

The Rocca di San Silvestro is a ruined castle which dates back to the Medieval Age. Before 1000 it was called Castelnuovo. Later on its name turned into Castel Moncalvo and Rocca a Palmento, until it was given the actual name. The castle, that also had the function of a fortress, was abandoned at the end of 1300 and was the object of attention during an important excavation campaign in the 80s. Nowadays, the Rocca can be visited. It belongs to the Archaeological Mines Park of San Silvestro, which was officially opened in 1996 and is part of the Val di Cornia Parks system.

Route N°2 (light blue)

Il Ginepro (the Juniper) Via delle Dune (the Dune Road)

Lay out for: bridle track, biking, mountain bike Route length: 8 km Travelling time: 2 hours Difference in height: 140 m Difficulty level: low Starting point: Terre Rosse hut Arrival: Torre Nuova ditch

General features of the trail and territory

The route plunges deep into the country during its first part (3 km) and runs along the Masseto and Prunicce woods. Then, it reaches the Parco costiero di Rimigliano (Rimigliano coastal Park), which stretches for 6 km. The Park is endowed with sandy shores and its typical underbrush which is located in the so called Alta Maremma (High Maremma), especially in Tombolo. In this district, immediately near the sandy shore, there are many dunes covered myrtle and juniper brushes as well as many types of pine trees.Among the flowers, the most representative one is the sea lily. Beyond the dunes the “macchia mediterranea” (Mediterranean scrub) spreads its luxuriance. Its most important trees are pine nuts, oak and holm oak trees. The underbrush is characterized by under brushes of wild olives, lentisks and phyllireas.

Route features

The starting point of the route is anything but the extension of the previous one described in this map, the so called “Corbezzolo”. From the Terre Rosse hut, the path smoothly slopes down for 700 m and borders the Etruscan Mines ruins (which date back to the first part of 900) on the left handside. It then reaches the provincial road. From there, hikers can turn towards Campiglia Marittima (eastern hand side) and walk for about 200 m. Then, they should follow the south-western hand side and walk in the direction of Palmentello. After 500 m, an unsurfaced road on the right is reached. Walking along the Masseto woods, the route meets the SS1, the Strada Statale Aurelia (Aurelia main road). Afterwards, hikers must turn left towards Via di Caduta and follow it for about 300 m over the roadbed. After another bending on the left, they must follow a holding farm road, where the second halting point of the bridle track is located. After 700 m an underpass which takes to the Rimigliano Park is reached. Following the signs inside the Park itself, hikers can walk along the unsurfaced road of “Cavalleggeri” for about 5 km and eventually, the entrance of the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia is reached.

Recommended clothing and equipments

Long trousers, long sleeves-shirt, trekking shoes. Light backpack with: a raincoat, a water bottle (1. L capacity), a flick knife, a light rope (4-5 m of length), repellent. During the most scorching months (July, August), a light and nourishing diet is recommended, as well as sodium salts or tablets and other food supplements.

“Walking” and “contact with the land” are synonyms. Tracks and trails tell us about moments or centuries of slow movements. In the era of “no time” a simple or a hard walk is the easiest way to be aware that time does exist, that sit seems to elude us from hands but that it is firmly beneath our feet.

And so walking on the paths of the Costa degli Etruschi means sharing routes which for centuries accompanied woodsmen, charcoal-burners, millers, poachers, poets and shepherds. In addition to hiking boots and a map you should take along a free mind, ready to be filled by the large spaces in this territory….
