M 28. August 2008 wurde Festspielleiter Wolfgang Wagner in einer bewegenden Feier auf der Probebühne VI geehrt und verabschiedet. »Wir verbeugen uns vor Ihnen heiter in dankbarer Verbunden heit, Freund schaft und Liebe« , sagte Pressesprecher Peter Emmerich bei seiner Laudatio. ASeit 1951, dem Beginn von »Neu-Bayreuth«, leitete Wolfgang Wagner zusam - men mit seinem Bruder Wieland die Bayreuther Festspiele. Nach dem frühen Tod seines Bruders 1966 stand Wolfgang 42 Jahre lang allein in der Verant- wortung und prägte die Festspiele in einzigartiger Weise. Für die Mitarbeiter, Künstler und Freunde der Bayreuther Festspiele sei Wolfgang Wagner »Prinzipal, Chef und nicht zuletzt auch eine Vaterfigur« ge we - sen, »keine von übermenschlicher oder gar furchteinflößender Dimension, viel - mehr das genaue Gegenteil, nämlich zutiefst menschlich und verständnisvoll, um den einzelnen nicht minder besorgt als ums Ganze« , sagte Peter Emmerich. Chor und Orchester unter der Leitung von Christian Thielemann brachten mit La Descente de la courtille ein Auftragswerk des Großvaters von Wolfgang Wagner zu Gehör. Danach konnten die Gäste Kostüme aus den letzten Jahr- zehnten bewundern; unter anderem das Gewand des Wotan von 1951, mehrere Eva-Kostüme aus Wolfgang Wagners »Meistersinger«-Inszenierungen, Kostüme Dr. Karl Gerhard Schmidt beim Setzen der Eiche, 20. November 2008. Kundrys, der Blumenmädchen und die Hose des »Lohengrin«-Kostüms von Wolfgang Wind gassen. Und am Ende küßte unter dem Hallo der Anwesenden Brünnhilde Deborah Polaski ihren Siegfried Wolfgang Schmidt wach. Der zweite Teil der Verabschiedung fand nach der letzten Aufführung des »Parsifal« auf der Hauptbühne des Festspielhauses statt. Nachdem Wolfgang Wagner vom Publikum mit minutenlangem Applaus und Ovationen verab - schiedet wurde, hielt der bayerische Ministerpräsident Dr. Günther Beckstein, der in Begleitung des bayerischen Kunstministers Dr. Thomas Goppel erschie - nen war, eine eindrucksvolle Laudatio auf den scheidenden Prinzipal. Das Fest spielorchester unter der Leitung von Christian Thielemann spielte das Vorspiel des 3. Aktes von »Rienzi«, und der Leiter des Festspielchores Eberhard Friedrich dirigierte den Eingangschoral aus dem 1. Akt der »Meistersinger von Nürnberg« mit einer hymnischen Umdichtung auf Wolfgang Wagner. Der Aus- klang fand auf der Probebühne I mit Freunden und Künstlern statt, unter ihnen die vier Ring-Regisseure Patrice Chéreau, Tankred Dorst, Jürgen Flimm und Alfred Kirchner. Auch die Gesellschaft der Freunde von Bayreuth bringt Wolfgang Wagner unser aller Dankbarkeit und Verbundenheit zum Ausdruck. Zu seinen Ehren

Natürlich hoffen wir, daß Sie uns ebenso Ihr Vertrauen entgegenbringen wie unserem Vater, um unsere langjährigen Beziehungen nicht allein fortleben zu lassen, sondern noch enger zu gestalten.

Since 1st September, we have assumed joint responsibility for the Bayreuth Festival and are delighted at the clear vote in our favour by the Council of the Foundation. We know that there are some major tasks ahead of us, since our principal duty is to guide the Festival to a sound and successful future. In pursuit of this goal, it is of course our intention to continue working along the lines of the best Bayreuth traditions, but at the same time we shall not be afraid to introduce some new ideas as well. We feel particular bonds of friendship with you and realise that we are very fortunate to have so many faithful and active patrons for the Festival at our side. We of course hope that you will place as much confidence in us as you did in our father, so that we do not just continue our long-standing relationship, but make the bonds even closer in future.

Naturellement, nous espérons mériter votre confiance autant que notre père, afin non pas seulement de laisser se poursuivre notre longue relation mais d’en resserrer encore les liens.

