9 Welcome to the 11th Harwich International Shanty Festival!

Another year has passed and here we are at the 2016 Shanty Festival already. Much work has gone on behind the scenes to ensure yet another lively, vibrant and entertaining festival for this October. We have booked a fantastic selection of Shanty Singers and Crews for you, with a range of talents and there will be more venues and events than ever before. With concerts, pub sessions, workshops, talks, street theatre, pirates, barge trips, maritime crafts and even a festival train there is plenty to entertain everyone. Many of the events are free of charge and as many as possible are accessible to all. Our aims remain the same: to celebrate Harwich town’s important maritime history, to promote the, now growing, little known tradition of shanties and songs and to provide affordable or free entertainment to the people of Harwich and visitors to the festival. We are proud to continue our links with overseas crews and in 2016 we have shanty singers from Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Finland, and the in addition to the many Shanty Crews from all over the U.K We are delighted to welcome back old friends and keen to introduce new ones. Of course none of this would be possible without the support of our various sponsors, the festival venues, the hard working committee and the local community. Thanks go to all of those. We hope that whether you are a newcomer to this festival or an old timer, you will enjoy the wide variety of entertainment which is on offer, join in with at least some of the activities and return to us in the future.

1 Traditional Sea Shanties Background Information

Sea shanties are traditional shipboard working songs. Some date back to the fifteenth century, although most surviving examples date from the nineteenth, or occasionally, the eighteenth, century. In the days when the only source of energy on board ships and sailing vessels was manpower, these rhythmical songs served a very practical purpose; the rhythm of the songs synchronizing the work of the on board as they worked at their repetitive tasks. There was also a social purpose as the songs relieved boredom and encouraged a sense of camaraderie. So important was the shanty considered as an aid to working, that a Shantyman was often employed on board vessels to co-ordinate the men’s work.

Most shanties are divided into a “call and response” formula, where the Shantyman sings out one line and the crew respond with another, but different shanties were used to cover different types of work on board ship. Thus a long slow job such as hauling on a rope or would call for a long, measured Halyard Shanty. Turning the to haul up the called for a smoother and more regular Capstan Shanty, pumping the bilges required a Pumping Shanty – and so on. There were also many songs which the sailors would sing for their own amusement when not working and these are usually grouped together as Forebitters.

Historically shanties were not usually sung ashore, but nowadays they are popular in many countries, particularly, but not exclusively, those with a seafaring tradition. In mainland Europe many countries favour large Shanty , whereas many English speaking countries favour smaller groups. Although the days of the “Tall Ships” are gone, the Shanty song style is still popular and used for new musical compositions. Thus the Shanty tradition lives on and can be found in clubs and festivals throughout the world.

2 Artists

Alan Whitbread Back for another year we are more than pleased to welcome Alan to the festival. Always entertaining and knowledgeable and with a wide repertoire of nautical songs, Alan sings a range of shanties and , sometimes accompanied by concertina.

Cappella If ever two voices were meant to go together it must be those of Tony and Lesley Petty, whose amazing two part a cappella harmony singing has been enchanting audiences at clubs and festivals since 1996. Their songs are a mixture of traditional and contemporary, delivered in a relaxed and witty style with audience participation always encouraged.

Charlotte & Spong A delight to listen to, Charlotte and Spong will also be returning to the festival in 2016.And in addition to their usual repertoire they will be teaming up with Alan and Rene for another magical Maritime Magic Lantern Show – original Victorian glass plates, accompanied by musical entertainment. Don’t miss it!

3 Artists

Chris Roche A loyal supporter of the festival, Chris has also been known to sing the odd shanty or two! He is also a genuine and for 2016 has agreed to give an illustrated talk on real experiences of Rounding .

Les Corsaires de la Vesdre Our first group from Belgium, Corsaires de la Vesdre are named after the River where they live, close to the borders with and Holland. Derek has many years’ experience of singing folk and sea songs, has toured extensively and written several songs, some of which are so well absorbed into the folk tradition that others attribute them to that well known writer Anon. 4 Artists

They are very proud to have been invited back following their debut in 2015. The weekend forms part of a busy calendar for 2016, which will see the lads venturing north over the border to Norfolk, as well as a raft of dates within Suffolk.

Www.tower-hotel-harwich.co.uk Artists Grietje Sprot Coming from Hindeloopen, an ancient harbour town in Friesland, Netherlands, members of this colourful group all love fish and love singing and so became Grietje Sprot, the Fishwives ! They have been performing together since 1993, always in their distinctive traditional costume, which is typical of that worn by Dutch fishwives of the 1920s. Their repertoire includes ballads and songs in Friesian and Dutch all about fish, the sea, sailors, love and tragedy!

Harwich Shanty Crew Famously formed from the 2010 Shanty Festival, Harwich Shanty Crew are now a busy and successful local singing group, performing at many local events. The festival would not be the same without them.

Hog Eye Men More keen supporters of the festival, Hog Eye Men will be running singarounds and sessions this year, in addition to singing around the town. Great traditional singing, this London based Crew always do us proud with professional performances and good humour.

9 Artists Inner State Theatre This year Punch and Judy will be Inner State, together with songs and silliness in the Sunshine Variety Show and the great deckchair challenge. Check them out at the Redoubt and Ha’Penny Pier.

