This book is a very English "Ozarkalligrapher", A personal remembrance of Raymond DaBoll, a favourite calligrapher, a sort of still-life of the art of calligraphy as it was around 1974, before its current revival. It is all calligraphed in a slightly angular, rather cramped but consistent Italic. There are many small examples and reproductions of his work wich enable us to see how calligraphy has developed, especially in advertising, since 1974. This book makes a very entertaining and pleasant evening’s read for anyone with aspirations as a calligrapher. (R. Turpin) PIERPONT MORGAN Italian Manuscript Painting 1984 (?) (editor) Speedball Textbook, Hunt Mfg., Philadelphia 1984 (?) 96 pages The Speedball Textbook is a good reference book for English 21stEdition students and professionals. All the classic alphabets are presented with a lot of information and illustration. If all you had is enough money to buy only one of these books though, certainly buy the 21st Edition. Not only is the format more spacious, making the book easier to skim through, but the examples of artwork are more varied, more interesting, and definitely (in my opinion) much better. Though quite a few of pages in the 20th Edition are repeated in th 21st, still, there is enough chamge in the 2nd to make it the better book (there are 14 years between the date of the 3rd revision of the 1st and the second edition). However, this is not to say that the 20th Edition is not a good book, nor worth looking at. It is very interesting to see the type of calligraphic art work presented; the examples are good. The quality of both is good (better in the later edition). All levels. (C. She recommends calligraphing everything from shopping lists to spice labels in the kitchen, allots some 16 pages to designing monograms, and the balance of the book to bookmarks, bookplates and useful quotations. Her materials section and hints on getting calligraphic work, pricing it and getting paid for it are all excellent. This is a good guide for beginning calligraphers. It seems to be geared to people with absolutely no ideas of their own! (R. Turpin)

Like Margaret Shepherd’s other books, this one is very nicely designed. Her instructions are clear although this reviewer does find some of her alphabets to be somewhat contrived. This book includes a chapter on decorated initials wich provides many good ideas for the amateur calligrapher. It is followed by a very useful chapter on layout. This is a great book for beginners and intermediates. (K. Here is a book English The review from a calligrapher who rarely any more buys calligraphy books! Frederick Wong explains in his introduction: "...the thrust here is toward the composition of letters, the esthetics of assembling letters into words, lines, pages, and, finally into the designed unit." I bought the book, not only because it is beautifully conceived and laid out, but simply because he filled many of the information gaps that I have been impatiently waiting to fill; i.e. a concise history, a comprehensive survey of available materials (American and European) , reed and quill cutting, a paper survey, drafting equipment, a letter anatomy, and extensive design techniques including the altering and decorative of majuscules. And then, finally, a discussion of the use of color and reproduction techniques available. The information is useful and clear to the layperson, but also offers a variety of advanced technical details ("... for gold to be drawn out to the required thinness--1/3000,000 of an inch"!). Beautiful illustrations offer a great range of styles and viewpoints. It is not an intruction book for those who have never picked up the pen. The section of alphabets includes clear, basics models (modern uncial, half-uncial, carolingian, versals, gothic, humanist bookhand, roman majuscules, chancery cursive, and copperplate); and gives a résumé of tips, history, and construction for each alphabet, rather than pen strokes and how-to-do-it breakdown. And, yes, he does specialize in Chinese characters! (D. Davida) WONG, Wucius Principles of Two- Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York 1972 Dimensional Design

The tips presented are more for drawing the letters than working with a broad-edged pen. Each alphabet is analyzed in term of structure, proportion and weight. Several variations are presented. In my opinion, this book is certainly worth looking at - there is a nice chapter on Handy Hints, also much discussion on layout. A neophyte would find this book too detailed - this book is more suitable to someone who has already been working with letters, and is interested in this level of information that is presented. (C.