Begrüßung durch den Vorstand

ER stellvertretende Vorstandsvorsitzende, Dr. Georg Freiherr von Waldenfels, begrüßt die zahlreichen Mitglieder der DGesellschaft der Freunde, seine Vorstandskollegen Dr. Karl Gerhard Schmidt und Prof. Hans-Ludwig Grüschow, Ehrenmitglied Dr. Ewald Hilger, den Kuratoriumsvorsitzenden Dr. Heribert Johann, den Regisseur Stefan Herheim und den Dramaturgen Dr. Alexander Meier-Dörzenbach, die Mitarbeiter der Bayreuther Festspiele sowie die Damen und Herren des Kuratoriums der Gesellschaft. Dr. von Waldenfels stellt fest, daß die Mitgliederversammlung nach §14 der Satzung form- und fristgerecht einberufen worden ist. Er bittet vor dem Einstieg in die Tagesordnung um eine Gedenkminute für Gudrun Wagner, die am 28. November 2007 unerwartet gestorben war. Er würdigt Frau Wagner als engste und vertrauteste Mitarbeiterin ihres Mannes und spricht Katharina und Wolfgang Wagner sein Mitgefühl aus. Die Gesellschaft der Freunde von Bayreuth werde das Andenken an Gudrun Wagner in Ehren halten.

Harald Saame, Königstein/ Ts. Wir haben aber mit den ersten Jugendmitgliedern Georg Schäfer, Schweinfurt eine Probe von »Parsifal« besucht. Dort hielt der Dr. Karl Gerhard Schmidt, Neudrossenfeld Dramaturg Dr. Meier-Dörzenbach einen Einfüh - SKF GmbH, Schweinfurt rungsvortrag. Auch die Generalprobe von »Siegfried« Käserei Bayreuth, Bayreuth konnten die Jungen Freunde besuchen. Beide Ver - anstaltungen waren ein großer Erfolg. Dr. von Waldenfels bedankt sich bei den Mitgliedern, die Karten an die Geschäftsstelle zurückgegeben haben. Damit können noch viele Mitglieder von der Warteliste berücksichtigt werden.

Desweiteren werden Zuwahl ins noch 20.000 =C für die Richard-Wagner-Gesamtausgabe im Jahr 2008 letztmalig fällig. Kuratorium Dr. Schmidt weist darauf hin, daß im Jahr 2007 ein Vorschuß auf den Spiel- betrieb 2008 in Höhe von 200.000 =C von der Gesellschaft bezahlt wurde. Da die derversammlungen eingeführt öffentlichen Zuschußgeber nach wie vor für das Jahr 2008 nicht bereit waren, wer den soll. ihre Zuschüsse zu erhöhen, hatte sich der Vorstand noch einmal bereit erklärt, das Defizit auszugleichen. Dr. Schmidt bittet die Mitglieder um Verständnis, daß dieses Defizit komplett von der Gesellschaft übernommen wird. Es sei wichtig, daß die Ära Wolfgang Wagner auch finanziell geordnet abgeschlossen werde und die neue Festspiel- leitung mit einer soliden finanziellen Grundlage ihre Arbeit beginnen könne. Dr. Schmidt bedankt sich für den Applaus der Mitglieder, den er als Zustim- mung wertet. Er berichtet, daß auf unser Bitten hin inzwischen Dr. Roland Felber, der langjährige Verwaltungsleiter der Bayerischen Staatsoper München, die mit den Mitwirkenden abgeschlossenen Verträge, die Gagen und die aktu - elle finan zielle Situation der Festspiele geprüft habe. Laut Dr. Felbers Ein - schät zung sind die Verhältnisse der Festspiele in Ordnung. Nur wenige Ver - besse rungs vorschläge wurden gemacht. Die Frage aus dem Mitgliederkreis, ob die Produktion »Parsifal«, die sehr aufwendig erscheint, bereits im Budget enthalten sei, wird bejaht.

HE Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr. Georg Freiherr von Waldenfels, welcomed the numerous mem - T bers of the Society of Friends, his colleagues on the Board, Dr. Karl Gerhard Schmidt and Prof. Hans-Ludwig Grüschow, the honorary member Dr. Ewald Hilger, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Heribert Johann, the producer Stefan Herheim and the dramaturge Dr. Alexander Meier-Dörzenbach, the members of the Bayreuth Festival and the members of the Society’s Board of Trustees. Dr. von Waldenfels noted that the Annual General Meeting had been duly convened in good time pursuant to section 14 of the Statutes. Before turning to the agenda, he asked the Meeting for a minute’s silence in commemoration of Gudrun Wagner, who passed away unexpectedly on 28 th November, 2007. He paid tribute to Mrs. Wagner as her husband’s assistant and closest confidante and expressed his deepest condolences to Katharina and Wolfgang Wagner. The Society of Friends of Bayreuth would always honour the memory of Gudrun Wagner.