Jim Radford One of the diminishing numbers of survivors from WW2, Jim worked on the Naval Wartime Rescue Tug Service, based in Harwich. An accomplished singer and performer, Jim will be hosting a “Meet the Artist” session, talking, singing and answering questions on this local subject, dear to the hearts of many. Kernow Buoys Back to entertain us again, Gideon and Nigel will be making the long trek from the West Country to sing songs of the sea, both Cornish and otherwise. Kernow Buoys are one of our most popular acts. Watch them at one of their many appearances and you’ll find out why. Mains’l Haul Also returning to entertain us again are Maldon based group Mains’l Haul. Singing shanties and playing a variety of instruments they will be appearing at various venues throughout the town. Malcolm Ward & Pete Stockwell Malc and Pete have been with us from the very beginning and continue to be enthusiastic supporters of the Festival. We are very pleased to welcome them back for another weekend. See them around the town or in singarounds and sessions.

10 Artists Motley Crew Like many a Shanty Crew, this one grew out of late night revelry at a yacht club and has gone from strength to strength. Motley Crew are local to the Festival, from Brightlingsea, just along the coast. Now regulars at local fetes, regattas, concerts and yacht club events, many of their appearances are to raise money for the RNLI.

The Naze Shanty Crew Founder members of the Harwich International Shanty Festival, the Naze Shanty Crew originate from Walton-on-the Naze, so close along the coast they can be seen and reputedly heard (!) across the bay. Keen drinkers, singers and sailors, not necessarily in that order, they attend a number of maritime festivals each year, but Harwich, of course, remains their favourite

North Cape Poland has a long and proud association with the sea and boasts a large and enthusiastic following for Shanties and sea songs. This year we are delighted that North Cape will be joining us with their a cappella band singing shanties in up to 8 different languages. The group has been performing together for over twenty years and won numerous awards both at home and abroad. They have appeared at numerous festivals throughout the world and in 2016 we welcome them to Harwich!

11 Artists

Roaring Trowmen Roaring Trowmen were a huge success at last year’s Harwich Shanty Festival and have been making waves at other festivals and events throughout the U.K. so we had to have them back. They mix musical excellence with on stage humour and personality and are an act not to be missed.

Salt Water & Beer Joining us for the Saturday of the Festival, Salt Water & Beer were formed a few years ago from an impromptu sing at the quayside in Maldon, inspired by the magnificent Thames Barges there. Since that time they have sung at several local events and aspire to continue the tradition of singing sea songs and shanties whilst, most importantly, having fun.

Shep Woolley Shep Woolley has been entertaining the crowds since performing at the local working men’s club as a young boy. Through Country & Western, Jazz, and Rock’n’Roll he progressed to stand up comedy and a spell in the lent a nautical slant to his material. A professional musician of many years standing, Shep now combines an entertaining mix of comedy, monologues, sea songs and shanties for his maritime bookings. Don’t miss him!

12 Artists Sound Tradition Another fine group from East Anglia, Sound Tradition is an a cappella foursome singing in glorious harmony. With material that is both carefully chosen and arranged they have become very active on the festival circuit within the U.K. They join us in Harwich with their Maritime set.

Stork Ejlaender From Fano, off the coast of Denmark, Stork Ejlaender are proud of their island heritage and have been singing together for nearly twenty years now. With a shared interest in singing, sailing and the sea, their shanties reflect a passion for the traditional island way of life. Popular previous guests at Harwich we have invited them back in 2016.

Swinging the Lead ‘Swinging the Lead’ have been described as Kent’s busiest Shanty Crew and are delighted to be returning to Harwich again this year. They are resident shanty singers on the famous Cutty Sark at Greenwich, the Thames Sailing Barge ‘Edith May’ and regular performers at Deal and Falmouth Maritime Festivals. The group have been together for a number of years and produced a couple of well received CDs. They perform traditional shanties and a vast selection of songs of the sea, some of which are self-written. Dave, Stephen, Pete, Joe, and Colin all have a passion for Maritime Music, Historic Ships and sailing. Some of the band members have Tall Ship sailing experience and some are regulars on the Woolwich Ferry!

13 Artists Tidens Brus Our first group from Finland, Tidens Brus in fact hail from the Aland Islands, between Finland and Sweden. Roughly translated “Aland” means “Land of Water” so it is hardly surprising that there is a tradition of singing songs of the sea. The four members of the group sing in harmony, sometimes accompanied by guitar, whistle and percussion.

Trim Rig & A Doxy Trim Rig and a Doxy have been performing together at Folk and Shanty Festivals for 15 years or more and this will be their 3rd appearance at Harwich Shanty Festival.

Julia’s distinctive melodeon style and Derek’s harmonious singing voice blend together to form a unique delivery with a warm and sometimes humorous slant. A popular duo, make sure you catch them over the Festival weekend.

Vagrants Crew When Vagrants Crew first attended the Festival they were an instant hit so we knew we would have to have them back. Their music is lively and their enthusiasm and enjoyment catching, making everyone want to join in. In addition to our own festival, they will also be attending the Baltic Shanty Festival which co-incidentally this year is held in the home town of our Finnish group, Tidens Brus.

Skills are similar to those for playing the spoons and in this workshop Pete teaches how to hold the Bones and the first movements with music.