Festival tickets unfortunately cannot yet be paid for by credit card, since the Bayreuth Festival does not accept payment by credit card. Dr. Schmidt added that in 2008, the Society was also sharing in the financing of the exhibition “Wer ist der Gral” (“Who is the Grail” in the Margraves’ Opera House to the tune of =C 20,000, which was being organised by Haus Wahnfried and the Bayreuth Festival, funded above all by the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, a final instalment of =C 20,000 for the complete edition of Richard Wagner’s works would fall due in 2008. Dr. Schmidt pointed out that an advance contribution of =C 200,000 to Festival operations in 2008 had been paid by the Society in 2007. In the Autumn of 2007, there had been signs of liquidity problems at the Bayreuth Festival, and so the Society had stepped into the breach. Dr. Schmidt went on to explain that it had already been reported at the 2007 Annual General Meeting that a deficit of =C 400,000 was expected for 2008, which the Society intended to cover. In Autumn 2007, the Board of Management asked to be allowed to inspect the accounts of the Bayreuth Festival as per 30 th Septem- ber, 2007. They revealed a deficit of =C 500,000, which the Society had not expect - ed. In the many years when Wolfgang Wagner had had the management of the Festival firmly under control, nothing like that had ever occurred. There were a wide range of reasons for this deficit: above all, it was due to the intransigent attitude of the state authorities, who had not increased their con - tributions since 2004. Then there were the general cost increases. The budget for 2007 had been planned with far too little leeway for contingencies. In addition, our Society had remitted =C 1 million for the Ring in 2006, but had promised up to a total of =C 1.3 million. Following our Society’s transfer of the remainder for the 2006 Ring, amounting to =C 300,000, part of the deficit has been paid off in the meantime. After the experience with the accounts as per 30 th September, 2007, Dr. Schmidt reported that he had requested the Festival management to revise the budget for 2008 again. After that, the deficit for 2008 rose from =C 400,000 to 1 million. In March 2007, the Society had already promised to make good the 400,000 euros deficit from the original budget. Since the state authorities were still refusing to increase their contributions for 2008, the Board of Management had stated its willingness to make good the deficit for the last time. Dr. Schmidt expressed his regrets that this deficit was now having to be taken on by the Society completely, and hoped that the members would understand. It was important that the Wolfgang Wagner era should be brought to an orderly conclusion in financial respects, too, and that the new Festival management could begin its work on a sound financial footing. Dr. Schmidt thanked the members for their applause, which he interpreted as consent. He reported that, at our request, Dr. Felber, the administrative director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, had in the meantime examined the con - tracts concluded with the performers, looking at their fees and the Festival’s cur - rent financial situation. According to Dr. Felber, the Festival’s affairs are in order in this respect. Only a small number of suggestions for improvements were made. A question asked by one of the members as to whether the “Parsifal” produc - tion was already included in the budget, because it seemed very lavish, was answered in the affirmative.

New election to the Board of Trustees

N behalf of the Board of Management and the Board of Trustees, Dr. von Waldenfels proposed two gentlemen for election O to the Board of Trustees: Patrick Schwarz-Schütte, an entrepreneur from Düsseldorf and Marc Sommer, an entrepreneur from Mülheim. Dr. von Waldenfels asked for the vote to be taken by a show of hands. Since there were no abstentions or votes against, he welcomed the two gentlemen to the Board of Trustees and expressed his pleasure that it would now be possible to work together for the benefit of the Festival. In response to a request by a member that some information be provided about the 12 work of the Board of Trustees, because the members knew nothing at all about it, Dr. von Waldenfels said that this would be introduced at future Annual General Meetings. E vice-président de l’Association, Georg von Waldenfels, souhaite la bienvenue aux nombreux adhérents de la Société des LAmis, ainsi qu’à ses collègue du conseil d’administration, Karl Gerhard Schmidt et Hans-Ludwig Grüschow, à Ewald Hilger, membre d’honneur, au président du curatorium Heribert Johann, au metteur en scène Stefan Herheim et à son assistant, Alexander Meier-Dörzenbach, au personnel du Festival de Bayreuth et à Mesdames et Messieurs les membres du curatorium de la société. Il constate la validité de forme et de délais de convocation de l’Assemblée générale selon le §14 des statuts de la Société. Avant de passer à l’ordre du jour, il demande une minute de silence à a mémoire de Gudrun Wagner, décédée subitement le 28 novembre 2007. Il rend hommage à Mme Wagner en tant que collaboratrice la plus proche de son mari et exprime sa sympathie à Katharina et Wolfgang Wagner, souhaitant que la Société des Amis de Bayreuth sache garder et honorer le souve - nir de Gudrun Wagner.

Die Veröffentlichungen der Gesell schaft werden sehr positiv bewertet: Der Jahresbericht wird zu 89,5% mit gut und sehr gut bewertet, das Sommerheft Post aus Bayreuth mit 86,1% und die Internetseite mit 49,1%, wobei diese bei über 34,3% noch nicht bekannt ist. Das Werk heft der Bayreuther Festspiele zur jeweiligen Neuproduktion, das wir gemeinsam mit dem Jahres be richt versenden, wird von 86,1% der Ant wortenden als gut und sehr gut be zeichnet.

ORG ER Besuch der Arbeitsprobe »Parsifal« hat mich sehr fasziniert, weil man dort nicht nur vor der Premiere eine Menge über die neue Inszenierung erfährt, son - dern auch sieht, mit welchem Aufwand eine Produktion verbunden ist; in der DGeneralprobe bekommt man lange nicht so viel mit. Die anderen Jugendmitglieder und ich hatten die Gelegenheit, sich wie richtige »Insider« zu fühlen, da wir uns nach der Probe mit dem Dramaturgen, Herrn Meier-Dörzenbach, in der Kantine über die Inszenierung unterhalten durften. Da saßen wir gleich neben Herrn Herheim und Herrn Gatti. Vor dem Besuch der Probe hatte Herr Meier-Dörzenbach einen Diavortrag über die Inszenierung gehalten – das war für uns eine einmalige Sache! Die Oper »Parsifal« war für mich schon immer das schwerste Werk von Richard Wagner, aber nach dem Vortrag habe ich auch endlich diese Oper richtig verstanden! Sehr überrascht war ich, daß sich viele Bekannte und Freunde genauso wie ich für das Fest spielhaus und die Musik von Richard Wagner interessieren, und gefreut hat mich auch, daß man dort auch wirklich ernst genommen wird und alle ganz nett und offen sind. Auch mein Cousin durfte mit zum Picknick in der Generalprobenpause von »Siegfried«, obwohl er kein Mitglied der Gesellschaft ist. Sogar Herr Dr. Schmidt, der Vorsitzende, kam zu allen Veranstaltungen. Ich finde die Jugendgesellschaft großartig und möchte mich bei allen, die diese mit viel Mühe organisiert haben, insbesondere bei Frau Besser-Eichler, herzlichst bedanken.

I found the visit to the working rehearsal for “Parsifal” absolutely fascinating, because it gave us an opportunity not only to learn a great deal about the new production before the première, but also to see the amount of work that goes into a production; at the dress rehearsal, this is not so much the case by any means. The other Young Members and I had a chance to feel like real “insiders”, since we were able to talk to the dramaturge, Mr Meier-Dörzenbach, about the production in the canteen after the rehearsal. We found ourselves sitting next to Mr. Herheim and Mr. Gatti. Before we attended the rehearsal, Mr. Meier-Dörzenbach gave us a slide presentation about the pro - duction - that was a really unique opportunity! I had always found “Parsifal” the most difficult work by Richard Wagner, but after the lecture I at last understood this opera as well! I was very surprised to discover that many of my friends and relatives are just as interested as I am in the Festspielhaus and Richard Wagner’s music, and I was also pleased that we were taken really seriously and that every - one was nice and open. My cousin was also allowed to join us on the picnic in the interval during the Siegfried dress rehearsal even though he is not a member of the Society. Dr. Schmidt, the Chairman, also came to all the events. I find the Young Members’ Society a splendid idea and would like to thank everyone who has put so much effort into organising it, especially Mrs. Besser-Eichler.

Assister à la répétition de travail de Parsifal a été pour moi quelque chose de fascinant, non seulement parce qu’on y apprend beaucoup de choses sur la mise en scène, en avant-premiè - re, mais aussi parce qu’on peut mesurer le travail que nécessite une production, ce que ne permet pas la répétition générale. Avec les autres jeunes membres de l’Association, j’ai pu me sentir en véritable « insider », en ce sens qu’à la suite de la répétition, nous avons pu discuter dans la cantine avec M. Meier-Dörzenbach, l’assistant de la mise en scène. Nous étions même assis à côté de MM. Herheim et Gatti. Avant d’assister à la répétition, nous avions eu un exposé avec des diaposi - tives sur la mise en scène, par M. Meier-Dörzenbach – pour nous quelque chose d’unique ! L’opéra Parsifal a toujours été pour moi l’œuvre la plus difficile de Richard Wagner, mais après la conférence, j’ai pu enfin vraiment comprendre cet opéra ! J’ai été très supris par le fait que beaucoup de mes amis et connaissances, comme moi, s’intéressent beaucoup au Festspielhaus et à la musique de Richard Wagner. J’ai été aussi très touché d’être pris au sérieux et que les gens aient fait preuve de tant de gentillesse et d’ouverture. Mon cousin a eu lui aussi la possibilité d’assister au pique-nique de l’entr’acte de la répétition générale de Siegfried, bien qu’il ne soit pas membre de la Société. M. Schmidt, le président, est venu à toutes les manifestations. Pour moi, les Jeunes Amis de Bayreuth sont quelque chose de formidable et je souhaite remercier profondément ici tous ceux qui se sont donnés la peine de l’organiser, notamment Mme Besser-Eichler.
